Chapter 887 - The World Tree's Question

The Empire was quiet.

A gentle breeze moved through the endless branches of the World Trees.

Children laughed in the distance.

The daughters explored the gardens.

Wukong slept upside down on a branch.

For once.

Nothing unusual was happening.

Kael Veyris sat beneath the oldest World Tree.

The First Tree.

The Ancient Tree.

A being that had witnessed countless ages of existence.

For a long time.

Neither spoke.

Then the World Tree finally broke the silence.

"Kael."

Kael looked up.

"Yes?"

The massive tree's leaves shimmered softly.

"I have a question."

Kael nodded.

"Ask."

The tree was silent for several moments.

As though choosing its words carefully.

Finally.

It spoke.

"You created frameworks."

"You created narratives."

"You created laws."

"You created reality."

"You created time."

"You created life."

"You created death."

"You created countless forms of existence."

The tree paused.

"Why?"

Kael blinked.

"Why what?"

The tree rustled its branches.

"Why create anything at all?"

Silence filled the garden.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

The question was simple.

Yet deeper than most beings could understand.

Kael looked toward the distant horizon.

Then answered.

"Because I wanted to."

The World Tree sighed.

"I should have expected that answer."

Wukong, who had secretly been listening nearby, burst out laughing.

"That's the most Kael answer possible."

The World Tree continued.

"Most creators seek purpose."

"Most gods seek worship."

"Most rulers seek control."

"You seek none of those things."

Kael nodded.

"Correct."

The tree thought for a moment.

"Then what do you seek?"

Kael watched the daughters playing nearby.

Ignisia was arguing with Lyra.

Marigold was laughing.

Genesisra was reading.

Nyx was quietly observing the stars.

Lilith was helping younger children.

The Empire was alive.

Happy.

Peaceful.

Kael smiled.

"I like seeing them smile."

The World Tree fell silent.

The answer surprised it.

Not because it was complicated.

Because it was simple.

"You possess power beyond everything I can comprehend."

The tree said.

"You could do anything."

Kael shrugged.

"Probably."

"And yet you spend your time gardening."

"Yes."

"You drink tea."

"Yes."

"You walk through the Empire."

"Yes."

"You listen to your wives talk."

"Sometimes."

The tree laughed.

Even Kael smiled.

The World Tree lowered one of its great branches.

"Then I have another question."

Kael sighed dramatically.

"That is how questions work."

The tree ignored him.

"Are you lonely?"

The garden became quiet.

Even Wukong stopped laughing.

The question lingered.

The World Tree wasn't asking about power.

Or creation.

Or existence.

It was asking about Kael himself.

Kael looked around.

At the Empire.

At the World Trees.

At his daughters.

At his wives.

At his friends.

At Wukong hanging upside down from a branch.

At Ignisia currently threatening someone over a game.

At Genesisra pretending not to laugh.

At Nyx quietly smiling.

At Lilith helping others.

At everyone.

Then Kael answered.

"No."

The World Tree felt the truth behind the answer.

Not a single lie.

Not a single hesitation.

"Good."

The tree said.

Kael tilted his head.

"Good?"

The World Tree's leaves glowed warmly.

"For all your power."

"For all your greatness."

"For everything you are."

The tree paused.

"I am glad you have a family."

For the first time in a long while.

Kael said nothing.

The World Tree continued.

"Because origins are important."

"But so are the people who stand beside them."

The ancient tree's branches swayed gently.

"And I think they are your greatest creation."

Kael looked toward his family again.

Then smiled.

A genuine smile.

"Yeah."

The World Tree smiled as well.

And beneath the glowing branches of the ancient trees.

The Origin of Everything sat quietly with an old friend.

Simply enjoying the peace.
