Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Heart of the Starfall

The Aetherial Eclipse descended in a controlled glide over the scarred heart of the Starfall Site. Joshua stepped onto the crystalline ground with the measured grace of a young Earl — back straight, movements precise, expression calm and regal. In public or among strangers, he was the picture of refined nobility: every word chosen with care, every action deliberate, carrying the quiet authority of one who understood the weight of his title. A faint spark of youth still lingered in his eyes, softening the regal bearing just enough to remind observers he was not yet fully hardened by the heavens.

But the moment the last automaton confirmed the perimeter was secure and no eyes watched, the mask slipped.

Joshua let out a long, satisfied breath and rolled his shoulders with a boyish grin that would have shocked the nobles back in Luminara Reach. "Finally. Alone at last."

He crouched beside the largest crater, running his fingers through the glowing ore fragments like a kid who had just found buried treasure. "Look at this beauty," he muttered, voice dropping into the playful, cunning tone his family knew so well. "Those smug bastards at the auction thought they were sending me to die. Instead, I might have just hit the jackpot."

Aether's neutral voice chimed in his mind.

Joshua's grin widened into something distinctly mischievous — the same sly spark that the twins had clearly inherited. "High-grade? Oh, I like the sound of that." He stood up, pacing with energetic steps that betrayed his youth. "If I play this right, we'll have enough physical shards to fund the entire family's path to the Divine Heavens and still have plenty left to buy half the Trade Association if we feel like it."

He activated the mid-grade combat automatons with a flick of his wrist, his tone shifting back to regal authority for their benefit. "Deploy defensive array. Begin preliminary mining at twenty percent capacity. Maintain strict rift monitoring. No transmissions unless critical."

The automatons moved with mechanical precision. "Orders received and logged, Lord Joshua."

The moment they turned away to execute his commands, Joshua's regal mask dropped again. He leaned against a glowing ore outcrop, arms crossed, a cunning glint in his eyes. "Perfect. Let them do the heavy lifting while I scout the best veins. If I can keep this site hidden for a few cycles, the digital balance from high-grade conversions alone will make those jealous nobles choke on their own envy."

He moved through the site with a boyish bounce in his step when no one was watching, kicking a small shard playfully into the air and catching it. Fire and Lightning stirred within him — the nurturing yet incinerating flame and the dominating, assertive lightning — both responding to his mood like eager companions. A small burst of warm flame danced across his palm, nurturing a nearby crystal formation before he let it flare into a brief, controlled scorch just for fun.

"Those five fools who ambushed me… seven hundred sixty million digital shards richer because of their greed," he chuckled to himself, the sound low and mischievous. "And they called me the arrogant one. If only they could see this place now."

He spent the next several hours mapping the richest veins with careful precision, switching seamlessly between his public regal demeanor when directing the automatons and his true self when alone — cunning, playful, and fiercely protective of the family waiting back home.

By the time the temporary base camp was established and the first batch of high-grade ore began extraction, Joshua allowed himself a moment of quiet satisfaction. He sat on the edge of the central crater, legs dangling like the youth he still was at heart, while his face settled back into the composed, refined expression the world expected.

"High-grade mine secured," he murmured, voice regal once more, though a hint of youthful excitement colored the edges. "Now… time to make sure no one followed me here. The real game begins when I return home."

The Starfall Site pulsed with untapped power beneath him. Joshua's eyes gleamed with cunning calculation.

He had every intention of turning this dangerous gamble into the greatest advantage his family had ever known.
