"Take care of yourself, sweetheart," Chloe murmured, her warm hand squeezing my shoulder as we stood outside her cozy bookstore.
I managed a genuine smile, feeling lighter than I had in weeks. The weight that had been crushing my chest seemed to have lifted, if only temporarily. This visit had been exactly what I needed. I promised myself I wouldn't wait so long before coming back.
"Thank you for everything, Chloe," I said, meaning every word as we embraced briefly. She disappeared back into her sanctuary of books, and I caught sight of her young apprentice through the window. The girl beamed and waved enthusiastically from behind the register, and I found myself waving back with unexpected warmth.
