Cherreads

Chapter 33 - .

Night settles into Lyrelle's house slowly, the kind that makes everything feel closer than it should.

The living room lights are dim. Phones lie face-down on the table like they've been disciplined. No one trusts them anymore.

Prince sits beside Lyrelle, shoulder to shoulder. His thumb moves absentmindedly against her knuckles, a habit he never dropped. She leans into him without thinking this time. It feels right. Familiar. Earned.

"Stay," she murmurs.

"I'm not leaving," he says, low, sure.

Across the room, Kyra watches the way his arm curves around Lyrelle's back. Her stomach tightens. She pulls Jake's hoodie tighter around herself, sleeves hiding her hands.

Jake notices. He always does.

He shifts closer, their knees touching. "You don't have to disappear," he whispers.

She forces a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "I'm here."

It's almost convincing.

Kaida sits on the floor, back against the couch. Thorian sits beside her, close but not touching. Their shoulders hover a breath apart.

"You're counting," he says quietly.

She blinks. "What?"

"Every time things get loud, you count," he replies.

She exhales through her nose. He's right. He always is.

Summer sprawls on the rug, legs crossed, tossing a pillow at Zyren's foot. "Stop staring. It's weird."

Zyren smirks. "You started it."

She rolls her eyes, but the corner of her mouth lifts. Their tension hums, unspoken, unresolved. The kind that snaps if touched wrong.

Ryan leans against the doorframe, arms crossed. His gaze drifts to the window, then back to the group. He's quieter than usual. Watching. Listening.

Jason sits alone on the armchair. His phone lights up briefly. He doesn't check it. He stares at the empty space beside him instead, jaw tight.

Silence stretches.

Then Prince stands.

"I'm getting water," he says.

Kyra's breath catches.

"I'll come," she blurts out, too fast.

The room stills for half a second. Lyrelle looks up, surprised but not suspicious.

Jake turns his head slowly. "You okay?"

Kyra nods. "Just thirsty."

Prince hesitates. Just a fraction. Then nods. "Sure."

They disappear into the kitchen.

The distance between them feels heavier than the walls.

The faucet runs. Prince stares at the sink like it might answer him. Kyra leans against the counter, arms folded, eyes on the floor.

"You don't have to do this," he says quietly.

"I know," she replies.

Silence again.

The fridge hums. The clock ticks.

"I didn't mean for it to happen," Kyra whispers.

Prince's jaw tightens. He doesn't look at her. "Neither did I."

She laughs softly, broken. "That's the worst part."

He finally turns. Their eyes meet. Something old flickers. Something dangerous.

From the living room, Lyrelle laughs at something Summer says.

The sound cuts through them both.

Prince steps back. "We can't talk about this."

Kyra nods quickly. "I know."

Their phones vibrate at the same time.

Both freeze.

Prince doesn't check his.

Kyra does.

Her screen glows.

"PROXIMITY DETECTED."

She drops the phone like it burned her.

Back in the living room, Kaida stiffens.

Her phone lights up on the table.

Everyone's does.

No sound.

Just words.

"THE TRUTH IS RESTLESS."

Lyrelle's smile fades. She looks toward the kitchen.

Thorian shifts closer to Kaida instinctively. His fingers brush hers. She doesn't pull away.

Summer sits up. "No. Nope. We're not doing this again."

Zyren stands. "Too late."

Another message.

"THE FIRST CRACK WILL NOT COME FROM THE LIE."

"IT WILL COME FROM LOVE."

Jason exhales sharply, hands shaking.

Ryan's eyes narrow. "It's picking at us."

Kaida doesn't look up. She already knows where this leads.

Prince and Kyra step back into the room together.

Lyrelle notices the space between them immediately. The way Prince won't meet her eyes. The way Kyra's hands tremble.

She doesn't say anything.

Yet.

Kaida's phone buzzes again.

One final line appears.

"ROUND WILL BEGIN WHEN DENIAL FEELS SAFEST."

The lights flicker once.

Then stop.

Nothing else happens.

That's the worst part.

Because now everyone feels it.

Something is coming.

And this time, it's not asking questions.
