Chapter 268 - The Technical Session

[Konohagakure — Hokage Tower, Sealing Card Chamber, October 31st, 10:14 AM]

The Sealing Card chamber was on the second floor of the tower, in a room that had no windows and a door that required two chakra signatures to open. The Card itself hung in the air at the room's center, a pale gold rectangle that pulsed once every four seconds. The pulse was Tobirama's heartbeat, which Tobirama had declined to discuss.

Kabuto sat at the low table beneath it with two blank scrolls, three ink pots, and the focused expression of a man who had spent twenty years being the smartest person in any given room and was not entirely sure whether that would be true today.

The Card brightened. A voice came through it, flat and precise, with absolutely zero warmth and one hundred percent accuracy.

Tobirama: The third binding layer. Show me your implementation from the left margin. Annotate as you write.

Kabuto reached for the first scroll. He began to write. His hand moved quickly — he had prepared for this, had spent the previous night running through the sequence until it was automatic. The annotations came in small, neat columns beside the primary seal characters, explaining each decision in the technical shorthand that sealing specialists used when they assumed their audience was competent.

Tobirama was silent for ninety seconds while Kabuto wrote.

Then: You've doubled the redundancy in the release trigger. Why.

Kabuto: Because a single trigger is vulnerable to external chakra interference during the release window. If the target chooses to go and an enemy disrupts the array mid-sequence, the soul is caught between states. The double trigger closes the window in two steps — the first confirms intent, the second executes. Disruption during the second step defaults to completion rather than collapse.

A pause. Longer this time.

Tobirama: I didn't consider that failure state.

Kabuto looked at the Card. He had the expression of a man who has just been told something he did not expect and is deciding how to receive it.

Kabuto: The failure state only occurs if someone is actively trying to disrupt the release. Most Edo Tensei implementations don't account for it because most users don't expect resistance.

Tobirama: Because most users don't want the resurrected dead to have rights.

The room was very quiet.

Shikaku, sitting in the corner with his notes, did not look up. He was the kind of man who understood when a silence needed company and when it needed to be left alone.

Tobirama: Continue. From the fourth layer.

The session ran four hours.

At the two-hour mark, Kabuto corrected a flaw in his own implementation that Tobirama had identified in seventeen seconds. He corrected it without complaint and moved on. At the three-hour mark, Tobirama walked him through a structural improvement that reduced the counter-protocol's chakra cost by a third. Kabuto spent ten minutes verifying it, confirmed it was correct, and added it to the primary scroll.

At the four-hour mark, Tobirama said: This is near-complete. The implementation will require a second session for the final integration layer and one controlled field test. The field test will be supervised.

Kabuto: Understood.

Tobirama: One more thing.

Kabuto waited.

Tobirama: The double trigger. The one that defaults to completion during disruption. That decision protects a choosing soul at the cost of the summoner's control. Orochimaru would not have made that decision.

Kabuto: No. He wouldn't.

Tobirama: You made it anyway.

Kabuto: Yes.

Another pause. Then, from the Sealing Card, three words — flat, precise, no warmth, absolute:

Tobirama: Good work, Kabuto.

Shikaku wrote it down. He did not editorialize. The note said: T-sama issued direct commendation at 14:31. Suggest Hokage-sama be informed.

Hiruzen read the note at his desk eleven minutes later. He read it twice. Then he picked up his pipe, lit it for the second time that day, and exhaled a slow thin line of smoke toward the ceiling.

"Well," he said to the empty office. "There it is."

The chat scroll on his desk pulsed amber.

Naruto: Hiruzen-sama the scroll is doing something.

Hiruzen: I see it, Naruto.

Naruto: Is it a new ranking.

Hiruzen: Give it a moment.

Naruto: I'm giving it a moment.

Naruto: Okay the moment is done is it a new ranking.

Hiruzen: ...

Hiruzen: Go to the plaza, Naruto.

Naruto: ALREADY RUNNING.
