"Then go get your pillow with me first."
Otis wondered just how cowardly this girl was she didn't even dare step into her own room.
So Mei hugged her pillow and blanket, then climbed onto Otis's bed again.
The two of them lay on the same bed, the room light still on.
Otis reached out to turn it off, but Mei's voice stopped him.
"Don't turn it off…"
Otis said, "We can't sleep like this. Besides, I'm right here. Whatever ghost or demon shows up, I'll give each of them a good punch. Okay?"
Mei hesitated a moment.
"…Then… turn it off."
Otis turned off the light.
The room sank into darkness and silence, with only the soft hum of the AC.
He turned to the side and found Mei's eyes looking straight at him.
They stared at each other without speaking.
Mei was still a little scared, but having Otis next to her made things much better.
In the dark, she looked at him, studying him intently.
A bit embarrassed, she asked, "Was I… too noisy?"
Otis replied, "So you finally realized?"
