Chapter 6 - A Desperate Mother and Daughter, a Ray of Hope

"See you tomorrow, Brother Fang Xun!"

Ningguang packed up the lunchbox and waved goodbye to Fang Xun,

then disappeared at the end of the road.

Fang Xun was a little surprised by Ningguang's farewell,

because he had thought Ningguang would immediately open the lunchbox and start eating.

After all, Ningguang's stomach had been rumbling with hunger while the fish was grilling.

Fang Xun still remembered the little girl's shy, blushing face.

However, even though she was so hungry…

Seeing the food, she didn't immediately start eating. Instead, she chose to take it home.

Fang Xun quickly understood Ningguang's actions.

Ningguang was probably considering that the meal was very rich, so she wanted to take it back to share with her family.

This made Fang Xun sigh inwardly. This little girl was so sensible it was heartbreaking.

If Fang Xun had helped Ningguang before because he wanted to gain a connection and potentially receive help from a wealthy woman in the future,

now, he wanted to help Ningguang more from the bottom of his heart.

Because this little girl's life was really difficult.

Watching Ningguang's disappearing back, Fang Xun continued eating the grilled fish, then said, "I hope that money can alleviate some of her pressure."

Yes,

In the lunch box he gave to Ningguang, Fang Xun secretly put a bag of Mora.

The amount of Mora wasn't much, only fifty thousand.

Of course, that money wasn't directly given by Fang Xun, but lent to Ningguang.

She could pay it back when she had money in the future.

·······

As for Ningguang.

Little Ningguang's speed of going home tonight was much faster than usual,

Because today, she was carrying two boxes of food from Wanmin Restaurant, intending to share them with her mother.

Truth be told, the portions from Wanmin Restaurant were really generous!

All the way, little Ningguang felt the weight in her arms, making it a bit difficult to hold.

As a result, beads of sweat covered her fair, plump forehead, and her beautiful hair was also damp with sweat.

Although she was tired and sweating, Ningguang had a happy smile on her face.

Because her mother had always wanted to eat food from Wanmin Restaurant, but due to their less-than-wealthy family, she hadn't said anything.

Today, she could finally fulfill her mother's wish.

Ningguang's home was a wooden house.

It wasn't very big.

There was only a simple kitchen and one bedroom.

It looked rather crude and was in disrepair, with some of the wood showing signs of rot.

If you sniffed carefully, there was a faint smell of dampness and mildew in the air.

This was a place that even the Treasure Hoarders would shake their heads at, too lazy to bother with.

But for Ningguang, this was her safe haven.

Because her gentle and kind mother was here, which allowed Ningguang to feel very secure.

"Mom, I'm back!"

"Guess what I brought back with me today?"

Ningguang pushed open the door as usual, speaking happily towards the room.

Generally, her mother would come out of the room after hearing Ningguang's voice.

However, today her mother was a bit off, and no sound came from the room.

Ningguang had a bad feeling. She immediately ran into the room,

and then, she saw her mother lying on the floor, completely unconscious.

"Mom, what happened to you? Don't scare me!"

Ningguang tried to wake her mother, but it was no use.

Ningguang remembered that there was an Old Doctor in their village, so she immediately went to fetch him.

Knowing that Ningguang's family was struggling, the Old Doctor immediately followed her back home after hearing her explanation.

He examined Ningguang's mother for a moment and then said, "Little Ningguang, your mother has fainted from overwork."

"I will prepare a prescription for you later. You should get the medicine according to the prescription and have your mother take it for a week."

The Old Doctor wrote down the prescription with a pen and paper as he spoke.

"Thank you, Doctor, thank you, Doctor." Ningguang quickly thanked him and wanted to offer Mora as a consultation fee.

However, the Old Doctor waved his hand and didn't accept the fee.

"Little girl, we're all from the same village, so don't worry about the money."

"Besides, everyone knows your family's situation isn't easy."

"And the medicine for your mother will cost at least fifty thousand Mora. You should save your money and find a way to get the Mora."

"Her condition can't be delayed; it will only get worse. She needs to take the medicine as soon as possible, understand?"

After the Old Doctor finished his instructions, he sighed helplessly and left.

His sigh also expressed the helplessness and sorrow for Ningguang's family.

For a poor family like hers, finding fifty thousand Mora was no easy feat.

Hearing this, Ningguang's mind went blank.

His mother's illness couldn't be delayed any longer; she needed treatment soon.

However, the cost was fifty thousand Mora...

This sum was enough to crush a poor family like theirs.

Ningguang usually earned a thousand Mora a day.

That was only when business was good.

Sometimes, she made nothing at all.

Even if business was good every day, allowing her to earn a thousand Mora daily,

she would still need to save for fifty days without eating or drinking to gather enough money for the medicine.

Ningguang didn't mind working even harder to earn money.

But could her mother wait until then?

Borrow money from someone?

But who would lend it to her?

And who could she even ask?

Brother Fang Xun?

No, she had only just met him. How could she ask to borrow money?

Moreover, it was five thousand Mora.

Ningguang felt a sense of helplessness and despair.

At this moment, Ningguang's mother also regained consciousness.

Ningguang, not bothering to think about anything else, immediately stepped forward and asked, "Mom, how are you feeling?"

Ningguang's mother didn't answer, her eyes were moist, and she gently shook her head, "Child, I'm sorry..."

Tears silently streamed down her mother's cheeks; she had heard what the Old Doctor had just said.

"This illness, we won't treat it, and we can't afford to."

"It can be treated, it definitely can be treated." Seeing her mother cry, Ningguang also started to cry.

"Mom, don't cry, we'll definitely think of a way!"

Ningguang wanted to comfort her mother.

She would never abandon her mother, no matter what.

Ningguang's mother reached out and gently stroked Ningguang's tender face, wiping away her tears.

At the same time, she forced a smile, "I'm crying, just because I feel regretful..."

"That I won't be able to see my little Ningguang grow up."

"I'm sorry, Mom hasn't taken good care of you. You've suffered with me since you were little."

"If I'm gone, bury me with your father..."

Ningguang's mother's tone was as if she were making her final arrangements.

Because she knew she didn't have much time left.

However, Ningguang didn't wait for her mother to finish speaking, and interrupted.

"I won't help you, don't even think about leaving me!"

"There's a way, there definitely will be a way!"

As Ningguang spoke, she got up to fetch the food Fang Xun had given them.

"Mom, don't worry, eat first."

"I have to eat too, so I'll have the strength to go out and figure out how to make money later!"

Ningguang was also determined to cure her mother's illness.

If time wasn't enough, then she'd work day and night.

It would definitely be enough!

Seeing Ningguang's stubbornness, her mother had no choice but to sigh.

She knew her daughter's personality; once she decided to do something, she wouldn't compromise easily.

Oh well, let her do as she pleased.

Ningguang was still young, and many things weren't as simple as she imagined...

At this moment, Ningguang's mother saw the Wanmin Restaurant's packaging, and was stunned at first, then surprised.

"Girl, you actually bought food from Wanmin Restaurant?"

Ningguang scratched her head and explained, "I met a big brother today named Fang Xun, and he was really, really nice to me."

"These two meals were what he traded with me for."

Ningguang said as she opened the packaging.

Then, she saw a heavy bag.

She opened it and found Mora inside!

Ningguang counted them. It was exactly fifty thousand Mora!
