When I went quiet, Evelin lifted her hands to frame my face, her stare intense and unwavering. "Listen to me, Jimmy. Whatever garbage your father fed you, don't let it get inside your head. Just believe what I'm telling you, okay?"
I mumbled through my confusion, "What you're telling me...?"
"Yes!" Evelin's voice rang with certainty. "Hear this, Jimmy—I love you!"
Right there in the café, Evelin held my face between her palms, delivering the most direct confession I'd ever heard.
I stared back at her, captivated, my eyes flooding with overwhelming emotion.
