Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

One week later after the wedding

It has been a long week since that fateful day. The day when Carolyn and Max wedded to each other – which they don't regret.

The day when Carolyn suddenly jumped from second in line to become Queen of Denmark.

That day when they and their country lost their beloved Queen Sophia and Crown Princes Johann.

Not only Denmark, but more than half the world mourned the loss. While many also rejoiced in the long overdue marriage of Carolyn, to her love of her life. Her answer to her years of praying for a soulmate was finally answered.

She married Max Peters or rather Count Maxwell James Peters – after her grandmother styled him, bestowing the title of 'Count Max James Peters, Protector of the Danish Royals, Honorable Knight of the Order of the Elephant', when they arrived in Denmark from South Africa.

The, now late, Queen Sophia, bestowed it to him after saving her granddaughters a few weeks back in South Africa.

But per his marriage to Carolyn, he is now known as Prince Consort Max Peters, the Duke of Denmark, Protector of the Danish Royals, Knight of the Order of the Elephant, after Carolyn signed the degree a day later.

Three days after the horrific deaths of Queen Sophia and Crown Prince Johann, the country gathered together with millions around the world for a massive funeral of the two.

It was a sad day for all.

With Max severely limited in movement, still recovering from his injuries, the new Queen Carolyn was mostly alone.

He was with her in the church, but in a wheelchair. For the procession afterwards, tradition dictated the remaining royal family members were to walk behind the carriages towards the cemetery, based on their rank and succession to the throne.

But Carolyn was almost alone, with her sister on her one side, while her uncles, aunts and cousins of her fathers' side were behind her. As consort, Max was not allowed to 'walk' alongside her, but at the rear, after the leading royals. But he didn't.

What she craved the most, was to hold her husband's hand, to draw on strength from it. But he was not allowed to join her in the wheelchair, as the bumps in the road would hurt his still mending pelvis. And, with many members of parliament and her close advisers, fearing it would draw the attention away from the departed and onto him.

So, Max had to ride in a vehicle, behind the long line of walking mourners.
