For ordinary ninjas with no background or connections, their jonin instructor was practically their only path to advanced techniques and real advancement.
But for clan-born shinobi, a jonin leader was little more than a superior officer.
Clan students rarely expected their instructor to teach them anything crucial—after all, they already had family secret arts. What they cared about was simple:
The stronger the jonin, the safer the squad.
And Feiyu was certain the instructor assigned to their team wouldn't be some random nobody. The Third Hokage might be easygoing, but when it came to his son's safety, there was no way he'd be careless.
"Is this Team One?"
A calm voice drifted in from the doorway. The three turned to look and saw a young man in his twenties step inside—long dark hair, pale eyes, unmistakably a Hyūga.
"We're Team One! I'm Uchiha Feiyu. These two are Sarutobi Asuma and Yūhi Kurenai!"
Feiyu immediately straightened his posture, smiling brightly as he introduced them.
"Good. I'll be your jonin instructor. Hyūga Hizashi. From today on, you three are my students—and my subordinates."
Asuma and Kurenai exchanged stunned looks, glancing between the grinning Feiyu and the unreadable Hizashi.
What was this situation?
They actually assigned a Hyūga to teach an Uchiha?
The Uchiha and Hyūga were two of the most prestigious clans in Konoha—no, in the entire shinobi world. Both were famed for their dōjutsu. Expecting the two clans to get along harmoniously was like expecting oil and water to mix.
Historically, the Uchiha overshadowed the Hyūga. The Sharingan's combat potential far surpassed the Byakugan. Add the curse seal cage-bird system crippling the Hyūga's growth, and the gap only grew wider.
Combine Uchiha arrogance with Hyūga resentment, and the result was mutual disdain.
A Hyūga teaching an Uchiha? That had literally never happened.
And realistically, what could either side learn?
An Uchiha couldn't learn Gentle Fist.
A Hyūga wouldn't touch fire release or genjutsu.
Both clans had complete internal systems. Neither needed to cling to the other.
So the usual relationship was: ignore each other forever.
Asuma and Kurenai secretly worried that Feiyu would clash with their new teacher, but Feiyu instead looked absolutely delighted.
"Great! I can't believe my instructor is a Hyūga! This is amazing!"
That one sentence stunned both teammates—and even cracked Hizashi's stoic expression.
"…Although we're both dōjutsu clans, the Byakugan and Sharingan are completely different systems. I can't really guide an Uchiha's training."
"Doesn't matter! Having a Hyūga leading us means our survival rate just shot up!"
"The Hyūga have the highest survival rate in the entire shinobi world!"
Feiyu grinned.
He wasn't wrong.
The Byakugan wasn't the strongest bloodline in terms of sheer power, but when it came to staying alive, it was unparalleled—no ambushes, no hidden traps, 360° vision, and superb evasion.
Having a walking radar as your squad leader?
Feiyu couldn't ask for anything better.
Clan grudges? Politics? Pride?
None of that mattered compared to staying alive.
Hizashi's rank and position meant he wouldn't openly target Feiyu anyway. At worst, he'd be a bit distant. Compared to his own safety, that was nothing.
Hizashi felt something was… off about this boy.
Asuma voiced what everyone was thinking:
"Are you sure you're actually an Uchiha? You're strong, you've awakened the Sharingan, and yet you're terrified of dying!"
"Isn't being afraid of death normal? If it weren't for these stupid eyes, the Uchiha never would've dragged me into being a ninja in the first place!"
Feiyu rolled his eyes.
Hizashi coughed lightly, ending the conversation.
"All right, introductions. I'll go first."
"As I said, Hyūga Hizashi. Jonin. Specialties: Gentle Fist and Byakugan."
He gave a faint, self-mocking smile.
"Though I suppose you could tell that just by looking at me."
"…Aren't you going to tell us your dream?"
Asuma blurted out, earning a sharp glare from Kurenai.
A branch family member announcing his dream?
That was practically a joke.
Hizashi's bitter smile deepened.
"My dreams are better left unspoken. But you three can share yours."
"I'll go first! Sarutobi Asuma. I specialize in fire release and close combat. I don't really like or hate anything. My short-term goal is to surpass Feiyu, and long-term… surpass my father."
Hizashi nodded.
Second-generation pressure was common. The desire to step out of a famous parent's shadow was practically universal among clan heirs.
"I'm Yūhi Kurenai. I specialize in genjutsu. My dream is to become an outstanding kunoichi like Lady Tsunade!"
again, unsurprising. Half the kunoichi in Konoha shared that dream.
Finally, they looked to Feiyu.
Feiyu scratched his cheek casually.
"Uchiha Feiyu. Two-tomoe Sharingan. Specializes in body flicker and swordsmanship. Weakness: extremely afraid of dying. My dream… for now? Just to live peacefully."
Hizashi twitched.
Weakness: afraid of death.
Dream: survive.
Was this boy really an Uchiha?
Not a Nara someone swapped at birth?
Even in the Nara clan, someone this lazy and unmotivated would be rare!
Luckily, Hizashi wasn't bothered.
Half the Hyūga branch family had already given up on life thanks to the caged bird seal.
