Chapter 31 - Chapter 30

A week had passed since Hiro and Nozomi transferred to Midtown High, and they had firmly established their standing as the school's cool kids. They effortlessly commanded every hallway they stepped into, turning heads with their sharp, independent style. Hiro casually rotated through high-end streetwear, crisp designer tees, and custom leather jackets that made him look like he belonged on a Tokyo runway rather than a public transit bus. Nozomi matched his presence completely, wearing vibrant designer dresses, pleated skirts, and silk blouses that radiated an air of untouchable luxury. They were stylish, completely independent, and entirely unbothered by the standard high school social hierarchy.

By day three, Flash Thompson had a massive realization. The new foreign transfers were rapidly gaining far more popularity than him, completely stealing his spotlight without even putting in an ounce of effort. Driven by pure jealousy and a fragile ego, Flash decided to step up and try to bully them during the lunch period, planning to knock them down a peg in front of the entire crowded cafeteria to reclaim his status.

It failed. Spectacularly.

Flash had aggressively marched up to their table, surrounded by a few of his football buddies, and slammed his hands down onto the plastic surface to deliver a classic, intimidating threat. Hiro hadn't even looked up from his food, merely adjusting the position of his soda can with a relaxed, lazy flick of his fingers that showed he didn't view Flash as a threat at all. Nozomi, on the other hand, had paused, flashing Flash a blinding, sweet smile before unleashing a beautifully calm, utterly devastating verbal takedown.

Without raising her voice, she pointed out the exact quality flaws and loose stitching in his supposedly high-end jacket, casually questioned his aggressive hair styling choices, and mathematically broke down his complete lack of social boundaries and basic etiquette in under thirty seconds. Her tone was so casual, yet so piercingly accurate, that the entire cafeteria fell dead silent for a beat before exploding into roaring laughter. Even Flash's own friends couldn't help but smirk. Left bright red, completely humiliated, and unable to form a coherent comeback, Flash snatched his hands off the table and ran for the nearest exit.

Throughout the rest of the week, their bond with Peter, Ned, and MJ had slightly deepened. While the twins kept their cosmic secrets and extraordinary abilities tightly locked behind their glamorous human disguises, the shared smiles, subtle inside jokes, and easy banter in the back rows of their classes made them feel like a genuine group. Peter appreciated the quiet stability they brought, Ned was still secretly trying to figure out if they were aliens, and MJ simply observed them with her usual sharp, quiet curiosity.

But it was currently the weekend, and high school drama was the last thing on the twins' minds.

They were currently standing deep within S.H.I.E.L.D.'s massive, floating helicarrier, high above the clouds. The high-tech command center hummed with complex data streams, glowing holographic maps, and the deep, distant vibration of the massive spinning turbine engines. Despite the bustling activity of agents running diagnostics around the bridge, the real tension was concentrated entirely right in front of them. Director Nick Fury stood with a thoroughly annoyed expression, his one good eye boring holes into the twins' completely relaxed faces.

Slowly, Fury reached into his black trench coat and held up three intricately crafted silver foxes, each boasting five distinct, flowing tails. They glinted sharply under the sterile fluorescent lights of the bridge.

"Can you explain," Fury growled, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a week's worth of pent-up frustration, "why exactly I found these sitting directly inside the most heavily protected vault in S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters? A vault that requires dual biometric authorization, retinal scans, and a fluctuating encryption key that changes every sixty seconds?"

Nozomi and Hiro just played completely dumb, trading a quick, innocent glance.

"Maybe it's cause your security lacks," Hiro answered casually, his hands tucked loosely into his jacket pockets as his shoulders shrugged.

"Yeah, are we seriously being blamed for a structural skill issue?" Nozomi added, tilting her head with a look of pure, childlike wonder. "Nicky, that is a really bad habit. It gets most competitive gamers burned pretty quickly. You should really look into upgrading your firewall configurations."

Fury looked like he was about to physically bust a vein right there on the bridge. His jaw clenched so tight that the leather strap of his eyepatch strained against his temple. Next to him, Agent Maria Hill was turning her face completely toward her digital clipboard, her shoulders trembling violently as she tried—and failed—not to laugh out loud at the director's expense. The image of the most feared spy in the world being taunted by two teenagers was simply too much to bear.

Taking three long, deep breaths to force his blood pressure down, Fury slowly lowered his hand, putting the metal foxes away into his coat pocket. He turned back to the twins, his voice forced into a calm, deadly quiet that usually made seasoned agents tremble.

"What do you two want?" Fury asked bluntly, crossing his arms.

Nozomi and Hiro looked at him, their identical smirks fading just a bit into an expression of less amusement, replaced with a playful charm.

"We brought you a gift," Hiro said, reaching into his pocket and handing over a small, neatly wrapped black box with a silver bow.

Fury looked at the container skeptically, not moving a single muscle to take it at first. He eyed it as if it were a live explosive device. "If this is one of your pranks, I swear I will personally authorize a mid-air extraction and kick you out of the bay doors right here and now. Don't test me, kids."

"Just open it, Nicky," Nozomi urged, rolling her eyes playfully. "We went through a lot of trouble to source the materials for this. It's a genuine gesture of appreciation."

Fury grunted, snatching the box out of Hiro's hand and tearing off the lid. He reached inside his giant hand and pulled out the contents, his face instantly freezing into a completely blank stare.

It was a custom, high-quality plush of a very angry emoji, completely fitted with a tiny, matching leather eyepatch stitched over its left side. Stitched into the top fabric in bold, golden, neat letters were the words: The World's Best Spy. Right across the bottom, neatly embroidered, it simply read: Fury.

The bridge went dead silent for a fraction of a second as the agents nearby actively tried to look anywhere else. Then, the twins and Maria Hill completely lost it. Hill doubled over, burying her face completely in her paperwork as she laughed uncontrollably, her professional composure shattering into dust. Hiro and Nozomi practically fell against the high-tech steel console, their loud, echoing laughter bouncing off the metal walls of the command center. Hiro was clutching his stomach, while Nozomi was leaning against his shoulder, her shoulders shaking with giggles.

Fury looked at the angry emoji plushy with a completely unreadable, stony expression, his eye tracking the laughing trio. Without breaking eye contact with the twins, he slowly reached up with his free hand, tapping his communication earpiece.

"Stop the carrier," Fury ordered flatly into the comms line, his voice deadpan. "We're aborting some passengers mid-flight. Open the lower hangar doors."

Hiro and Nozomi, who were still fiercely laughing, tried to frantically negotiate their way out of a mid-air drop, waving their hands around, but they were simply too busy gasping for air to actually make out any coherent words. Hiro managed a weak wheeze, while Nozomi just leaned against his shoulder, her shoulders shaking with giggles.

Just then, the laughter died instantly.

The playful atmosphere on the bridge vanished in a single millisecond as loud, piercing red alarms flashed violently over the entire ship. The warm lighting of the command center was instantly replaced by a blaring, rhythmic siren that bathed the entire metal room in a harsh, bleeding crimson glow.

The twins stopped laughing entirely, their expressions snapping from pure amusement to sharp, cold focus in an instant. Their ears, though hidden beneath the glamour field, practically twitched as their internal senses locked onto the sudden shift in gravity. The ambient energy in the room grew heavy.

The automated tracking screens behind Fury began spinning frantically, lines of complex algorithms and satellite code rewriting themselves at maximum speed as global data flooded the mainframe. Red warning boxes popped up across every single monitor on the bridge, flashing with high-priority danger markers.

The emergency speaker barked across the bridge, a frantic operator's voice cutting through the blaring sirens.

"Alert! High-priority emergency! A massive, unprecedented energy surge has just been detected by our orbital sensors! The atmospheric thermal readings are off the charts, and the spatial tracking grid is experiencing a complete baseline failure! Coordinates confirmed—the spike is localized directly within London!"

The agents on the bridge immediately scrambled, their fingers flying across keyboards as they tried to stabilize the incoming data streams. The sheer velocity of the energy spike was unlike anything S.H.I.E.L.D. had ever mapped before.

Fury's stony, annoyed expression instantly shattered into a look of absolute grim realization. The plushy was dropped onto the console, completely forgotten, as his hand slammed down hard onto the main communications override panel. He stared at the massive global map flashing red over the United Kingdom, his eye widening slightly.

"Motherfucker," Fury growled.

Now, for all those Marvel nerds who were reading and then went. "Wait, by Endgame, SHIELD was no more. Where is this coming from?" Anyone? 🙋‍♂️

No one?

I just busted myself?

Well, to all those wondering this now. I say. It was a mistake on my part. As I was writing the earlier chapters, I hadn't discovered this piece of information, and I can't just go back and change it.

Random person: Whispers in my ear.

Oh, wait, I can?

Well, I am too lazy to. So here is a solution that will help both of us.

I am the author, and I say SHIELD is still here, so SHILED is still here.

There. Problem solved.

Peace, see you next chapter.
