ISOBEL
I wasn't surprised when I woke up to see that the room was empty. I really hadn't expected him to come back last night, but a small part of me still couldn't help but wonder if he would. It was stupid of me and I should have known better. Mason did whatever he wanted, and yesterday, he made it clear to me that I wasn't something or that he wanted.
I brushed off the thoughts and sat up, then I stretched my muscles because for some reason, it felt sore. I had been restless through the night and my mind refused to stop thinking about Mason and his unusual behavior but now, there was no use thinking about him now because I had more important things to focus on. If he wanted to push me aside, then I'd do the same to him.
I got out of bed and went straight to the bathroom and after I got dressed in the bathroom and sat back down on the bed. I wasn't in the mood to speak to anyone so I decided to stay back but just as I was beginning to relax, I heard a knock on the door.
I sighed and then opened it only to see a maid standing there and she slightly bowed her head in respect, but I still couldn't get used to it. "Alpha Mason asked me to tell you that it's time to leave. He's waiting downstairs."
I looked at her for a moment before I sighed. Of course, this was typical of Mason. He did things without explanations and just liked to order people around.
"Alright," I muttered and she turned around and left. Then I began packing the little stuff I came with into my duffel bag.
By the time I finished and went downstairs, I saw Mason standing with Alpha Francis near the entrance. They were talking, but when they saw me, they stopped talking.
Mason didn't even look at me and I tried my best to ignore the way I felt when I looked at him, and I decided that I could also ignore him too. If he wants to ignore me and act indifferent, I can also do the same. At this point, I had nothing else to lose.
"Isobel," Alpha Francis greeted me and he had his usual bright smile on his face.
I forced myself to smile back because that was the polite thing to do. "Good morning, Alpha."
Mason's expression remained blank like he wasn't affected by my friendliness with Alpha Francis. Had he really moved so fast? He already decided I wasn't worthy of him?
Good. That was exactly what I wanted. I remained calm, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't ignore the way my stomach felt uneasy.
"Let's go," Mason finally said in a flat tone.
I nodded and followed him outside, but then, he didn't something unexpected. Mason didn't leave with me. Instead, he opened the car door, and gestured for me to get in.
At first, I was confused, and I hesitated for a moment before I stepped inside. He leaned against the door, and his face was as blank as usual as he spoke to the driver. "Take her back to the pack."
I blinked in surprise and without thinking, I asked, "Are you not coming?"
He finally turned to look at me for the first time that day, but his face was still blank so I couldn't tell exactly what was going through his mind. "I have some duties to attend to." His voice was flat and emotionless, like my question irritated him and inconvenienced him so much that he was only answering me out of formalities.
What duties did he have to attend to? Or was he just staying behind so he could be with that blonde woman?
I wanted to ask him. I wanted to force him to give me an answer but I bit my tongue to stop myself and nodded instead.
He shut the door, and the driver started the car and drove off, leaving Mason behind without another word. I looked out of the window, as I was lost in thoughts. It was fine. This was fine. I didn't care about him and this was for the best.
But the more I sat there, the more frustrated I felt. Why didn't he just say he was staying behind for her? Why did he act like he cared about my feelings and didn't want to hurt me?
I took a deep breath and forced myself to focus on the journey ahead. I wasn't going to waste any more energy thinking about him.
The drive back to the pack was longer than usual, and by the time we reached, I was tired and before I could even get out of the car, Quinn was already waiting for me, and instead of having a smile on her face, her arms were crossed and she had a frown on her face.
She didn't greet me, nor did she ask how I was doing. The first thing out of her mouth was, "Where's Alpha Mason?"
I looked at her in shock as I was caught off guard. "What?"
"Where is he?" She looked behind me like he'd mysteriously appear. "Why didn't he come back with you? What did you do with him?"
I blinked, still surprised. "What did I do with him?" I repeated her question, as I still didn't know what to say to her.
I couldn't understand why she was so concerned about Mason when I was her friend and not him!
I narrowed my eyes on her. "Why are you so worried about Mason?"
Quinn paused and she slightly parted her lips before she composed herself. "I'm not." She laughed and waved her hand dismissively, and I couldn't help but feel like her laugh was forced. "Don't mind me, I'm just happy you're free from him, at least for now."
I wasn't sure if I believed her, but I was too tired to think about it. She quickly took me inside, but she kept asking a lot of questions about the trip. I shook my head. "I'll tell you everything later. I just need to rest, I'm very tired."
Quinn didn't look happy about that, but I ignored it because I had enough to think about already.
