Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Thoughts

It was fun to just roam around randomly. I knew that the world outside the farm wasn't any more or less dangerous than just staying at home. A fucking nuke could drop on our heads randomly or some alternate universe enemy could come over to murder me when I was a kid.

"How do I even defend against the Flash and his Speedster nonsense?" By the Flash, I mean his enemies. But some of those enemies were also the Flash so yeah. Still Speedster bullshit.

I looked down towards the end of the road, but there were no cars. Neither direction as far as I could see, and that was pretty damn far even at night. So I leaned down and got into position. With a smirk, I started sprinting!

*Woosh~!* It wasn't a sonic boom, but it was still fucking fast! At first it was like I was on a bike, then it was more like a motorcycle! Faster and faster, until I capped out at what was probably a hundred miles per hour.

I'm getting there. I'm getting a little faster and stronger every day. I'm figuring it out. This whole Kryptonian thing.

I breathed in the air that was beating on my face and it actually felt a little chilly. But then I noticed something in the wind and started slowing down. It smelled like burning rubber, plastic, wood… Fire in general. Not particularly strange.

But this is Smallville and I'm Clark Kent. I thought about just running back home and ignoring it, but I was like dozens of miles from my house by now. And I had the curiosity of a murderous Lantern Ring wielding cat. Or basically any normal Isekai protagonist.

"Aaah~!" A loud scream caught my attention as I got closer and the smell got stronger. I started sprinting again, ramping up my speed so fast that I almost broke my previous record! Then I slowed down just as quickly, because I could see the problem immediately.

A black car crashed into a tree. Not particularly strange. The problem is that it was on fire and so was the tree it crashed into…

"Mommy! Wake up! Wake up Mommy! Please!" A little girl was in the back, crying loudly. I approached quickly and tried to open the left side-door, but it was locked. I hopped slightly and reached my arm inside, unlocking it easily enough.

"Come on, we gotta go." I unbuckled the seatbelt and yoiked the screaming brat from the burning vehicle.

"Mommy! Let go of me! We have to save Mommy!" The brown-haired, blue eyed girl was about the same size as I was, maybe my age or older. So it was a little awkward to carry her when she was wiggling around so much.

"Calm down, I'll go get her if you'd just stop freaking out for a few seconds!" I tossed the kid onto the dirt and then ran back over to the door. The window was also open, so it wasn't too difficult to reach inside and unlock the door. I looked over at the little girl that was rushing over and groaned in irritation, "Stay back, there's a fucking fire!"

"Mom… Mommy…" The girl stopped and was trembling a lot as she looked behind me. I turned around and saw the problem. The woman's head was busted open and her neck was twisted really badly. The steering wheel was also broken, probably by her face. Regardless of how bad it looked, I still reached into the car and grabbed her body. She didn't wear a seatbelt, so it's a miracle she didn't go flying through the windshield. No, maybe she would've survived that?

"Let's go." I yanked the woman out, though her crushed lower legs stayed behind. It didn't really matter at this point though. She didn't even twitch.

"Mommy…" The adorable brat was horrified and looked like she was going to throw up. But that was understandable. If I saw either of my mothers in a state like this, I'd be even worse. She wasn't my Mom though. Just some random person.

"It's gonna be alright." It wouldn't, "Everything is fine. I'll take you guys to my house to rest." My parents are gonna be so fucking pissed.

"Yeah-yeah, Mommy will be fine after some rest." The little girl seemed to delude herself pretty easily.

*Boom~!* The dramatic explosion happened after we were pretty far away, but it caused the kid to start crying and freaking out in the middle of the road. I grabbed the child, put her on her mother's chest and then picked up the dead woman. Sure, for a four year old to be able to do that was impressive, but in the DC Universe it was probably still within the limits of humanity, right?

I didn't worry too much about it either way. Just kept walking at a brisk pace. I wonder what it's gonna be like when I get faster? When I can walk at the speed of sound… Will it still feel like it takes forever, but I'm at least moving a much farther distance?

The girl's mother smelled like booze. And there were beer bottles in the car. She was drunk driving. I thought back to everything I saw and smiled wryly. I should've grabbed some of the girl's things. Toys and dolls, other mementos.

The child didn't say anything about it. She didn't seem to care. All she cared about was her mother and that's all I was able to salvage.

No matter what though. I did save a child from a burning car. I felt good about it. Made me feel like I might not be quite as much of a piece of shit as I expected. I went out of my way to save something. Something I never would've even tried to do in my past life.

I'd say that's an improvement for sure. Hell, Clark Kent didn't turn into Superman until he was in his twenties. His teens were when he started actually helping and saving people from random bullshit. At four years old, I saved a little kid.

I'm awesome!

I'm pretty sure there's shit leaking from the corpse and we're nowhere near my house.

I should've grabbed a stuffed animal or something. Fuck this is gross. Why the fuck did I think this was a good idea?
