Chapter 93: Prom Preparation - Part 1
POV: Caroline Forbes
Ten days before prom, and Caroline's transforming the Mystic Falls High gymnasium into both magical venue and military fortress.
"Bonnie, can the protection runes be incorporated into the decorations?" Caroline asks, pointing to her diagram.
"I can inscribe them on the streamer backing," Bonnie confirms. "Students won't see them, but they'll create overlapping magical barriers across the entire space."
Sam's clones test every entrance systematically—Phasing passing through walls to find structural weaknesses, Sensory detecting magical vulnerabilities, Defensive Shield calculating optimal barrier positions.
Connor, cleared for limited activity, installs hunter weapons disguised as lighting equipment. "Wooden stake launchers hidden in the stage scaffolding, vervain gas dispersal system integrated with the fog machines, UV lights that can be weaponized if needed."
"Make sure they're not visible to students," Caroline instructs. "This needs to look like I went overboard on security because of 'recent incidents,' not like we're preparing for war."
Klaus's four loyal hybrids patrol the perimeter in shifts, maintaining coverage without being obvious about it. Sheriff Liz positions tactical units at nearby locations under cover of "enhanced security for school events."
To any student or parent, it appears Caroline Forbes channeled her anxiety into creating the most secure, well-planned prom in school history.
Actually, they're preparing for Expression-powered dark witch to attempt mass murder.
Ten days into preparation, Caroline breaks down.
It happens in the empty gymnasium after everyone else has left. Sam finds her sitting among the partially hung decorations, crying quietly.
"This should be magical," Caroline says through tears. "Prom, graduation, normal senior year memories. Instead we're preparing for massacre. I'm coordinating defensive positions instead of seating charts, weapon placements instead of flower arrangements."
Sam sits beside her, pulling her close. "After prom, after we stop Shane, we'll have the rest of our lives for normal. I promise."
Elena, who'd come looking for Caroline, adds from the doorway: "We're alive to have these moments because Sam keeps us safe. That's worth more than perfect prom photos."
Caroline wipes her eyes, composing herself with visible effort. "Then let's give everyone the best prom possible before all hell breaks loose. They deserve one perfect night before they graduate into whatever chaos comes next."
She stands, determination replacing despair, and returns to her planning binder.
Training with Bonnie intensifies over the following week.
My Magic Absorption clone serves as both practice target and safety mechanism, allowing Bonnie to push her limits without risking magical backlash.
"Maintain the protection barrier while throwing offensive spells," I instruct. "Shane won't give you time to switch between defense and attack."
Bonnie channels Bennett ancestors, creating shimmering barrier around herself while simultaneously throwing aneurysm spells at targets Sam's Strength clone has set up. The multitasking is exhausting but necessary.
"Add healing magic to the rotation," I continue. "Cycle all three continuously—protect, attack, heal. That's what combat against Shane requires."
By the end of the week, Bonnie can maintain defensive barriers, throw combat-level offensive spells, and channel healing magic in continuous rotation for fifteen minutes before exhaustion forces her to stop.
Klaus watches one training session with genuine approval. "The Bennett witch is formidable. Shane won't find her easy prey."
But afterward, Bonnie admits her fear to me privately. "What if his Expression overpowers my light magic? He's been building death energy for years. I've been training for months."
"You matched him at the church," I remind her. "And that was before this intensive training. You're stronger now."
"Maybe," Bonnie says. "But Sam, Expression is... tempting. Raw power without wisdom to guide it. Fighting him means exposing myself to that temptation repeatedly."
It's the fear I can't solve—that saving everyone might cost Bonnie her soul.

Mind Shield practices anti-compulsion fields, preparing to protect three hundred minds simultaneously from Shane's mental attacks.
Magic Absorption readies to drain Expression power, his purple-black form flickering with anticipated energy consumption.
Defensive Shield calculates maximum barrier coverage—can he protect the entire gymnasium or just specific zones?
Strength positions for physical combat, ready to engage Shane directly if magical defenses fail.
Seven versions of myself, each specialized, coordinating to save three hundred lives.
Caroline finds me standing among my clones, and her smile is soft despite the stress. "Ready?"
"As ready as we'll ever be," I reply.
