The small, skinny vagrant was surprised that the man in front of him actually responded, and instantly became enthusiastic. He started rambling nonstop.
"You know, they pay in cash." As he spoke, he pulled a bottle filled with dark-red liquid from the cloth pouch at his waist.
"No matter how many times you sell, they'll take it—as long as you're willing. And the price isn't lower than what you get on the street. They'll even buy it bottled."
The tall man twitched at the corner of his eye, the corner of his mouth pulling into a mocking arc. He didn't speak—he merely nodded at the skinny vagrant, signaling him to continue.
"No one knows what those people are trying to do, but they seem to take this really seriously. Some Manhattan gangs tried to make a profit off the whole deal, but word is they fought each other a few times and all got wiped out. The old folks say it was the people backing this group who did it."
"And I heard they're not buying blood for medical stuff—it's supposed to be for some evil demonic ritual. Hell knows what's true. Anyway, as long as they pay, who cares."
The skinny one wasn't so much talking as he was complaining. But he had a good listener—the tall man never interrupted, only nodding from time to time to show he was listening. This gave the vagrant a new impression of his tall companion—at the very least, he seemed like a decent guy.
Just as the vagrant was still going on, seriously comparing which restaurant dumpsters in the neighborhood produced better-tasting scraps, a woman in a suit walked over. She checked the document in her hand, then spoke to the tall vagrant.
"Chad Noma? It's your turn. Come with me."The tall vagrant stood up and coughed, gesturing to the woman in the suit. He waved goodbye to the skinny man while following the suited woman deeper into the tunnel. The skinny one waved back, still muttering things no one understood—or wanted to.
The two walked through the dark tunnel. This was already deep within the abandoned subway system, now converted into some unknown facility. Cameras and checkpoints were everywhere—clearly not a charity. The tall vagrant coughed, answering the woman's questions as they walked.
"In the past year, any tattoos or other procedures that pierce the skin?"
"No."
The woman tapped her chin with her pen.
"And what about that scar on your jaw?"
Chad Noma, who had been glancing around curiously, instinctively covered his jaw upon hearing the question. After a moment, he replied.
"Accident when I was a kid."He coughed twice afterward, obviously unwilling to explain further. The two of them went farther in, long past any sign of other people. Clearly by design. The woman continued her work.
"You say you have no close relatives?"
In stiff words, Chad replied, "At least none I'm in contact with."
The woman gave a faint, almost imperceptible smile.
"So if there's an emergency, there's no one to notify?"
"Not a single person."
Chad's gaze fixed on a group of cleaners who were vigorously scrubbing a room's floor—covered with sticky liquid.
"No family?" the woman continued, seemingly unconcerned that he had noticed.
Chad, however, was getting impatient with the topic.
"I told you already—no! Why are you asking so much? You telling me I can't donate blood?"
The woman didn't intend to dwell on it either. She led him toward a guarded door while flipping through her form.
"I'm not sure. Your blood test results show something very abnormal."
"What?"Chad looked surprised, covering his mouth as he coughed. "How abnormal?"
The woman led him through the door, entering something like a keypad device and explaining as she did.
"Let me put it simply—your blood contains a rare phenotype we've never seen before."
At that moment, the door slammed shut behind them. Chad turned in alarm.
"What? What are you talking about?"
Before he could finish, a security guard grabbed him from behind. The force was far from human, overpowering him and forcing him toward something that looked like an operating table.
"Who are you people?" he asked, voice trembling with fear.
"Please sit down."The woman in the suit was completely unmoved. She watched as the guard and a butcher-like man pinned Chad onto the table, studying him with the cold gaze one would use on livestock.
Chad looked around anxiously. "What is this?"
"It's a mixed situation, Chad," the butcher-like man said with a grin, revealing sharp canine teeth and pitch-dark pupils.
He examined Chad, then exchanged a strange smile with the woman in the suit.
"For us, it's good news…"
"But for you…"He picked up something like a glove from beside him and slipped it on. The fingertip ended in a huge needle—terrifying just to look at.
"…it's bad news."
Chad trembled, uttering a sound that at first seemed like whimpering and pleading. But as the sound grew louder, it became clear it was something else entirely—an unstoppable laugh, the laugh of someone who had pulled off a successful prank.
Chad burst into laughter. Beneath his stretched grin, sharper teeth gleamed, and the scar on his jaw twitched—and began to split.
The supposed hunter stared at Chad in bewilderment as the madness grew in the vagrant's eyes. Their playful smiles froze, turning blank and confused. They hadn't yet realized that Chad was changing—they only wondered whether he'd been frightened insane.
Chad was not a good person—and he certainly wasn't going to explain anything to them. He shot to his feet, grabbed the woman's neck, and sank his teeth into her throat. His bite was so powerful that her arterial blood erupted like a fountain, painting the wall behind her in an instant.
The remaining two froze in terror. The security guard desperately drew his pistol and emptied it into Chad's back while he fed. The bullets dug into his flesh, but aside from interrupting his meal, they had no effect. Chad dropped his current "food" and walked toward the guard instead.
"What do you want, you monster? Stay away from me!"His crumbling sanity drove him to charge when cornered, but human strength offered no safety—his opponent was even less human than he was. Chad grabbed the man's head with one hand, and with a squeeze of his fingers, the sound of shattering bone scraped through the air.
The guard instantly went limp, as boneless as a snake. Yet his strong vitality kept him from dying outright—he only convulsed, letting out unconscious groans.
Chad felt nothing at the scene. He glanced at the man running toward the door and swung his arm, slamming the limp body against the wall. A wet sound followed—like a giant tomato thrown to the floor. Dark-red pulp splattered across the decayed wall in grotesque patterns.
Meanwhile, the last survivor had reached the door. It was locked tight. To escape, he needed to enter the code that hid their crimes behind this sealed gate. If he could get through, he could call the guards and trap the monster inside.
But he couldn't open it.His hands—usually capable of handling delicate surgical tools—shook uncontrollably. His trembling fingers kept hitting the wrong buttons. As he tried again, it was already too late.
Chad seized him by the throat and lifted him off the ground. Instead of feeding, Chad looked around the room—then turned to the surveillance camera in the corner, baring fangs still dripping with scarlet blood.
"Bunch of vampires."In the vampires' own language, he spoke his mind clearly."I hate vampires the most."
Then he looked at the prey in his hand and slowly opened his mouth. As his jaws parted, the scar on his chin split open too—like a second mouth.
"What the hell is that thing supposed to be?"A fierce-looking, thick-set bald man stared at the screen, voicing his confusion as Chad transformed in the last frame.
By now, a full night had passed since the attack. When the subway security realized something was wrong, Chad had already escaped the tunnels without a trace. Only the surveillance footage remained—with clear images of the killer. When the subway supervisors reported the footage to their hidden masters—the vampires who bought blood under the flimsy guise of a blood bank—their reaction was surprisingly extreme.
The footage was escalated level by level until it reached the leader of the vampire ruling party in New York: Grand Duke Eridamas Kinos. After watching the footage, the Grand Duke gathered his elite vampire warriors and began devising a major plan.
"Your Grace, don't tell me you summoned me just to deal with this thing?"The bald man spat on the floor, clearly unimpressed by Chad's abnormal transformation.
"Mind your attitude, Reinhardt!"A courteous middle-aged Black man beside him frowned sharply, scolding the bald man. "You are standing before the Supreme Grand Duke. Show respect."
The Grand Duke, seated on his high chair with one hand supporting his head, raised his hand slightly, cutting off the rebuke.
"Enough, Asa. No need to quarrel. Our priority is eliminating this creature threatening the survival of our kind."
Supported by a woman beside him, the Grand Duke rose. That woman was none other than Nyssa, who had once crossed paths with Zhou Yi. Here, she held a distinguished status—the future Vampire Grand Duchess, only daughter of the current Grand Duke, heir to the ruling party. With the beauty of a vampire standing beside him, the Grand Duke's true appearance looked all the more wretched by comparison.
