Aria woke early the next morning. Soft sunlight was already slipping through the curtains, painting golden stripes across her bedroom floor. She sat on the edge of her bed for a long minute, just staring at the blanket she draped over her mirror.
Then something inside her shifted. She stood up slowly and walked to the dresser. Her hand reached out and pulled the blanket off completely.
She looked at her reflection carefully, almost holding her breath.
Just her. Only her. Green eyes with those silver flecks she inherited. No shadow lurking behind her. No cold, cruel smile staring back. Just Aria.
She let out a long, shaky breath. Relief washed over her like cool water.
Then she turned and went downstairs, feeling lighter than she had in weeks.
Cassidy was already at the stove in the kitchen, making oatmeal with honey the way Aria liked it. She turned around when she heard Aria's footsteps and smiled warmly.
"Morning, love."
Aria gave a small smile back. "Morning, Mum."
