Chapter 17 - Insanity 3: A Mechanical Heart (7)

Destroying the research objects was the goal of his mission. The man looked at the little girl.

The little girl was the result of experiments conducted by scientists at the expense of countless lives. It was the right thing to destroy her, and incur the wrath of those mad scientists.

If he destroyed her now, right here, right now, his mission would be fulfilled and he could escape anywhere, saving his own life.

Yes, it was the right thing to do. But he couldn't do it.

The man stopped in his tracks, raised his gun, carried the little girl, and started walking the other way.

"Hey, what are you doing!" Shouted one of his comrades.

"I can't do this."

"What do you mean?! After all our efforts, are you planning to betray us?!"

"I didn't mean to betray you. I just did what I wanted to do."

"Damn it! That's the same as betraying us!"

"If I become a traitor by doing this, then I will." A bitter smile spread across his face.

His comrades' faces were filled with anger. The shots that should have been aimed at the special forces members were now aimed at him.

"You'll die along with that damned robot!!"

The man ran, jumping from one building to another. Avoiding fire from both sides, he seemed a little overwhelmed. With the help of the little girl's calculations, they were able to evade it.

After a long escape, the man and the little girl had disappeared from the city. Snow began to fall in the cold night. They walked along the deserted streets.

"Father, is it okay?"

"Why?"

"You betrayed them, violated your mission, and saved me instead."

"It's okay. There's nothing to worry about."

As dawn approached, they arrived at an empty building. It appeared to have been abandoned for a long time, and it was also very far from the city. They rested there until night fell again. Then they moved on.

Four days passed, and they arrived back at their previous home. The snow was falling harder, but fortunately, they arrived before the blizzard hit.

Surveying the house, the man sighed. Fortunately, there were no signs of being bugged. One of his cars was still there.

The man packed up his belongings and headed back to another location. After three days, they arrived at a small house on the outskirts of the village. The house was also one of his hideouts.

In a room at Valley Science Technology,

"Sir, the device to disable the Absolute Childe subject is ready for use."

"Not only can it disable the subject, but it can also disrupt the subject's performance, and the master's ownership can also be transferred."

"Excellent. Since recreating it would be very expensive and time-consuming, you guys did a great job building this device." Said the head of Valley Science Technology.

"What about their locations?"

"After capturing one of their members, we discovered several of their hideouts. We are currently investigating them."

"Do it as quickly as possible."

"Understood."

A week later, the two of them were carrying on with their activities as usual. However, the man remained vigilant and prepared everything they needed in case they needed to escape again.

That cold night, someone was watching their house from a gap in the distant forest.

["Reporting. The target's location has been confirmed."]

["According to plan. Surprise them with a shot and we will seal off their escape route."]

["Understood."]

The man monitoring aimed his aim at the window of their house. The trigger of the long-barreled rifle was pulled.

Seeing the glass shattered by the shot, the man immediately sprang into action and left with the little girl. Carrying all the necessary equipment, he started his off-road vehicle and sped off at high speed.

["Reporting. The target has moved."]

Hearing the report, the deployed special forces immediately took their positions.

["Target sighted. Requesting permission to fire."]

["Permission granted."]

Immediately, the trigger of the high-tech long-barreled rifle was pulled. The bullet hit the rear tire of the car and exploded. The explosion was powerful enough to cause the car to roll over.

Just as they were about to enter,

"Father, something's interfering with my system." The little girl said.

[Location tracking failed.]

[Data identification failed.]

[Interference detected.]

[Source of interference unknown.]

The little girl received several notifications.

The man paused, thinking for a moment.

"Maybe they've created a device that can interfere with your system's performance."

"No information about that?"

The little girl shook her head.

"No, Father. No related data found."

Halfway through the journey, just as the bullets were fired,

"Father! There's a bullet coming this way!"

The little girl realized it too late, and the car had already flipped over.

Although his head had been hit, the man managed to maintain consciousness. It wasn't his first car accident. He'd been through worse.

"Are you hurt, Father?"

"It's okay. We have to get out of here quickly."

Despite the blood pouring from his head, the man stood up. They had only taken a few steps away from the overturned car when another shot fired at them.

Realizing this, the man quickly shielded the little girl and dodged. The ground exploded from the gunfire, and blood covered the snow where they fell.

"Father!" The little girl screamed.

The man clutched his shoulder, which had been injured by the blast.

"Sorry, Father, I couldn't detect any attacks."

"It's okay."

As the man struggled to get up, a voice rang out from not too far away.

"Surrender and hand over 'Twelve' if you still want to live." It was the voice of the head of Valley Science Technology.

"Hah, there's no way you'd want to let me live. Especially with the guns your guards are pointing at me." The man said with a bitter smile as he watched the two men aim their guns at him.

"Don't hurt my father!"

The little girl, who had been silent the entire time, stretched out her arms to protect him.

The laboratory director was slightly shocked.

"She's already developed like this." He muttered.

The little girl looked at the two guns pointed at the man.

[Weapon identification successful.]

[Weapon access successful.]

[Weapon disarming successful.]

The blue light on the guns went out. The two men behind the director were shocked.

"Sir, our weapons aren't working." They tried to pull the triggers, but nothing happened.

"It seems your system still works at close range." The director said.

"You know who I am, right? I created you. And I'm your supposed father." The director said.

"Yes, I know. And you also designed my system this way. And you're not my Father."

"Yes, you're right. Therefore, I will take what is due." The director took out a mobile device.

He pressed something on the screen.

[Signal not found.]

[Loading failed.]

[System being hacked.]

[Terminating interference.]

[Failed.]

[Reloading.]

[Failed.]

[Data analysis.]

[Failed.]

[System unable to receive command.]

[Unable to maintain system performance.]

[Unable to respond.]

[Error.]

Notifications popped up for the little girl. There was no response. She simply stood there, stiff, looking completely robot-like.

"What did you do to her?" The man shouted.

"Since she can't be deactivated, this is the only thing we can do."

"It's time she returned to her rightful owner." The director said arrogantly.

He began fiddling with the device he was carrying.

Anger filled his eyes.

"Don't treat her like an object!"

"Isn't she just an object? Just more advanced?"

The man quickly pulled out his concealed rifle and aimed it at the director. Without warning, he fired.

Unfortunately, his bodyguard shielded him with a shield.

"You're doing it for nothing." After he finished fiddling with the device, a notification sounded.

[Resetting ownership.]

[Accepted.]

[Please enter your ID.]

"It's over now. There's no point in keeping you alive."

With a gesture, the distant gunman immediately pulled the trigger and aimed his shot at the man.

A loud bang rang out.
