Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Rogue Demons on the Exorcist Hit List

Nightfall.

Wind howled under a moonless sky.

Inside an abandoned apartment building, the warped wooden door creaked open with a sound that made one's teeth ache. A musty stench of mildew and rot clung to the air like a curse.

A figure strode in without hesitation.

He wore a sleek silver coat on top, black slacks below, and a pair of sneakers on his feet.

From a distance, it looked relatively normal. Up close, his outfit gave off an odd sense of mismatch.

Not that anyone in this forsaken place cared how Rod dressed.

What did care, however, were the beings lurking in the dark, far more interested in the intoxicating scent of his flesh and blood than his fashion sense.

And like any seasoned predator, they were patient.

The moment Rod reached the staircase in the dilapidated lobby, the rusted front doors creaked shut behind him.

He turned.

And in that instant, several strange noises stirred from the shadows.

Pairs of glowing eyes, lantern-bright, lit up the darkness one by one, encircling him from all sides.

Figures began to emerge from the gloom, drawing closer.

"Well, well. An exorcist bold enough to show up alone?"

"Thought there'd be backup hiding nearby. Turns out it's just you, huh?"

"He's a pretty one, though. Shame. Hey girls, let me have a go before you eat him, alright?"

"Fine by me, sis. Just pass him over when you're done playing."

The last speaker was a chubby man with slicked-back hair, pale skin, a dress shirt, and little white socks. His cheeks jiggled beneath a scruffy beard as he grinned lecherously.

"Fuck that."

Rod had almost considered pretending to surrender to the busty demon woman's offer, but the moment that slob grinned at him, every instinct in his body screamed. He didn't hesitate.

In a flash, he drew a Desert Eagle and leveled it at the man's forehead.

Bang!

Flame burst from the barrel, followed by a thunderous crack.

The bullet spiraled into the target's skull. His head snapped back, and a bloody crater bloomed between his eyes as he stumbled, gurgling.

Rod exhaled slowly. He had no interest in being cast in a demonic horror remake of an opera.

But the gunshot?

Might as well have kicked a hornet's nest.

"You bastard! A sneak attack?!"

"I'll gouge out your eyes and pickle them in brine!"

The other three lunged without pause. Their rage warped their voices into inhuman screeches as their eyes glowed with an eerie red light. Their bodies and faces twisted, mouths splitting open to reveal rows of dagger-like teeth.

Even the "capital-heavy" demon woman now looked like something ripped from Dead Space, sprinting toward Rod with murderous glee.

He was ready.

With quick reflexes, Rod dodged the three-pronged assault and vaulted up to the second-floor landing.

"Run, little bug! See where it gets you!"

They didn't panic, just laughed.

The whole building was sealed. The only way out was past them.

Rod looked down at them calmly.

"Who said anything about running?"

Without changing expression, he reached into his coat, pulled out a rocket launcher, and fired at the cluster of demons below.

Whooom!

The missile trailed a jet of fire, rocketing toward the monsters. In that brief second, Rod could see the disbelief in their faces.

Ref? He's cheating!

BOOM!

A pillar of orange fire erupted, rocking the building with a shockwave. Rod shielded himself with his coat as debris and smoke filled the air.

When the dust settled, the scent of gunpowder lingered.

Rod stepped across scorched wreckage toward the one demon still clinging to life. He raised his pistol, now loaded with bullets blessed by holy light, and blew her head off.

A mechanical voice echoed in his mind.

[Mission "Purge the Rogue Demon Squad" , Complete]

[Reward: Church Reputation +10, Nichirin Blade x1]

[Item Acquired: Nichirin Blade – Deals bonus damage to all creatures that fear sunlight.]

"Huh. A Nichirin Blade? I'll take it."

Not exactly top-tier gear, but better than nothing.

Without sparing another glance at the charred corpses, Rod turned and walked away.

Truth was, he wasn't from this world.

His body had been de-aged to sixteen years old before he was reborn in this cross-anime universe.

And how did he know it was a crossover world?

Because the system told him so.

After two years of clawing his way through this chaotic world, he'd confirmed it himself. This world was a nightmarish blend of zombies, vampires, ghouls, Muzan-level threats, gods, buddhas, angels, and demon lords, all real.

In other words, for your average isekai traveler, survival wasn't just hard, it was almost impossible.

Even low-tier black market jobs wouldn't hire him.

Fortunately, Rod hadn't come alone.

He had a system.

Game-like in function, it provided mission prompts, teleport anchors, quest rewards, a gacha feature, and other locked features still grayed out.

Through this system, Rod earned rewards, slowly carving out a place for himself.

Today, he was a free-agent mercenary.

And those things he killed? Rogue demons.

Creatures that had broken their contracts with higher demons and gone feral. Unstable. Uncontrollable. Over time, they lost their humanity, and even their human form.

This concept was pulled straight from the Underworld of High School DxD.

The mission Rod had just completed?

An official extermination job from the Church.

"Time to clock out."

He yawned.

Rod had driven here non-stop after accepting the mission. Now that it was done, it was time to collect payment.

He summoned his system map and tapped on a lit-up teleport anchor: "First Heaven Sector."
