Chapter 9 - A sad ending to a dungeon guide (Fantasy, Flashfiction)

My thoughts wandered around confused of the situation that I was in. I'm in a chair tied up. It was the first thing that I felt. The moss illuminating a green glow between the cracked walls was all I could use to tell where I was. Gray walls all of the same length surrounded me. Water leaked through the walls and droplets of water fell onto my head. It's nauseating, this smell that is. The smell of the rust under my feet as water drips down from the ceiling.

"Where am I? What is this place?"

As soon as I said those words, bright yellow lights crept through the crevices in front of me.The crevices broke open as a bright light shined upon my face. I was still in the same position as before but now the room was now lit. Through the wall people have appeared. Josh, Denis, Amelia and Valia. That's right, we're here to explore the ruins, I remember now.

With a bow in Amelia's hand she runs towards me giving an expression of worry. "Daxton! Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, what happened? We were just walking through the ruins and then..." Beyond that my memory was still foggy.

It started, as the pieces of the roof came off the ground under me continuously vibrates. This place is bound to collapse.

"Amelia are you done? We have to go now!" I could hear it in Denis' breath as he spoke. He was tired. Sounds of metal clashed, outside the walls they were fighting something.

Untying the ropes on me as I stood up my legs gave up on me. The rust I was smelling was not from under me. My legs were bleeding, the skin of my leg was shredded by the claws of monsters. With Amelia as support I ran out. The light that blocked my view was now gone and now I could see it. Valia with her shield blocked the incoming arrows of moving skeletons as Denis sliced through the flesh of the undead. Pushing through these undead beings, the attacks were now coming from the back. Slowly they dwindled down as the dungeon's roof fell onto them. As ran moved as fast as we could traps triggered as a hole of spikes opened and fire arrows shot at us. Valia who was blocking them for us gets hit by an arrow.

"No, Valia," I shouted.

With a pain in her voice she says, "I'll be fine, Let's keep going."

As we ran with no end to this dungeon we were getting tired. Denis gasping for air in his heavy armor and Valia slowly weakening from the arrow and I.. I was slowing them down, especially Amelia. I had to ask them.

"Guys, how far away are we from the entrance!" I asked.

"We're not too far now," Denis says, breathing heavily.

From my viewpoint this long hallway seemed neverending and the stairs that we entered through were long. We were never going to get out of here unless.

"Amelia, Let me go."

"What! Are you crazy?" On her face I could see how exasperated she was from what I said.

"You have to. I can't…Denis." My voice dwindled from the blood loss.

"I hear you Daxton, but I can't, we can't." Even with his tiredness he spoke clearly this one time.

"We've only known each other for a few days and they've already grown attached to me. Plus, I'm just a dungeon guide for pay." A light chuckle comes out.

These people were still young explorers. They have the potential of becoming one of the greatest. They'll be able to do it. They'll be able to reach the bottom of these dungeons one day. Unlike me who had given up. Removing Amelia's arm around me I push her forward ahead of me. She instinctively if she had stopped she'd die. Amelia looked at me and I looked back

"Daxton, the hell are you doing?" She shouted.

The two in front noticed. Denis grabs Amelia who had slowed, carrying her on his shoulder. My knees collapse onto the floor.

"So this is how I die."

The flashbacks were already setting in. The times of when I was a dungeon explorer exploring the mysteries of dungeons with my friends. A paladin, an archer, a sword and I.

"Thinking back on it, my role was mostly as a dungeon guide also, how funny."

A piece of rock hits my head. Blood dripped onto my eye as I lay on the ground. The roof collapsing worked my body as my limbs crushed one by one. There was no pain now.

We were all happy back then back when we were still alive.
