The last chain shattered into crimson fragments that scattered across the sky like burning glass.
The instant the final link disappeared, the frozen world began moving again.
Rain resumed its fall.
Broken buildings continued collapsing.
The roar of distant explosions returned all at once, flooding the city with sound.
For everyone below, it felt as though only a second had passed.
Only Kael, the Warden, and the others who had witnessed the frozen battlefield understood that an entire battle had taken place beyond normal time.
The Warden lowered its spear.
"You've changed more than I expected."
Kael remained silent.
His eyes never left the Warden.
A cool breeze swept through the ruined streets below, carrying dust and ash between the shattered buildings.
Ari looked at Kael's injured hand.
Blood still dripped from his fingers.
"You're hurt..."
Kael glanced down briefly.
"It's nothing."
Before Ari could reply, the wound closed completely.
Even the blood on his hand disappeared.
Leon let out a quiet laugh.
"I forget sometimes."
"What?"
"How terrifying his regeneration is."
The armored warrior beside Kael shook his head.
"It isn't regeneration."
Everyone turned toward him.
"He isn't healing."
"Then what's happening?" Mika asked.
The warrior's expression became serious.
"Reality refuses to let him stay injured."
A heavy silence followed.
Ari frowned.
"So... the world itself is protecting him?"
Kael finally spoke.
"No."
"It's repaying a debt."
No one understood what he meant.
Not even Leon.
The Warden's crimson eyes narrowed.
"You still carry that burden."
"I chose to."
"It was never yours to bear."
Kael looked toward the sky for a brief moment.
"Someone had to."
The Warden sighed.
"You always were stubborn."
Without warning, it thrust its spear into the heavens.
The crimson Rift trembled violently.
A low, ancient sound echoed from beyond it.
It was neither a roar nor a scream.
It sounded like countless worlds crying out at once.
Lune clutched her head.
"I can hear them..."
Mika caught her before she collapsed.
"What do you hear?"
"They're calling for help."
Tears streamed down Lune's face.
"There are so many..."
"So many worlds..."
The Warden watched her quietly.
"So another Listener has awakened."
Kael looked toward Lune.
His expression softened.
"I was hoping she'd have more time."
The Warden slowly nodded.
"There is no more time."
The darkness beyond the Rift shifted.
Images began appearing inside it.
One world burned beneath black flames.
Another had become an endless frozen wasteland.
Another floated in pieces through empty space.
Countless civilizations.
Countless planets.
Countless lives.
Gone.
Ari stared in horror.
"What happened to them?"
The Warden answered.
"They failed."
The words echoed through the battlefield.
"They resisted correction."
"They embraced chaos."
"They destroyed themselves."
Kael stepped forward.
"No."
The Warden looked at him.
"They were abandoned."
For the first time, the Warden said nothing.
Kael pointed toward the ruined worlds within the Rift.
"You judged them."
"You measured them."
"But you never saved them."
The Warden's grip tightened around its spear.
"It is not our purpose to save."
"And that's why I stood against you."
A strange silence settled between them.
It wasn't the silence of enemies.
It was the silence of two ancient beings remembering a conversation they had once had long ago.
Ari noticed it immediately.
"You know each other."
Neither answered.
Instead, the armored warrior spoke.
"They weren't always enemies."
Everyone looked at him.
"There was a time..."
His eyes drifted toward the Warden.
"...when they fought side by side."
Ari blinked.
"What?"
Leon looked equally stunned.
"That's impossible."
The warrior shook his head.
"It happened before hunters existed."
"Before kingdoms."
"Before humanity built its first cities."
Kael closed his eyes.
"You don't need to tell them."
"They deserve to know," the warrior replied.
The Warden remained motionless.
It made no attempt to stop him.
The warrior took a slow breath.
"There were originally three Guardians."
"I was the Shield."
He rested a hand on the silver sword at his side.
"Kael was the Blade."
Then he looked toward the Warden.
"And he..."
"...was the Gate."
Ari frowned.
"The Gate?"
"The one who stood between realities."
The warrior nodded.
"He decided which worlds survived."
"And which were erased."
Silence spread across the battlefield.
Ari slowly turned toward the Warden.
"So you..."
"...used to protect worlds?"
The Warden's voice became quieter than before.
"I did."
"What changed?"
The crimson glow behind its helmet dimmed.
"I learned that not every world wishes to be saved."
Kael answered before anyone else could.
"So you stopped trying."
"I stopped believing."
The words struck Kael harder than any weapon.
For the first time since the battle began, sadness crossed his face.
"You were my friend."
"I remember."
"And now?"
The Warden looked directly into Kael's eyes.
"Now I am your judgment."
The air trembled.
The Judges surrounding the battlefield raised their hands in perfect unison.
Streams of crimson energy flowed toward the Warden, surrounding its body like an endless storm.
Its black armor began changing.
New plates formed over the old ones.
The cracks glowing across its chest sealed shut.
Its chained spear grew longer, its blade expanding into a weapon large enough to split mountains.
The pressure descending upon the city doubled.
Then tripled.
Ari struggled to remain standing.
His barriers flickered uncontrollably.
Mika's control over space became unstable.
Even Leon fell to one knee.
Only Kael remained unmoved.
The Warden lifted its transformed spear.
"This battle can no longer be avoided."
Kael slowly raised the Blade of Ending.
"I know."
The two ancient Guardians stared at one another across the broken sky.
Once, they had defended creation together.
Now, they stood on opposite sides of its future.
Above them, the crimson Rift widened again.
Deep within its endless darkness, a pair of unfamiliar golden eyes slowly opened.
Neither Kael nor the Warden noticed.
But Lune did.
Her breathing stopped.
A whisper escaped her lips.
"Something else..."
"...is watching us."
