Chapter 17 - Encounter with the Extraordinary Scholar Merlin

Not long after, Hu Yulun and Isabella, their steps slightly weary but filled with curiosity, entered an ancient town seemingly forgotten by time. The town was like a seasoned elder, radiating a deep and enduring aura of age, every corner whispering tales of bygone legends.

The stone-paved streets were narrow and winding, snaking through the town like a slumbering giant python. On either side stood ancient wooden houses, their walls weathered and marked with deep, crisscrossing lines – an abstract and mysterious artwork etched by time. In some places, the paint had peeled away, revealing the rough wood grain beneath; in others, rain had stained the wood with dark patches. Yet, even with their worn appearance, they exuded a rustic and charming beauty that captivated the eye.

In the center of the town, an old well stood silently. The water was crystal clear, like a transparent mirror reflecting the azure sky and the drifting white clouds. Around the well, wooden buckets and ladles were placed. Some of the buckets had rough edges, as if they were recounting the labor of the past; the handles of the ladles were worn smooth and shiny by time, giving off a warm, gentle glow. Residents came and went, skillfully using the ladles to draw water from the well. An old man with white hair, his back bent, slowly leaned over, his trembling but practiced hand grasping a ladle to scoop up water, the wrinkles on his face smoothing out with a smile. A young woman approached lightly, her skirt swaying in the breeze, and as she reached for a ladle, her eyes held a look of gentleness and peace.

Hu Yulun slowly approached the well, knelt down, and gazed at the water, his eyes filled with curiosity and thought. He reached out and gently touched the water, feeling the refreshing coolness, and silently exclaimed, "This well... knows how many changes this town has seen." His brow furrowed slightly, as if trying to imagine the scenes that had once unfolded there.

Isabella stood beside him, her arms crossed over her chest, her gaze also fixed on the water. "The water is so clear, as pure as the town's soul," she said. She tilted her head slightly, closed her eyes, and absorbed the tranquil atmosphere.

Hu Yulun stood up and looked around. "Everything here makes you feel calm and at ease."

Isabella smiled and nodded. "Yes, it's as if time has slowed down here."

They continued along the street, each step seeming to tread upon a scroll of history. Passing a small shop, the wind chimes hanging at the door emitted a crisp sound in the breeze, as if welcoming them.

"I wonder what surprises this shop holds," Hu Yulun said, stepping into the small store.

The interior was filled with the scent of aged wood, and the shelves were crammed with all sorts of peculiar trinkets. There were handcrafted wooden dolls, their expressions incredibly lifelike; colorful glass beads that shimmered in the sunlight streaming through the windows; and delicate little animals woven from dried grass, looking utterly real.

Hu Yulun curiously picked up a doll, examining it closely. "The craftsmanship is exquisite. It's as if this doll has its own soul."

Isabella, meanwhile, was captivated by a string of glass beads. "These beads are so beautiful. They seem to contain countless dreams."

The shop owner, a kindly old man, smiled at them. "These are my collections from over the years. Each one has its own story."

Hu Yulun put down the doll and asked, "Can you tell us those stories?"

The old man nodded and began to recount the legends behind each item. From ancient myths to heartwarming tales that had taken place in the town, Hu Yulun and Isabella were completely engrossed.

After leaving the shop, they continued to explore the town. Without realizing it, night fell, and twinkling lights illuminated the town.

The sound of cheerful music drifted from a small tavern, drawing them inside.

The tavern was bustling with activity. People sat together, drinking, chatting, and laughing.

Hu Yulun and Isabella found a corner and sat down, ordering two glasses of the local wine.

"The atmosphere here is wonderful, it makes you forget all your troubles," Isabella said, taking a small sip of her drink, a blush rising on her cheeks.

Hu Yulun laughed in response, "Indeed, it feels like we've stepped into a world of joy, isolated from everything else."

At that moment, a bard walked onto the stage and began to tell a heroic adventure story.

Hu Yulun and Isabella listened quietly, their thoughts drifting away with the tale.

The night deepened. They returned to their lodging, filled with joy and fond memories of the town.

Lying in bed, Isabella whispered, "Today was truly a memorable day."

Hu Yulun held her hand. "Yes, I hope we have many more beautiful moments like this in the future."

In the tranquility of the small town, they gradually drifted off to sleep, anticipating that the new day would bring even more surprises and touching moments.

The next morning, the sunlight streamed through the window and landed on their faces, waking them.

They walked out of their room, and the fresh air washed over them.

"A new day has begun. I wonder what kind of adventures await us," Hu Yulun said as he stretched.

Isabella smiled. "Whatever it is, I believe it will be wonderful."

They strolled along the riverbank of the small town, the river water murmuring as it flowed, the surface shimmering with light.

Suddenly, they saw a painter sketching by the river.

The painter was engrossed in his work, the scenery on the canvas looking like a poem.

Hu Yulun and Isabella stood quietly to the side, not daring to make a sound.

After a while, the painter finished his work and turned to see them, smiling as he said, "Beautiful scenery always makes you want to record it."

Hu Yulun praised, "You've painted it so well, it's as if you've captured the entire town's soul."

The painter invited them to admire the painting together. In the picture, the town's tranquility and beauty were vividly displayed.

After saying goodbye to the painter, they continued on and encountered a lively market in the town square.

Various stalls were filled with a dazzling array of goods, including fresh vegetables and fruits, exquisite handicrafts, and fragrant, mouthwatering food.

Isabella excitedly flitted between the stalls, picking out things she liked.

Hu Yulun, on the other hand, helped carry the bags, a happy smile on his face.

After wandering around, Hu Yulun and Isabella returned to the ancient well. The sunlight now shone on the well's opening, giving it a soft halo.

Hu Yulun stood quietly by the well, his eyes a little dazed, as if recalling the details of their few days in the town. Isabella gently stroked the edge of the well, feeling its rough texture and the warmth of the years.

"It's as if everything was destined, and we're back here again," Hu Yulun murmured.

Isabella smiled at him, "Maybe this well is waiting for us to return again, to give us new inspiration."

At this moment, a gentle breeze swept by, blowing Isabella's hair. She closed her eyes, enjoying the moment of peace.

Hu Yulun squatted down, looking at the water in the well again, "Do you think this well water has witnessed all of our experiences?"

Isabella went to his side and squatted down as well. "Maybe it remembers every smile, every gasp we make."

Suddenly, a child ran over, holding a small pinwheel and laughing happily.

"Big brother and sister, do you like this well too?" the child asked innocently.

Hu Yulun patted the child's head. "Yes, it's very special."

The child blinked. "This is our town's treasure. Grandma says it has magical powers."

Isabella asked curiously, "What kind of magical powers?"

The child tilted his head and thought for a moment. "Grandma says that as long as you make a wish to the well water, your wish will come true."

Hu Yulun and Isabella exchanged a smile. Perhaps it was just a beautiful legend, but in this warm and mysterious town, anything was possible.

"Let's make a wish too," Isabella said.

They closed their eyes and silently made wishes in their hearts.

When they opened their eyes again, the sunlight seemed even brighter.

"Regardless of whether the wishes come true, this town has already given us so much beauty," Hu Yulun said with emotion.

Isabella nodded. "Yes, let's carry this beauty and continue forward."

At this moment, an old man with white hair but a vigorous spirit walked over, carrying two buckets of water. The old man wore a blue, coarse cloth garment that had been washed until it was slightly faded. A black cloth belt was tied around his waist, and the cuffs of his trousers were slightly rolled up, revealing his calves, which were covered in prominent veins. His face was etched with deep wrinkles, like the ravines carved by time, but his eyes were still bright and full of spirit, revealing the wisdom and composure of someone who had seen much of the world. The old man smiled at Hu Yulun and said, "Young man, is this your first time here? Seeing your curious expression, you seem very interested in our town." Hu Yulun quickly stood up and respectfully replied, "Yes, sir. This town is truly full of charm, especially this well. It's simply amazing…"

"I've never seen a place quite like this in all my travels." The old man chuckled heartily. "Haha, this Well is the pride of our Town. It's kept generations alive. My grandfather's generation and before, they all lived off this Well's water."

Hu Yulun asked curiously, "Sir, does this Well have any special stories? I feel like there must be a lot of legends behind it."

The old man put down his water bucket, his gaze turning distant. He said slowly, "Legend has it, long, long ago, there was a great drought. The surrounding rivers dried up, but this Well still had water. Everyone said it was a gift from heaven, protecting our Town. Also, there was a group of bandits who wanted to seize the Well, but the people of our Town united and drove them away."

Hu Yulun listened intently, sighing, "So that's how it is. This Well is not only a water source, but also a spiritual symbol of the Town."

The old man smiled and nodded, saying, "Young man, are you traveling or here on business?"

Hu Yulun replied, "I'm traveling around to broaden my horizons. I want to see different places and experience different customs."

The old man's eyes were filled with admiration. "It's good for young people to travel and see the world. It's a big world out there. But when you're away from home, you have to be careful."

Hu Yulun said gratefully, "Thank you for the reminder, sir. I will be careful. Sir, are there any other places worth seeing in this Town?"

The old man thought for a moment and said, "There's an Ancient Temple on the west side of the Town, it's quite old, you could take a look."

Hu Yulun said excitedly, "Great, I'll go take a look right now. Thank you, sir!"

With that, the old man picked up the bucket of water and slowly left, humming an unknown tune.

In a quiet and somewhat secluded corner of the Town, Hu Yulun was strolling idly, pondering the mysterious past of this ancient Town. At this moment, sunlight filtered through the mottled leaves, casting fragmented shadows that added a touch of dreamlike color to the corner. A gentle breeze blew, carrying a hint of coolness, and caressing the petals of the wildflowers along the road.

The stone path under his feet was winding and twisting, with tender green moss sprouting from the cracks between the stones, as if telling the long passage of time. The wooden houses on both sides of the street were scattered, some with their doors and windows tightly closed, others half-open, emitting faint sounds of laughter. At the corner of the street, a small general store had a string of wind chimes hanging at its door, emitting a crisp tinkling sound in the breeze.

Just then, he unexpectedly met an old scholar of extraordinary temperament: Merlin.

Although Merlin was already advanced in years, time had carved deep grooves like ravines on his weathered face. However, his eyes radiated a brilliant and wise light, like stars, as if he could easily penetrate layers of mist and see through all the complexities and illusions of the world.

His long robe, though somewhat old and worn, was still neat and clean, without a trace of wrinkles or dirt. The hem of the robe fluttered gently in the breeze, as if whispering the stories of the vicissitudes of time. And in his hand, he always held a yellowed ancient book, its cover worn and its corners slightly curled, yet he regarded it as a treasure, unwilling to let go for a moment.

Merlin's hair was as white as snow, but he combed it meticulously and neatly. His amiable face always radiated a warm, spring-like smile, and every wrinkle seemed to contain endless wisdom and compassion. He squinted slightly, his eyes filled with peace and composure, which naturally made people feel a sense of closeness, as if they could feel endless tranquility and peace around him.

With a heart full of curiosity and respect, Hu Yulun took the initiative to bow slightly and said politely, "Good day, sir! It's truly wonderful to meet you on this street, filled with the gentle breeze, swaying shadows, and a simple, ancient charm."

Merlin smiled and nodded in response. Seeing this, Hu Yulun continued, "I'm new here, and seeing your extraordinary temperament, I was wondering if I could have a few words with you?"

Merlin stroked his beard gently and replied gently, "Young man, feel free to speak. This quiet Town is perfect for a conversation."

And so, the two began to converse. Soon, Hu Yulun was spellbound by Merlin's vast, ocean-like knowledge and profound, unique insights.

Merlin spoke eloquently, his gestures flowing with his words: "The mysteries of this world are endless." When he spoke of the long history of the Eria Continent and those mysterious organizations, his insights were particularly unique, as if he had personally experienced those turbulent times.

Merlin continued, his gestures accompanying his words, his expression shifting between seriousness and excitement: "The history of the Eria Continent is long, like a magnificent epic. In the distant past, various races stood on the continent, constantly in conflict. Initially, humans struggled to survive in this land, battling the harsh natural environment and ferocious beasts. Then, they gradually established city-states and nations, developing unique civilizations.

In this long process, the power of magic was gradually mastered by people. That mysterious magic is like the most brilliant starlight in the universe, or a bottomless, dark whirlpool. The use of magic is sometimes accompanied by dazzling light, like fireworks blooming in the night sky. Other times, it's silent, but it can change everything around in an instant. For example, Healing Magic, that gentle green light, like a spring breeze, gently brushes the injured person's body, and the wound heals at a visible speed, restoring it to its original state. Offensive Magic, on the other hand, can be like a raging fire, instantly engulfing enemies in a sea of flames, or like freezing ice, freezing opponents into immovable ice sculptures.

There was once a time when dark forces shrouded the continent, and evil mages attempted to rule the world, unleashing a storm of blood and gore. They manipulated dark magic, and the black mist spread, bringing despair and fear wherever it went. But the forces of justice never yielded, and brave warriors stepped forward to engage in a thrilling life-and-death struggle against the dark forces.

Then there are those mysterious organizations, the most notable of which is the 'Shadow Guardians'. They are like ghosts in the darkness, their whereabouts uncertain, but they always silently guard the balance and peace of the continent. Their members come from all races and possess extraordinary abilities and firm beliefs. It is said that some of their masters can use magic to become invisible in the dark, completing difficult tasks without anyone knowing. They often hide in the shadows, monitoring every move on the continent. When evil forces stir, they will strike with lightning speed, instantly nipping the threat in the bud. Their bases are hidden in deep mountains and secluded valleys, protected by powerful magic barriers, making them difficult for outsiders to detect.

There is also the 'Order of Light', which is committed to spreading light and hope, helping the suffering people in every corner of the continent. The Light Magic they cast is like warm sunshine, dispelling the shadows and fear in people's hearts. They wear white robes and hold staffs that shine with holy light, bringing life and warmth wherever they go. But their internal structure is not monolithic; there are various power struggles and disagreements in ideology. Some members advocate actively intervening in the affairs of the continent, using strong means to uphold justice, while others believe that they should guide people in a gentle way, allowing them to awaken the light within themselves.

In addition to these two organizations, there is also the 'Mystic Explorers League'. This organization brings together the most intelligent and curious people on the continent, dedicated to exploring ancient ruins and lost knowledge. To find the secrets buried by time, they risk crossing dangerous jungles, venturing deep into desolate deserts, and even braving cursed castles. Their scholars can decipher ancient magic runes and solve complex puzzles, revealing forgotten histories and powerful magic skills.

The Nature Guardians Association is also a force to be reckoned with. They revere the power of nature, maintaining close ties with the Elves in the forests, the Giants in the mountains, and the Mermaids in the ocean. They can communicate with animals and use the power of nature to heal the land's wounds. When humans overexploit natural resources, they step forward, using their magic to stop them and ensure the ecological balance of the continent is maintained.

At this point, Merlin patted Hu Yulun on the shoulder, his gaze focused on him, and said earnestly, "Young man, the mysteries of this continent are far more profound than this, waiting for you to explore and discover."

Hu Yulun listened with rapt attention, his eyes fixed on Merlin's every expression and movement, as if he too was immersed in the magnificent river of history, his heart filled with a longing for the unknown and a passion for exploration.

Merlin stroked his beard, his eyes deep and distant, as if he were traveling through time, seeing the very beginnings of these mysterious organizations. He slowly began, "Child, let me tell you in detail about the origins and purposes of these mysterious organizations. First, the Shadow Guardians. In the distant past, when darkness spread across every corner of the continent like a plague, evil forces ran rampant, and the people were mired in misery, with cries of pain echoing to the heavens. At that moment of despair, a group of fearless warriors with great strength and unwavering will stepped forward. They swore an oath that even if they had to hide in the dark, even if they had to bear the misunderstandings of the world, they would protect the peace and tranquility of the continent and completely eradicate the seeds of evil. Thus, the Shadow Guardians came into being, their mission to silently guard the delicate balance of the continent, not allowing the dark forces any chance to revive.

Then there's the Order of Light, which originated from a group of mages and priests with compassion and righteousness. In those years filled with suffering and sorrow, they witnessed the misfortunes of the world, and their hearts were deeply pained. So, they decided to come together, using the warm power of light to dispel the shadows of darkness, and using love and hope to heal the wounds of people's hearts. Their purpose was pure and noble, to let light and warmth fill every corner of the continent, so that every soul would no longer be shrouded in fear, and so that every heart would rekindle its love and longing for life.

The origin of the Mystic Explorers League was filled with an endless longing and pursuit of the unknown world. When most people on the continent were satisfied with the existing knowledge and power, immersed in ease and complacency, there were those brave people full of curiosity and the spirit of exploration. They were not satisfied with the superficial appearances, eager to unveil the mysterious veil of ancient ruins and lost knowledge. Their hearts burned with a fire of longing for truth, determined to excavate the precious secrets that had been deeply buried by time, bringing new possibilities and breakthroughs for the development and progress of the continent."

The Natural Guardians Association traces its roots back to the primal reverence and deep love for nature. When people, driven by fleeting interests, overexploited and wantonly destroyed nature, some Elves, Druids proficient in the power of nature, and many others who loved nature were filled with indignation. They gathered together, took a firm oath, and resolved to protect the balance and harmony of nature with their lives. Their purpose was clear and resolute: to ensure that the ecological environment of the continent was not destroyed, to keep the mountains majestic, the rivers flowing, the forests flourishing, the grasslands full of life and vitality, and to let the beauty of nature bloom eternally."

Hu Yulun widened his eyes, full of curiosity, and asked, "Mr. Merlin, these mysterious organizations you mentioned are so powerful. Have they ever cooperated or clashed with each other?"

Merlin stroked his beard, narrowed his eyes slightly, and said slowly, "Child, the stories within this are complex. The Shadow Guardians and the Order of Light once joined hands to jointly resist a huge dark magic disaster. But in normal times, due to differences in ideas and methods of action, there are also occasional conflicts."

Hu Yulun leaned forward, eagerly asking, "What kind of conflicts specifically?"

Merlin sighed and said, "The Shadow Guardians act secretly, with decisive methods, sometimes even appearing cold and ruthless. The Order of Light, on the other hand, focuses more on solving problems in an open and honest manner. They believe that some of the Shadow Guardians' methods are too extreme. For example, in dealing with an Evil Mage, the Shadow Guardians advocated direct elimination, leaving no future troubles; the Order of Light wanted to try to influence and redeem."

Hu Yulun frowned, pondering, and said, "Will such differences affect the stability of the continent?"

Merlin smiled and shook his head, "Although there are differences, it is precisely this mutual checks and balances that prevents all parties from easily crossing the bottom line, which, to some extent, maintains the balance of the continent."

Hu Yulun nodded thoughtfully and asked again, "What about the other organizations? For example, the Mystic Explorers League and the Natural Guardians Association."

Merlin's gaze deepened as he continued, "The Mystic Explorers League is always seeking ancient knowledge and secrets. Sometimes, they inadvertently cross paths with the areas guarded by the Natural Guardians Association, leading to minor conflicts. But most of the time, they understand each other, as they both aim for the continent's future."

Hu Yulun sighed, "This is truly a continent full of mystery and stories!"

Merlin smiled and patted Hu Yulun on the shoulder. "My boy, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There's so much more waiting for you to discover. ..."

At that moment, a colorful butterfly, like an elegant dancer, fluttered past. Its vibrant wings shimmered in the sunlight, sparkling like countless tiny jewels. The way it moved its wings seemed to have a mysterious rhythm, each flap composing a silent melody in the air. The butterfly lightly landed on a blooming flower branch, where the flowers were in full bloom, their petals layered and fragrant. The butterfly gently twitched its antennae, which seemed like delicate aerials, receiving information from its surroundings. It appeared truly captivated by the wonderful story, remaining still as if it were also listening intently.

Hu Yulun, however, was completely absorbed, listening with rapt attention. His eyes were wide, and Merlin's figure was reflected in his bright eyes. He didn't blink, his gaze fixed on Merlin's every expression and movement, as if trying to imprint everything about Merlin into his mind. His body leaned forward unconsciously, his hands slightly clenched, the knuckles turning white from his intense focus. His heart beat rapidly, as if resonating with the mysterious story, each beat echoing the ups and downs of the tale.

This old gentleman is truly knowledgeable! Hu Yulun thought to himself in amazement. His face was filled with admiration and delight, as if a flower basking in the spring breeze, blooming with genuine respect. A slight smile played on his lips, and he murmured, "Such a wonderful story really opened my eyes. There are so many amazing things about this world that I didn't know."

Gradually, Hu Yulun snapped out of his trance. He slowly straightened up, his movements slow and solemn, as if gradually returning to reality from a dream. He took a deep breath, the air long and steady, as if to draw all the fresh air into his chest to clear his head. His eyes became firm and bright, like stars twinkling in the night sky, filled with determination and desire.

He thought to himself: In this exploration journey filled with the unknown and mystery, Merlin will undoubtedly be an important partner in my quest for the truth. This old gentleman was like a thick encyclopedia, containing endless knowledge and wisdom. Thinking of this, Hu Yulun couldn't help but speak, "Mr. Merlin, it's my good fortune to have met you. Your every word is like a beacon, illuminating my path forward. I hope you will give me more guidance in the future. I am like a child groping in the dark, urgently in need of your guidance. What you have told me has given me a whole new understanding of the world. I long to follow in your footsteps and uncover more mysteries. Even if the road ahead is full of thorns, I will not retreat." Hu Yulun's voice was full of sincerity and determination, his eyes filled with anticipation.

Merlin smiled slightly, his expression as warm and benevolent as the spring sun. His eyes conveyed encouragement and anticipation, his gaze gentle yet powerful, as if he could see through Hu Yulun's heart and give him endless strength. He said, "Young man, it's incredibly valuable to have such a thirst for knowledge. The truth of this world is hidden behind layers of mist, much like distant mountain peaks shrouded in clouds. But do not be afraid. As long as you have a firm resolve, as hard as steel; are undaunted by difficulties and obstacles, as brave as a warrior; and are good at thinking, as wise as a sage, the truth will await you ahead. I am also willing to share everything I know with you, to help you on this path of exploration. Remember, every setback is an opportunity for growth, and every confusion is a step closer to the truth."

Hu Yulun nodded solemnly and said, "Mr. Merlin, I will keep your words in my heart. I will certainly live up to your expectations and strive to explore and discover." His eyes sparkled with determination, as if he could already see the road ahead, full of challenges yet also full of hope.

The sunlight fell upon them, casting long shadows, as if foretelling the long and miraculous journey they were about to embark on.
