Chapter 34 - Attention?

Alfred entered the study with tea.

"Still investigating the new masked individual, Master Bruce?"

"He's an unknown factor. Unknown factors are dangerous."

"He's also been helping. The city. Saving lives. Stopping criminals you can't reach because you're stretched too thin."

Bruce took the tea. "That doesn't mean I should trust him blindly."

"Of course not. But perhaps consider that Gotham needs more than one guardian. You've said so yourself."

Bruce was silent for a moment. Alfred was right, as usual. Gotham was too big, too corrupt, too dangerous for one person to handle alone. Even Batman had limits.

Dick Grayson was training, would become Robin eventually. But that was years away still. The boy was only twelve.

Sovereign was here now. Operating effectively. Following the rules Batman had laid out.

"I'll keep monitoring," Bruce said finally. "But I won't interfere unless he crosses a line."

"Very reasonable, sir."

Alfred left. Bruce returned to the footage.

On screen, Sovereign moved through Gotham's rooftops with enhanced grace. Stopped a mugging. Saved a woman from assault. Disappeared before GCPD arrived.

Effective. Disciplined. Careful.

Bruce made a note in his file. Sovereign: potential ally. Continue observation. Maintain communication channel. Be prepared for either cooperation or confrontation.

The new vigilante was a variable. But variables could be managed.

For now, Sovereign had proven himself worthy of cautious trust.

That would do.

---

Far away from Gotham, in a hidden fortress in the Himalayas, Ra's al Ghul received a report from one of his agents.

"Master, there's been unusual activity in Gotham. A new enhanced individual operating as a vigilante. Calls himself Sovereign."

Ra's looked up from the ancient text he'd been studying. "Enhanced how?"

"Unknown. Appears to have superhuman strength and speed. Advanced technology. Skilled in multiple martial arts. He's been operating for approximately six weeks."

"And the Detective? Batman's response?"

"They've made contact. Appear to have reached an understanding. No open conflict."

Ra's stroked his beard thoughtfully. Gotham was Batman's city. Ra's had been watching the Detective for years now, considering him as a potential heir. Batman's skill, intelligence, and dedication were remarkable.

But this new player was interesting. Enhanced through unknown means. Operating independently but not in conflict with Batman.

"Continue monitoring," Ra's ordered. "I want detailed reports on this Sovereign's capabilities, patterns, and weaknesses. If he proves worthy, he may be useful. If he proves a threat to my plans, he'll need to be eliminated."

"Yes, Master."

The agent departed. Ra's returned to his text, but his mind was elsewhere.

The world was changing. Metahumans were becoming more common. The Justice League had formed. New players were emerging.

His plans would need to adapt. But that was acceptable. He'd been alive for over six hundred years. He knew how to adapt.

This Sovereign was just another piece on the board. Another variable to account for.

Time would reveal whether he was an asset or an obstacle.

And Ra's al Ghul was very good at removing obstacles.
