Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Marvis's POV

"I don't have the luxury of saying no to work", she finally said "And I have been around enough chaos to know how to keep my mouth shut".

I leaned back, watching her with new interest. So she'd been through something. I didn't ask what. I didn't need to.

"Read the file. Think it through", I said. "You come back tomorrow and you'll be stepping into something that has no exit"

She turned back just as her hand touched the door.

"Can I come tomorrow evening instead?" she asked, her soft voice soft, but not uncertain. I narrowed my eyes slightly. Most people would've nodded, left and done as told.

Not her. She was already testing boundaries. Curious.

I leaned back in my chair, folding my hands calmly on the desk.

"May I know the reason for the late hour?" My voice was even but I watched her closely.

I didn't ask for the sake of formality. I asked because everything mattered. Timing. Tone. Excuses. Motive.

How she answered this would tell exactly what kind of woman she was, and whether or not she'd last more than one day in the world.
