Her expression remained soft, almost maternal in its gentleness. "The King and Queen have extended an invitation for you to return to the palace. They would like you to stay for a while. They want their daughter home."


Home. The word hit me like a physical blow.


I stared at her, feeling my chest constrict with each passing second. "They want me back?" A harsh laugh escaped my throat. "After all this time?"


Aunt Naia's gentle smile wavered. "Jasmine, please-"


"It has been years, Aunt Naia!" My voice rose as I backed away from her. "Where was this invitation when I was a child crying myself to sleep every night? Where were they when I was on my knees begging the Moon Goddess to tell me why my own parents abandoned me? But suddenly, out of nowhere, they remember they have a daughter?"
