Chapter 42 - Dinner as a family

Sanemi decides to let Giyuu sleep, knowing he needs the rest. He continues grading papers quietly, occasionally glancing at Giyuu with fondness. He makes a mental note to prepare a stronger coffee for Giyuu after his nap, knowing how he needs it to get through the afternoon. The bell rings, signaling the end of lunch break. Giyuu jolts awake, disoriented.

"What time is it...?"

He rubs his eyes and looks around, still half-asleep.

"Time to wake up, sleepyhead. Your students are probably waiting."

Sanemi stands up, stretching his back.

"Yeah, I'll be making dinner. You did forgot it, haven't you? Now go before your students think you've abandoned them."

He smirks, knowing Giyuu has a reputation for being late to his own classes. Giyuu nods and heads to the door, looking back one last time.

"Thanks for letting me nap. Love you."

He says softly before leaving. Sanemi watches him leave, a warm feeling in his chest.

"Love you too, you sap."

He mutters under his breath, shaking his head with a smile as he returns to his work. As the school day ends, Sanemi packs up his things and heads to the grocery store, already thinking about what he needs for dinner. Giyuu loves simmered salmon with daikon. Sanemi adds the ingredients to his shopping list, remembering how Giyuu's eyes light up whenever he cooks it.

"He's going to be so happy."

He grabs some ohagi as well, knowing they're Giyuu's favorite dessert. Back at home, Sanemi starts preparing the meal with practiced efficiency, humming a tune as he works. The kitchen fills with the delicious aroma of cooking salmon and miso soup. The front door opens, and Nezuko and Tanjiro run in excitedly.

"Giyuu-san, we're home!"

"It smells amazing in here!"

They both head straight to the kitchen, eager to see what Sanemi is cooking.

"Hey, you two. Perfect timing, dinner's almost ready."

He turns to see Giyuu walking in behind them, looking refreshed from his nap.

"I smell salmon."

He smiles warmly at Sanemi, grateful for the surprise. Tanjiro and Nezuko set the table while Sanemi plates the food.

"Giyuu-san, did you have a good nap at Sanemi's class?"

She asks innocently, making Giyuu blush slightly.

"Yes, it was... peaceful."

He tries to maintain his composure, but the children notice his reddened cheeks.

"You're blushing, Giyuu-san!"

He teases, causing Sanemi to chuckle.

"I am not!"

He protests weakly, but the children continue giggling.

"Leave him alone, you little devils. Let's eat before it gets cold."

He serves the food, giving Giyuu an extra helping of salmon. The family sits down and starts eating, the children chatting animatedly about their day.

"Sanemi-san, can you make more ohagi after dinner?"

She asks hopefully, eyeing the sweets on the counter.

"Sure, but only if you help clean up first."

He winks at her, knowing she loves baking with him.

"I'll help too! I want to learn how to make them."

He adds eagerly, while Giyuu watches them with fondness.

"Where are Muichiro and Genya, by the way?"

"They went out to buy some art supplies for Muichiro."

He takes another bite of his salmon, enjoying the tender fish.

"Muichiro-san said he wanted to paint with us later!"

The doorbell rings suddenly, interrupting their meal. Sanemi gets up to answer the door, finding Muichiro and Genya carrying several bags of art supplies.

"We're back! And we brought snacks!"

Muichiro waves lazily, looking slightly tired from their shopping trip.

"You two better have gotten the good snacks."

He helps them bring everything inside, while Muichiro immediately heads to the kitchen to grab a drink.

"I got those limited edition candy bars you like, Giyuu."

He says quietly, placing them on the counter.

"Thanks, Muichiro. You're the best."

Muichiro nods and sits down, while Genya starts organizing the art supplies on the table.

"I also got some new brushes for Tanjiro."

He hands them to Tanjiro, who looks excited to try them out.

"Thank you, Genya! I'll paint something nice for everyone."

He carefully examines the brushes, while Nezuko leans over to see what Muichiro got. "Can we start painting after dinner? Please?"

"Of course, after you finish your food and help with the dishes."

The kids finish eating quickly, eager to start their painting session.

"I'll help with the dishes too, since someone is eager to get to the sweets."

He teases Muichiro, who's already eyeing the ohagi.

"I'm not eager... I'm just hungry."

He mumbles, though everyone knows he's lying. Genya laughs and ruffles his hair.

"You're always hungry for sweets, Muichiro."

They all move to the kitchen, preparing for a fun evening of painting and baking. Giyuu stands beside Sanemi at the sink, wrapping his arms around his waist while they wash dishes.

"You're being clingy again."

He says with a smirk, but he leans back into Giyuu's embrace, enjoying the closeness.

"Can't help it. You make me feel warm."

He whispers, resting his chin on Sanemi's shoulder as they continue working.

"Tch, sap."

Despite his words, he turns his head to kiss Giyuu's cheek softly.

"You love it."

He smiles against Sanemi's skin, tightening his hold. The children are too focused on their art to notice the intimate moment between their 'parents'.

"Maybe I do."

He admits quietly, finishing up the last dish and turning to face Giyuu fully. He pulls him closer, ignoring the fact that their hands are still wet from the water. Giyuu's eyes sparkle with affection as he looks up at Sanemi, their faces inches apart.

"You're lucky I'm not in the mood to yell at you right now."

He teases, though his eyes are soft and full of love.

"I'm lucky for many reasons."

He glances at the kids, who are now arguing over colors.

"But mostly because I get to have you and our family."

He says sincerely, resting his forehead against Sanemi's.

"Cheesy bastard."

He pulls Giyuu into a proper kiss, ignoring the gagging sounds from Genya in the background. The kiss deepens for a moment before they hear Muichiro's voice.

"Can you two stop being gross and help us paint?"

The kids are now gathered around the table with their supplies, waiting impatiently.

"Fine, fine. We're coming."

*He breaks the kiss reluctantly, giving Giyuu a playful glare before joining the kids. Giyuu follows, sitting down next to Tanjiro who hands him a brush.

"Giyuu-san, you should paint something for Sanemi-san too!"

He suggests innocently, while Muichiro smirks knowingly.

"Yeah, Giyuu. Show us what you've got."

He challenges, clearly amused by the idea of his stoic boyfriend trying to paint.

"I'll try my best."

He says seriously, picking up a brush and staring intently at the canvas. He starts making careful strokes, his expression focused and determined to impress Sanemi. The kids watch as Giyuu creates a surprisingly good painting of a sunset. Sanemi watches with a mix of surprise and pride.

"Not bad, Tomioka. You've been holding out on us."

He leans over to inspect the painting, genuinely impressed by Giyuu's artistic talent.

"I learned from watching Tanjiro."

He gives the young artist a proud smile, while Tanjiro beams at the compliment.

"Giyuu-san is a fast learner! He's better than Sanemi-san."

Sanemi gasps dramatically, pretending to be offended.

"Oi, I'm better at other things!"

The kids giggle at Sanemi's reaction, while Giyuu tries to hide his smile.

"You're better at math, I'll give you that."

He says diplomatically, patting Tanjiro's head to avoid further teasing.
