Milo and Lyla had been putting on their theatrical performance for quite a while now, but the conference room remained eerily quiet. Nobody was buying their act.
Even Harriet, whose hand Lyla clutched in what she probably thought looked caring, just sat there letting it happen. Her head stayed down, not uttering a single word.
It wasn't like Harriet was trying to be rude - Lyla's over-the-top energy had her completely overwhelmed, and she couldn't figure out how to escape that death grip.
The school administrators, Orion included, looked like they wanted to jump in and say something. But the moment Milo and Lyla walked through that door, they'd made a beeline straight for Harold without so much as acknowledging anyone else existed.
