Anderson is sleeping when I get back to the car. At least, I think he is.
Just looking at him makes me feel guilty. I said I would be ten minutes. I was gone for almost an hour. I lift my hand to tap on the window, but then his eyes open. He stretches his arms high and lets out a big yawn.
"It is a little creepy, you know. Standing there watching a guy sleep."
My face gets hot. "I was not watching you, Anderson."
A beep from the car tells me he unlocked the door. I hurry around to the other side and get in. Quiet fills the space between us, the same comfortable quiet we know so well. I play with the edge of my shorts, trying to find the right words to say I am sorry. Jade and I did not do much talking. By the time I left, she was already asleep. My fingers close around the seatbelt and I buckle it.
Anderson is the one who speaks first. "Well, that took a while. How did it go? Was it bad? Horrible? The worst?"
