Chapter 105 - Chapter 104: Celebi

"Yellow, are we there yet?" Ace asked while riding on Rapidash's back.

"It's just ahead… it still seems a little far. Strange—how could the signal transmit this far?" Yellow said, puzzled.

Can the will of Viridian Forest really be used to transmit messages?

Ace didn't answer. He narrowed his eyes and gently patted Rapidash's neck.

Rapidash understood and accelerated again.

Several kilometers ahead, in the direction they were heading—

A light-green Pokémon flapped its wings with great difficulty. Its bright blue eyes had lost their luster, and the thin fairy wings on its back beat weaker and weaker.

In the end, it could only land on a massive tree, closing its eyes as faint fluorescence lit up around its body.

The entire forest seemed to awaken, quietly helping it recover its strength.

However, before it could rest for even a moment, a figure wearing a Senbai mask silently appeared in midair among the trees.

Long, cotton-like white hair cascaded down his head.

His figure was wrapped in a black cloak, and the white demonic mask on his face radiated a bone-chilling cold, as if it had been carved from solid ice.

"Come out, Celebi… You wouldn't want this forest to be razed to the ground, would you?"

A hoarse voice—its gender impossible to discern—echoed through the night sky. The onion-headed Pokémon on the tree slowly opened its eyes again.

"Bi… (I won't help you. The laws of time and space cannot be overturned for one person…)"

"Won't, not can't, right?"

The Masked Man instantly used Lock-On on Celebi's position.

White mist surged behind him as a red, upright bird Pokémon flapped its wings and ascended into the air, its face and chest covered in white feathers.

This penguin-like Pokémon, reminiscent of Santa Claus, carried an unbearably low temperature. With just a slight movement, the trees below were instantly coated in frost.

Delibird—an Ice/Flying-type Pokémon.

"Deli!"

Delibird flapped its wings violently, and a raging Blizzard swept across the night sky, swallowing the full moon whole.

"Bi…!"

Celebi erupted with white light. The forest trembled violently as countless leaves spun skyward, forming a violent storm that crashed directly into the Blizzard.

Leaf Storm!

"Boom—!!!"

"Whoosh—"

A powerful gust lifted Blue's skirt. She narrowed her eyes immediately, halting Squirtle's next command.

"What's going on?" Ren Ti also stopped.

"I suddenly remembered I have something to do. You two train first—I'll be right back."

Blue recalled Squirtle with a wave of her hand, then released Jigglypuff without another word, sending it soaring into the air.

Looking into the distance, she spotted a nightmare-like figure hovering at the edge of the forest.

"Masked Man…!"

Her pupils shrank, and goosebumps spread across her skin. Fear surged through her—but she didn't retreat. Gently patting Jigglypuff, she quietly advanced.

"Boom—"

Ace shielded Yellow from the violent wind, then set her down carefully.

He had also seen the ice-masked figure in the night sky. His expression grew grave.

"Masked Man… How could he be here?"

As a seasoned Pokémon fan, Ace knew very well who the Masked Man was.

But because of the man's terrifying strength—someone who had once captured Ho-Oh and Lugia—Ace had chosen not to pursue revenge for Blue during his early growth.

He hadn't expected to encounter him now.

The Masked Man's real name was Pryce—the Ice-type Gym Leader of Mahogany Gym in the Johto region and the wielder of the Ice Badge.

He was also an old friend of Professor Oak, a top-tier Trainer of the older generation, no less formidable than Oak himself.

Unlike Oak, who turned to research midway through his career, Pryce had devoted his entire life to strength.

Driven by obsession, he had over fifty years of training experience.

Among all Trainers, he was unquestionably one of the most senior figures.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga—

In his youth, Pryce trained two powerful Lapras. But an accident cost him both of them, plunging him into despair.

Later, upon learning that Celebi possessed the power to travel through time, he devised a long-term, sinister plan.

Using his ice sculpting skills, he crafted an ice mask and disguised himself as the Masked Man.

Relying on decades of accumulated power, he temporarily controlled Ho-Oh through unknown means, sending her across Kanto to search for exceptionally talented children for selection and special training.

His goal was to mold them into loyal subordinates.

At first, Pryce didn't know that Celebi could freely traverse time and space. He only sought battle, repeatedly trying to weaken and capture her.

Every attempt failed.

Worse still, he frequently fell into weakened states, losing control over Blue and the others—allowing Blue and another child, Silver, to escape.

During that escape, they also took the Rainbow Feather and the Silver Wing he had obtained from Ho-Oh and Lugia.

Later, Pryce learned from his old friend Steel about a Poké Ball capable of sealing time and space.

Such a Poké Ball required the feathers of both Ho-Oh and Lugia to form its capture net.

Furious but helpless—and having lost Blue's trail—he could only continue hunting Celebi while searching for Ho-Oh and Lugia once more.

As the Johto storyline unfolded, the Masked Man would become the most terrifying antagonist faced by countless protagonists…

"But according to the current timeline, he should still be researching and preparing in Johto."

Ace rubbed his chin, puzzled.

Then, as his gaze drifted upward, he noticed the full moon hanging in the sky—and suddenly understood.

"Tonight is the full moon… No wonder."

In the manga's setting, Celebi appears in Ilex Forest only on nights of the full moon.

Viridian Forest, as a vast primeval forest spanning large portions of Kanto, was connected to Ilex Forest as well.

Clearly, while fighting Pryce, Celebi had retreated into Viridian Forest, attempting to draw on the forest's power to resist him.

"Bang bang bang—!"

While Ace was thinking, Celebi detonated an enormous Leaf Storm.

The terrifying explosion sent the Masked Man crashing backward. Even Delibird was forced into retreat, its body riddled with wounds.

Ace shook his head slightly.

"What a pity."

A Grass-type Leaf Storm only deals one-quarter damage to an Ice/Flying-type Delibird—far from enough to deal decisive damage.

After settling Yellow in a safe spot, Ace expanded his perception to the limit and rushed toward the battlefield ahead.

Suddenly, a clear, urgent voice rang out nearby:

"Squirtle, use Water Pulse!

Jigglypuff, use Hyper Voice!

Nidorina, use Sludge Bomb!"

"?!"

Ace snapped his head around.

In the distance, Blue was commanding three Pokémon, launching a coordinated assault at the black-cloaked figure hovering within the smoke.

"Boom—!!"

The three attacks collided at once, completely engulfing the Masked Man's silhouette.

For a brief moment, smoke filled the battlefield—everything obscured from view.
