Chapter 8 - Experimenting Despairingly - Part 2

Kaan was mentally drained, but he had to keep going. He finished the copper tubing and soldered it to the piston chamber, creating his first experimental condensing room. Anxious, he started the engine.

"Oh, crap!"

BOOOOM!

The side of the condensing room ripped open with a dull, shattering sound. "Why did you explode all of a sudden?" he screamed.

He quickly saw the problem: because he was so focused on making the parts leakproof, he had sealed the condensing room too thoroughly, trapping a massive amount of pressure.

"Experiment 41: Failed," he muttered, writing in his notebook. "It exploded. Reduce the mixture of coal dust-mud-sewage-hay in the sealant, and design a small pressure release valve."

He applied the insulation to the engine, experimenting with different mixture ratios until he found an optimal one. "1-4-2-1 seems to be the best," he noted. Now, he was ready to try fabricating the condensing room again.

"Hey, Khan."

"Oh, hey boss. I didn't expect to see you here," said Kaan, quickly trying to hide his notebook full of English writing and complex equations.

"How's the machine? Is it working?" Elfan asked, his voice curious.

"I got it running, boss. Now I'm trying to improve its performance," Kaan explained. "Just by applying a coat of heat insulation, I got a ten percent efficiency boost. Now, my next step is to make the condensing room."

"Fire it up, let me see," Elfan instructed.

"Okay, boss." Kaan started the fire. The engine began humming. WROM! WROM! ... BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM...

"Wow," said Elfan. "I can already hear the difference. Nice work. Do you need anything?"

"Actually, I'm a little bit low on funds, sir," Kaan admitted.

Elfan reached for his bag, grabbed a small sack, and gave it to Kaan. "Is this enough?"

Kaan opened the sack, startled. "It's more than enough, sir. There are twenty Golrums in here!"

Meanwhile, outside the warehouse door:

"Twenty GOLRUMS?" one worker hissed.

"Shh! They'll hear us!" another cautioned.

"What in the world? That's my four years' pay!"

"We should rob this kid," whispered the first worker.

"Come again?"

The worker, startled, turned around and saw Lysander towering over them. "I didn't mean it!" he stammered.

"So if it weren't for me, you would steal from your own boss, ha?" Lysander grabbed the worker by his collar. "Get out of here before I crack open y'all skull with my fist!"

The workers ran away. "Goddamn thieves," Lysander thought.

Back inside:

"Thank you, boss. I will definitely succeed!" Kaan said with genuine excitement. Elfan simply nodded, turned around, and went back to the factory.

"Nice, now I can sell these on Earth!" Kaan thought. "First, let's buy some more lead and continue experimenting."

He went around town, buying the things he needed. "Wow, a Golrum is really precious. I did a lot of shopping, and I still have nine Golrums left."

He went back to the warehouse. "Experiment 42: success!"

The condensing room held firm. WROM! WROM! The engine ran with a stable, rhythmic beat.

"Nice! I did it. Now, let's keep this secret so I can build an alternator and charge this damned ring!"

DING!

Congratulations! You made a significant contribution to the dimension by making James Watt's Condensator.

You will be rewarded extra when you return.

Kaan stared at the notification with excitement in his face. "Nice, now I can start experimenting with alternators. I am tired, let's sleep for the night and continue tomorrow."
