The Warden's first step never touched the ground.
Reality cracked beneath its foot long before it reached the city. Invisible fractures spread across the sky like broken glass, each one swallowing light before sealing itself again.
Every Judge withdrew.
Every Herald lowered its head.
Even the crimson Rift grew still.
The battlefield now belonged to a single being.
Kael watched in silence.
The black blade rested at his side, its silver aura growing brighter with every heartbeat.
The Warden stopped several kilometers above the city.
Its crimson eyes studied Kael for a long time.
"You have changed."
Kael answered calmly.
"So have you."
The Warden's gaze shifted toward Ari, Mika, and Lune.
"I see why."
Ari instinctively stepped forward.
Kael immediately raised his hand.
"Stay back."
"But—"
"That's not a request."
Something in Kael's voice made Ari stop.
He had never heard that tone before.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Certainty.
The Warden looked back at Kael.
"You have broken the covenant."
"I know."
"You created successors."
"I created a family."
"They are the same."
Kael slowly shook his head.
"No."
The Warden's chains rattled softly.
"They will inherit your burden."
"They'll inherit my love."
For the first time, the Warden remained silent.
It seemed to consider those words.
Then it raised its chained spear.
"Love has destroyed more worlds than hatred."
Kael smiled sadly.
"And yet it's still worth protecting."
The Warden disappeared.
A sonic boom echoed across the battlefield as it reappeared directly before Kael.
The chained spear descended.
Kael met it with his sword.
The collision produced no explosion.
Instead, the entire city froze.
People running through the streets stopped in place.
Falling debris remained suspended in the air.
Rain hung motionless.
Even sound disappeared.
Only those touched by extraordinary power could still move.
Ari looked around in shock.
"Time..."
Lune shook her head.
"No."
"This isn't time."
"It's reality choosing not to continue until they're finished."
The Warden pushed forward.
The chained spear forced Kael backward through the frozen sky.
For the first time in the battle, Kael's boots carved visible trails through empty air.
The armored warrior watched quietly.
"They're evenly matched."
Leon stared at him.
"Evenly?"
"I've never seen anyone push Kael back."
The armored warrior folded his arms.
"Neither have I."
Kael twisted his blade, redirecting the spear just enough to slip past it.
His fist drove into the Warden's chest.
The impact rang like a massive bell.
The Warden staggered one step.
Only one.
Then it answered with a backhand strike.
Kael blocked it.
Even so, he was launched across the sky, crashing through three floating fragments of shattered reality before regaining his balance.
Ari's heart pounded.
"Kael..."
The Warden had done something no Judge had managed.
It had forced Kael to defend.
The Warden lowered its spear.
"I was correct."
"You have become weaker."
Kael brushed dust from his sleeve.
"No."
"I've become careful."
The Warden frowned.
"There is no difference."
"There is."
Kael looked toward the city below.
"My strength used to exist for battle."
His gaze settled on Ari.
Then Mika.
Then Lune.
"Now it exists for them."
The black blade began humming again.
Only this time, Ari felt something else.
Warmth.
The overwhelming pressure surrounding Kael didn't feel oppressive anymore.
It felt...
Protective.
Lune closed her eyes.
"I understand."
Mika looked at her.
"What?"
"His power changed."
Leon frowned.
"Power doesn't change."
"It does," Lune whispered.
"When the heart guiding it changes."
Far beyond the battlefield, inside the chamber of living stars, the Seven Rulers watched silently.
One of them leaned forward.
"The Anchor's authority has evolved."
Another narrowed its eyes.
"Impossible."
"The records never mentioned this."
The eldest ruler remained expressionless.
"Because it has never happened before."
Back on Earth, the Warden suddenly drove its spear into empty space.
The moment the tip touched the air, chains erupted across the battlefield.
They shot toward Kael from every direction.
Toward Ari.
Toward Mika.
Toward Lune.
Toward every surviving hunter.
Kael's eyes widened.
"They're soul chains."
The armored warrior immediately moved, cutting through dozens before they reached the civilians.
Leon and the remaining hunters joined him.
But there were too many.
One chain slipped past them all.
It raced toward Ari.
He raised a barrier.
The chain ignored it.
It passed through the shield as though it didn't exist.
Ari froze.
"It... went through..."
The chain reached his chest—
And stopped.
A gentle hand had caught it.
Kael stood between Ari and the chain.
His bare hand gripped the glowing links tightly.
Blood dripped from his palm.
The Warden looked genuinely surprised.
"You still remember how."
Kael tightened his grip.
"I never forgot."
With a sharp pull, he ripped the chain apart.
The remaining chains instantly dissolved.
The Warden slowly nodded.
"I see."
"So that is the path you chose."
Kael released the broken links.
"They're children."
"They deserve a future."
The Warden lowered its spear.
"And if protecting that future requires your death?"
Kael answered without hesitation.
"Then I won't hesitate."
Silence filled the battlefield.
The Warden stared at him for several long seconds.
Then, unexpectedly, it laughed.
The deep sound echoed across the frozen world.
"I wondered."
It rested the spear across its shoulder.
"Whether the First Hunter still existed."
Its crimson eyes burned brighter.
"Now I see."
"It doesn't."
A pulse of unimaginable power erupted from the Warden's body.
"The man standing before me..."
The chains around its armor shattered one by one.
"...is something far more dangerous."
The last chain broke.
The crimson Rift expanded to its greatest size yet.
Above the city, the heavens darkened.
The true battle had only just begun.
