Chapter 6 - Day two

Yuri and Haru sit close together at their table, but it isn't as comfortable as before. It wasn't as warm, and neither of them say a word. Haru suddenly gets up and drags Yuri away to an isolated little bench far away, surrounded by trees.

"Why won't you say anything, Yuri? I hate fighting like this. You know how much I love you...right?"

Yuri sighs and looks away. That same, tense silence dawning on them again. Haru's eyes fill with tears and he shakes Yuri's shoulder.

"Yuri...you know, right? Right?!"

Yuri says nothing. His eyes fill with sadness, and he responds with a small shake of his head. Haru's eyes fill with even more tears. He sobs.

"Yuri! Talk to me! You need to know I love you!"

Yuri take Haru's hand and hugs him tight.

"Shh...calm down, Haru. It's just...my past. I don't trust people easily."

Haru nods. His tears subsiding slightly.

"Do you wanna talk about it?"

Yuri smiles sadly. Shaking his head

"No..I..I really don't."

The two exchange an understanding glance. Haru nods and they both walk back to the cabins, the air is still charged with tension, but it's softer now. Understanding. Hopeful. They return to Riku staring right at them

"So..figured it out?" Riku mutters, watching Yuri's bright smile now.

"Yeah. we did." Yuri says, kissing Haru on the cheek. It makes Riku's heart burn.

"Huh..that's good for you."

Riku says, getting up and walking away. Yuri frowns, but doesn't comment for now. He knew this would happen, especially after he and Riku almost kissed in their bunk room.

Yuri and Haru walked slowly back to the cabins, their hands brushing occasionally, but neither letting go. The silence between them wasn't heavy this time; it was tentative, like a bridge being rebuilt after a storm. The trees around them swayed gently in the evening breeze, and the fading sunlight painted dappled patterns on the ground.

Haru glanced at Yuri, his fingers still entwined with his. "You're really okay now?" he asked quietly.

Yuri gave a small, soft smile. "Yeah… I think I am. Thanks for… caring."

Haru chuckled, though it was tinged with lingering worry. "You don't have to thank me. I just… I don't want to lose you, Yuri. Ever."

Yuri's chest tightened. He wanted to say more, wanted to reassure Haru fully, but the words lodged in his throat. Instead, he leaned his head slightly against Haru's shoulder, letting the silence speak for him. Haru leaned closer, resting his cheek atop Yuri's head, and for the first time in hours—or maybe days—they felt steady.

When they reached the cabins, they noticed Riku sitting on the porch steps, his legs stretched out, arms crossed. He didn't smile; instead, he gave a faint, teasing shake of his head.

"So… figured it out?" he asked again, voice dry but softer than before, watching Yuri's bright expression and the way Haru stayed close.

Yuri's cheeks warmed as he smiled and brushed a quick kiss on Haru's cheek. "Yeah. We did."

Riku huffed and got to his feet, muttering something under his breath, then turned and walked away, leaving a trail of faint footsteps. Yuri followed his movement with a small frown but didn't comment.

Haru tightened his grip on Yuri's hand, and the warmth of it reminded him that while Riku's presence would always be complicated, he didn't need to worry about it for now. "You okay?" he whispered.

Yuri nodded, though his frown lingered a little. "I am… mostly."

They entered their cabin side by side, the tension between them softened but still present like a shadow behind their smiles. Inside, the light was dim, and the smell of pine and faint smoke from the fire pit outside filled the space. Haru set down their bags, and Yuri followed, moving to the small table by the window.

"You wanna sit?" Haru asked, gesturing toward the chairs, though he stayed close enough that Yuri felt him.

Yuri nodded. "Yeah… sure."

They sat, hands still linked, fingers brushing, but neither speaking. It wasn't uncomfortable, exactly, just… careful. Careful and fragile.

Finally, Haru spoke, his voice low and hesitant. "Yuri… I know you said you didn't want to talk about your past… but I want you to know, whatever it is, it doesn't change how I feel about you."

Yuri's lips curved faintly. "I know. And I… appreciate it. More than you know."

Haru's chest swelled. He wanted to reach across and pull Yuri into a hug, but he hesitated, letting Yuri set the pace. That had been the lesson over the last tense hours: patience.

Minutes passed. The wind outside rustled through the trees, carrying with it the distant laughter of other campers, but inside, it was quiet. Yuri finally leaned a little closer, resting his head lightly against Haru's shoulder.

"I… I'm glad you dragged me out there," he murmured.

Haru smiled softly, pressing his head against Yuri's. "Me too. I couldn't stand not knowing how you felt."

Yuri's fingers tightened around Haru's just slightly. "I don't want to fight like that again."

"Me neither," Haru said softly, thumb brushing over Yuri's knuckles. "Not ever."

They stayed like that for a while, watching the shadows shift across the room, the tension slowly dissolving into a quiet comfort.

Eventually, they looked up to see Riku leaning casually against the doorframe, his expression unreadable. "So… all good now?" he asked, tone teasing, though there was a subtle softness there.

Yuri glanced at Haru, who just gave a small shrug and a smile. Yuri returned a small, shy smile to Riku. "Yeah… we're good."

Riku raised an eyebrow and shook his head. "Huh… well, I guess that's good for you two." He turned to leave but paused, glancing back at Yuri. There was a faint, mischievous smirk on his face. "Don't get too comfortable. I'm not done teasing either of you."

Yuri laughed softly, shaking his head, and Haru chuckled beside him. The warmth returned slowly, like the sun breaking through clouds, but they both knew some things couldn't be fully erased—especially the complicated threads between them and Riku.

Haru nudged Yuri gently. "Come on. Let's finish unpacking. Maybe make some hot chocolate?"

Yuri nodded, feeling the heaviness of earlier moments lift just enough to enjoy this. He followed Haru to the small kitchenette, letting his hand brush against Haru's along the counter. The air was warmer now, lighter, and for the first time that day, Yuri let himself relax fully.

As they worked side by side, quietly chatting about small, mundane things—how many marshmallows to put in the chocolate, which mugs to use—Riku's footsteps echoed softly outside. Yuri's eyes flicked toward the window and caught sight of him staring briefly before walking away again, and he smiled faintly to himself.

It wasn't perfect. There were still moments of tension, still tiny fissures left over from unspoken words and nearly-crossed boundaries. But for now, they were together, and that was enough.

Haru poured the hot chocolate into two mugs, handing one to Yuri with a teasing wink. "First sip goes to the person who forgave me for dragging them out of the cabin," he said.

Yuri laughed, taking the mug and holding it close. "Then I guess I get it. But you better not try that again."

Haru grinned, leaning closer. "No promises. But I'll try."

They clinked mugs gently, a small toast to the fragile peace between them. And as they sipped, side by side, the tension from earlier moments dissolved into warmth, trust, and something quietly beautiful—the kind of closeness that only comes after fighting through fear and misunderstanding.

Later, when they finally settled near the fire pit outside the cabin, Yuri rested his head against Haru's shoulder. "Thank you," he murmured.

"For what?" Haru asked, brushing a hand through Yuri's hair.

"For not giving up on me," Yuri said softly. "For being patient… even when I make it hard."

Haru's chest tightened. "Always," he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Yuri's head.

Just then, screams and cheers came from the main campground. The festival was starting. Yuri and Haru rushed over, and looked straight up at the night sky. A beautiful display of fireworks just exploded into the cool air. Couples all around them were starting to group up, and they knew that they had to do with one look.

Yuri and Haru smiled at each other, and chuckled softly.

"Isn't it a tradition to kiss under the mistletoe on Christmas?" Ren asked.

"I guess it is..but we don't have one, do we?"

"No..I guess."

They fell into a comfortable silence, trapped in their own world, away from screams and cheers. They surely didn't have a mistletoe, but it meant nothing. Their lips met softly, and for the first time in a while, Yuri felt at home.
