Chapter 5: to the capital
I awake on a queen size bed in a room with a flat-screen TV and a game console. I get up and put on my work clothes. I leave the house without eating and get in the car. I proceeded to drive to work along the way, I'm in traffic and saw multiple car accidents. When I get to work I clock in and then get my ambulance ready to work. Work was going well until 8 hours into your 12 hours of work your company sends out a notification that they are behind on transfers so a holdover is in effect. Now your 12 hour shift is a 16 hour shift for the fourth time this week and it's only Thursday. After your 16 hours of work on your way home you realize that you're not going to have time to cook anything so you go for fast food. You get home to eat and realize that you need more money for bills so you pick up 2 extra days of work and go to sleep. This repeats over and over again for 6 months straight. The job you once loved is now the job you hate going to due to overwork and not enough pay. One day you wake up and have enough of everything you walk into the kitchen, grab a knife, hold it to your neck and stab....
I awaken in my room with Johnathan looking at me with a scared look on his face. I wipe my forehead and find I'm drenched in sweat from head to toe.
"Are you ok big bro." Johnathan asked me, still looking fearful.
"Yea, why wouldn't I be?" I say I don't like the look of my little brother being scared of me.
"You had sparky, zappy things all around you." He said slowly walking closer.
I look around and notice burn marks on some places in the room. "What the fuck is happening. I say as I look at my hand wondering why this is happening and why I dreamed about my old life. Trying to shake the worry away, I get up to go clean myself up. "John, do you want me to help you back in bed or do you want to wait for me to get cleaned up and you can sleep with me."
"I'll wait for you to get back." Johnathan said as he sat down on his bed.
I went to the bathroom to wash up but because mom and dad are sleeping I had to use cold water. I put on some new pj's and walk to the mirror. When looking in the mirror I noticed that my silvery white hair now had black tips. "Ok something is definitely happening to me." I push all the worry aside and go back to my room.
When walking into the room Johnathan was already in my bed laying down. I get into bed and go to sleep hoping to never dream of that again.
The next morning came around. waking up in the middle of the night made me and Johnathan both overslept. After waking up I helped him change into his clothes. The smell of breakfast was in the air so we went to eat. Walking in the kitchen at the table was mom, dad, Whisper, and "Nes?" I subconsciously say her name out loud.
"Hello young master." Nes said with a smile on her face.
"Wait mom isn't going into labor is she?" Right after I said that a spoon hit my head. "Ow, what she only comes when you need help while you're pregnant or are giving birth." I say to Jade, wondering why she threw the spoon at me.
She is also here to pick up me, your sister and brother." Jade told me.
"Oh, so she works for our grandparents? That makes sense." I say while nodding my head and taking my seat.
Nes is the maid woman that was there when I was born. She apparently works for my mom's side of the family. She is always nice which is unnerving. Plus she always calls me young master but I'm no Noble. While at the table dad gives me a part of leather armor that I will be wearing during our trip to the capital.
After eating breakfast mom told me to go put on my armor and get my stuff packed to get ready to leave so I did just that. I put on a blue long sleeve shirt and blue pants. I put on the leather Chest plate, the belt to hold my sword and metal arm and shin guards.
"Omg you're so cute." Jade said, looking at her son. "You look like a real adventurer."
"No, he looks lame." Whisper said.
"Girl, you are such a hater." I replied.
"Ok Ok enough you two. We have to get going now or we're not gonna make it in time." Paul said ready to go.
We made our way to the gate of the town. At the gate you can see a group of wagons and carriages.
"Remember that we are acting as Mercenaries during this trip to the capital." Paul said to me to remind me to be on my best behavior. "If a fight breaks out you are to protect the carriages and focus on surviving."
"Yes sir." I said to him while doing the salute that he taught me. Apparently the salute for our kingdom is putting your right hand on your heart.
As we approached the caravan a few people greeted Paul. Apparently whenever Paul and Jade needed to go to the capital they acted as Mercenaries for this merchant.
"Paul, my old friend, how's the wife." said a guy about 4ft even with red hair and brown eyes.
"Steward, she's been just fine. You should come to the house when you get the chance." Paul said as they shaked hands.
Steward noticed me and spoke. "Oh, you must be one of the little ones. You look so much like Paul when he was younger."
"Thanks, the names Tone by the way." I introduced myself.
"Good. Come on, let's get ready to go." Steward clapped his hands and everyone started to prepare to embark.
The carriage I was told to protect is the one in the middle of the line formation. Paul was in the back not too far from me. I was sitting on the side of the carriage, I was supposed to be walking but the perks of being a child is that people let you get away with stuff.
It was at this moment that a voice from the carriage spoke. "Hey, what's your name?" The voice sounded like a kid's.
"Why should I tell you my ?name?" I said, messing around with a grin on my face.
"Why not." the kid said.
'Is that all they're going to say?'
I sighed and then answered. "My name is Tone." After I said that I heard a noise like that of someone falling. "Are you good in there?"
"Yea, sorry, I tripped." they said.
'This person is clumsy' is what I thought. Right then the door to the carriage open and a dirty orange haired girl peaked her head out.
"My name is Nae."
