"If I don't work, I don't have anything else to do," Kim Mi-jung responded with a playful wink and a smile.
Changing the subject, she suddenly stopped and turned to look at Link: "Oh, by the way, Lord, could you grant me some personnel appointment authority? There are some vacant positions that urgently need to be filled, otherwise, even trivial matters will have to be reported to me layer by layer, which is too cumbersome. I want to establish a hierarchical government system similar to the 21st century, where affairs are handled in stages and reported step by step. This way, our management will be more efficient and convenient."
"No problem, go ahead and do it. As for who you want to appoint, just give me a detailed list when the time comes," Link readily agreed.
"OK, thank you, Lord!"
Kim Mi-jung's eyes sparkled with excitement. After thanking him, she quickly walked away with light steps.
Link turned slightly, his gaze falling behind him, and said, "Agnes, let's go, let's take a stroll outside the city."
"Alright."
Before he finished speaking, Agnes gracefully leaped from the balcony and landed steadily behind Link.
Link and Agnes first went to the slum together, intending to check on the construction progress of the wooden houses.
The dilapidated thatched huts where the orphans used to live had now been completely demolished, replaced by a two-story wooden house.
The wooden house was spacious and bright, with sunlight streaming through the new window frames, casting warm patches of light on the floor. Outside, a wide bluestone road wound its way, the surface smooth and even, no longer showing the dilapidated, shabby, and scarred scene of the past.
Next to this hopeful wooden house, the residences of Raymond and the other disabled veterans had also been completed.
This arrangement allowed the veterans to look after these orphans at all times, shielding them from wind and rain, and providing them with the care and protection they lacked.
Link had intended to go see the orphans first, but just as he reached the entrance of the wooden house, a fierce quarrel erupted from not far away. The noisy shouts instantly broke the tranquility of the place.
One of the voices was all too familiar to Link; it was Raymond's slightly hoarse but powerful voice.
What was going on?
Link couldn't help but feel a hint of doubt. Raymond was an honest and upright man, usually silently contributing, and unlikely to easily get into arguments with others. For him to be so angry, the matter was probably unusual.
With curiosity, Link quickened his pace, walking towards the direction of the quarrel.
As he got closer, Link clearly caught their conversation.
"Raymond! Why haven't we gotten our turn to build new houses yet? Don't think that just because the Lord gave you this job, you can ride roughshod over us and act superior!" A sharp voice yelled, full of dissatisfaction and provocation.
"How many times have I explained it to you all! First, build houses for those villagers with disabilities so they can have a stable place to live; next are the poor families with only women and children, their lives are difficult, and they need help more. You guys, every single one of you is a healthy, able-bodied man. You don't know how to go out and earn money yourselves, and when it's time to work, you always make excuses and slack off. And you still expect the Lord to build houses for you for free? All of you get in line at the very end!"
Raymond's voice carried suppressed anger, yet it was firm and undeniable.
After listening to a few sentences, Link roughly understood the whole story.
In this world, there are always some people who are unwilling to work, yet dream of getting something for nothing, and always want to take advantage of others.
Now these people, unwilling to work, yet eagerly hoping others would build new houses for them, even making a fuss and demanding to be prioritized, to gain benefits before others.
Isn't this just a bunch of deadbeats?
Link couldn't help but sigh with emotion. Before transmigration, such people were common in reality, and he didn't expect to encounter them even after transmigrating to this world.
It seems that no matter the era, such people are not a minority.
This is human nature.
Just as Link was deep in thought, the quarrel intensified, and the atmosphere became tense.
"Why should we be at the very end! Raymond, I'm telling you, tomorrow you must arrange for someone to build new houses for us, otherwise don't blame us for being impolite. Be careful, we might break your other good leg too, and turn you into a complete cripple!" The leading hooligan, with a fierce expression, threatened menacingly.
"Go to hell! You sons of bitches, you're absolutely insane! If you have the guts, break my leg right now, Raymond. I want to see how much power you lazy, shameless bastards really have!" Raymond's eyes widened in fury, and he retorted fearlessly.
"You damned cripple, if I don't teach you a lesson, I see you haven't learned your lesson!"
The leading hooligan, enraged, cursed and raised his hand, viciously slapping Raymond across the face.
"Lord Link, aren't you going to stop them?"
Seeing Raymond stumble and fall to the ground after being hit by the hooligans, Agnes leaned close to Link and asked in a low voice.
