Chapter 17 - SHANGHAI 2020-17-Big client and generation gap

As the saying goes, a generation gap is like a mountain; each generation thinks differently. Those born in the 70s and 80s find it hard to understand the values and outlook on life of the 90s and even 00s generation. At night, the streets of Shanghai were constantly filled with the sound of ambulances. Here, I must express my immense gratitude to Shanghai's medical staff. They were risking their own lives to save others! Many doctors, running fevers of 38-39°C themselves, would rest a bit at the hospital and then continue their shifts. I think being a doctor is a sacred and great profession.

So there I was, trembling at home. My WeChat and phone kept ringing – my child's kindergarten teacher, neighbors, some end clients – all asking me for masks. Suddenly, a woman added me on WeChat, saying a mutual friend referred her, hearing I had masks. Judging from her WeChat profile picture and manner of speaking, she seemed to be in her twenties. This spicy girl nearly made me faint. She came straight to the point: "How many masks does your factory have?" I was a bit stunned and said, "A lot." She said, "I'll take them all." I thought she was crazy. But within two minutes, she sent me a screenshot of her account balance – it showed around 30 million yuan.

Out of curiosity, I asked the young lady, "What do you need so many masks for?" This girl, whether 90s or 00s, said bluntly, "To speculate!" She was sure the pandemic would surge again. I felt uncomfortable hearing this. Plus, our masks were already pre-ordered for other clients. So I said, "Sorry, I can't sell them to you. Many masks are on regular supply. Only a small quantity is available for you." Unexpectedly, this spicy girl replied with words I'll never forget: "If you don't sell to me, someone else will. Even if I don't speculate, plenty of others will!" Then she hung up.

This made me understand the mindset of the new generation: very direct, no regard for sentiment.
