The sound disappeared just as quickly as it came, making Aurora wonder if she had just imagined it.
The forest became quiet. All she could hear was the wind moving through the trees, rustle of leaves, and the birds chirping overhead.
She turned around to head back to Asher and tell him they could continue with their journey now when the sound came again. And this time it was loud enough to let her know she's not imagining it.
It sounded like a cry, sounding weak, distressed, and very young.
Aurora immediately straightened while her brows furrowed. The sound didn't resemble any animal she recognized, nor did it sound like a bird. Instead, it almost sounded... like a child crying.
The thought sent a strange feeling through her.
Before she could investigate further, a familiar voice suddenly echoed inside her mind.
[New Mission Detected.]
Aurora's expression immediately flattened.
Of course. This was absolutely natural. Because heaven forbid she enjoy a peaceful journey.
