Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 29: SENIOR YEAR BEGINS

CHAPTER 29: SENIOR YEAR BEGINS

POV: Ivyn Mikaelson

September arrives with West Valley High buzzing about summer's developments.

Everyone knows about Kreese's expulsion. The Cobra Kai/Miyagi-Do rivalry. The fragile peace maintained only by mutual exhaustion.

Senior year begins with segregated lunch tables. Hostile stares. Administration nervously monitoring for violence.

Metal detectors at entrances. Security guards in hallways. The school feels less like education and more like prison.

Lunch period becomes theater of cold war.

Cobra Kai at one table cluster. Miyagi-Do at another. Neutrals carefully navigating between like diplomats in hostile territory.

I sit with Sam intentionally at a neutral table. Trying to model coexistence. Proving it's possible.

Miguel approaches with Tory. Four-person dynamic that feels like defusing a bomb.

"Mind if we join?"

Sam tenses but nods. "Sure."

They sit. Conversation stilted. Loaded with subtext. Every word a minefield.

"How was your summer?" Sam asks. Polite. Careful.

"Productive," Miguel says. "Training mostly."

"Same," I add.

Tory picks at her food. Eyes calculating. "Must be nice having rich daddy to bail you out of every problem."

Sam's spine straightens. Response measured but firm. "Must be exhausting assuming everyone's life is easier than yours."

The tension spikes. Visible. Palpable.

"Can we just eat lunch without dojo politics?" I intervene. Keeping voice light.

Tory's smile is sharp. Predatory. "Sure. As long as princess remembers not everyone gets what they want handed to them."

Sam opens her mouth. I touch her hand. Gentle pressure. "Don't engage. Not worth it."

She closes her mouth. Nods.

The rest of lunch passes in uncomfortable silence.

[SOCIAL TENSION: HIGH]

[TORY-SAM CONFLICT: 65/100]

[WARNING: Escalation probable]

After lunch, Yasmine approaches. Nervous. Shaking slightly.

"Sam, can I talk to you? Privately?"

Sam looks at me. I nod. "I'll be right here."

They step aside. Yasmine talking quickly. Urgently. Sam's face cycles through surprise and anger.

When they return, Sam's jaw is tight. "Hawk and some Cobra Kai students have been harassing Yasmine. Revenge for what she did to Aisha freshman year."

"What kind of harassment?"

"Tripping in hallways. Comments. Yesterday someone keyed her car."

Yasmine's voice is small. "I was awful to Aisha. I know that. I deserved some payback. But this is getting scary."

"Revenge spiraling into cruelty. Exactly what Kreese wanted. What he taught."

"I'll talk to Hawk. This stops."

Find him after school. Locker area. Packing gym bag.

"We need to talk. About Yasmine."

His face hardens. "What about her?"

"The harassment stops. Now."

"She made Aisha's life hell. Now she knows how it feels."

"And when does it end? When you become worse than she ever was?"

Hawk zips his bag. Angry. Defensive. "She deserves it."

"Maybe. But you don't deserve to become a bully. Remember why you joined Cobra Kai? To stop being a victim. Not to create new ones."

He's silent. Processing. The Eli underneath the mohawk surfacing briefly.

"Fine. I'll back off. But she's lucky you're asking."

"I'm not asking. I'm telling you as someone who cares about who you become."

He leaves. Not quite agreement. But not refusal either.

[HAWK: Reconsidering actions]

[YASMINE: Protected (temporarily)]

After school, I'm at my locker when raised voices draw attention.

Tory cornering Sam near the trophy case.

"Stay away from Miguel. He's moved on, and you need to respect that."

Sam's confusion genuine. "I'm not interested in Miguel. I'm with Ivyn."

Tory's laugh is bitter. Sharp. "Sure. But you're the type who likes attention from every guy. Rich, pretty, never been told no. Some of us actually have to fight for what we want."

I approach quickly. Positioning myself in sight but not intervening yet.

Sam attempts empathy. "I'm not your enemy, Tory. Whatever you think about me—"

"I think you're spoiled. Privileged. And you've never faced real consequences. That's what I think."

Tory walks away. Leaving Sam shaken. Pale.

I take her hand. "You okay?"

"Why does she hate me? I've never done anything to her."

"Because you represent everything she doesn't have. It's not rational. Pain rarely is."

[TORY-SAM CONFLICT: 70/100]

[APPROACHING CRISIS LEVEL]

[WARNING: Violence probability increasing]

That night, training at the dojo provides no escape. The tension from school bleeding into every interaction.

Students are on edge. Jumpy. Aggressive in sparring.

Johnny notices. "Everyone cool it. Save the intensity for actual opponents."

But the damage is done. The dojo war has infected everything.

After class, I review the day. First week of senior year. Already feels like month.

[MAJOR VIOLENT INCIDENT PROBABILITY: 75% within 8 weeks]

I text Sam. "You okay?"

"Shaken but fine. Thank you for being there."

"Always."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

The exchange feels fragile. Precious. Like something that could shatter at any moment.

Because in eight weeks or less, something catastrophic will happen.

And I'm running out of ways to prevent it.
