Chapter 187: The Fake
Matt was kicked out of the car and let out a shout for Spider-Man.
Peter immediately understood. He shot a web, catching Daredevil mid-air and pulling him back with a sharp tug. After a 180-degree flip in the air, Matt dove back into the vehicle.
Once he saw that Matt was safe, Peter prepared to climb into the back seat but noticed the driver, who was now drenched in sweat. The driver caught his eye and saw Spider-Man staring at him from outside the window.
"I can't stop the car!" the driver gasped, quickly turning his eyes back to the road.
"Actually, you really can stop for a second!" Using the strength of his core, Peter kicked through the passenger window with both feet, scrambled into the front, and knocked the driver unconscious with a single punch.
"Alright, time for you to take a nap." Peter grabbed the driver under the armpits and hauled him from the driver's seat over to the passenger side.
"Stop the car, Spider Squad!" Peter shouted.
A red-clad ninja appeared instantly, slammed on the brakes, and cut the steering wheel hard to the right in one fluid motion.
Screech! The car performed a 360-degree spin on the road, leaving circular tire marks on the asphalt.
As the vehicle came to a halt, Peter turned his head toward Daredevil, who was still tangled with Kingpin.
"Need a hand?" Peter asked.
"Obviously! Don't even ask that from now on!" Matt used his blind cane to block Kingpin's fist. The sheer force of the blow made his arm go numb.
"Get away from me, you disgusting red bugs." The boss grabbed Daredevil's cane with one hand and his waist with the other, hoisting him up and slamming him onto the front driver's seat.
Thud! Daredevil landed right on top of the Spider Ninja in the driver's seat, who instantly dissolved into black mist and vanished.
"Uh... is your friend okay?" Daredevil was startled by the way the ninja had dissipated.
"He's fine." Suddenly, Peter's Spider-Sense tingled. He turned and opened his palm, catching Kingpin's fist with one hand.
"Cool~ your fist is huge!" Peter's hand couldn't even wrap around Kingpin's knuckles.
Yet, that seemingly thin and small palm held back a fist twice its size.
"A mutated little spider?" the boss growled through gritted teeth. He was putting all his strength into it, yet Spider-Man had blocked him with ease.
"Strictly speaking, you could say that." Peter gripped Kingpin's fist tight and delivered a sharp kick to his chest.
Kingpin was sent flying, his massive body crashing to the ground and rolling several times.
"Damn it." The boss felt liquid trickling from the corner of his mouth. He wiped it away and, by the dim light of a nearby streetlamp, saw that it was bright red blood.
"Surrender, Kingpin!" Matt jumped out of the car window and landed in front of him, pointing his cane at Kingpin's head.
"Remember to be a good boy when you get to the police station," Peter said, standing beside Daredevil. The capture of this "Underworld Emperor" had gone surprisingly smoothly.
"Hahahaha!" After a loud laugh, the boss gave them an insidious look. "Do you really think I am the Kingpin...?"
"What?! You're not Kingpin?!" Peter asked in shock.
"So he really isn't." Matt had been half-prepared for this. How could Kingpin be caught so easily?
"Even if you aren't him, you're still taking a trip to prison." Matt tapped the fake Kingpin's face with his cane, then turned to Peter. "That ability of yours is quite convenient. Send him to jail."
While Daredevil wasn't looking, the fake Kingpin reached his right hand into his suit.
"What are you doing?" Peter knelt down and grabbed the right hand. With a gentle twist, a miniature pocket knife fell to the ground.
"Looks like you're quite the dishonest one," Matt said with a cold gaze. Though this man was a fake, he was just as treacherous as the real one.
The fake Kingpin chuckled. He didn't seem worried about being hauled off to prison. "Daredevil, I know you. You've ruined our business many times."
"You call that animalistic filth you do 'business'?" Matt mocked.
"And you, Spider-Man!" The fake Kingpin looked up at him.
"Uh... what about me?" Peter didn't recall having much overlap with Kingpin, though now that he knew such a villain existed, he wouldn't just stand by.
The fake Kingpin didn't answer, but Matt explained, "Like I said before, Kingpin controls most of the underworld in America. Every time you disrupt a gang deal, Kingpin's shadow is likely behind it."
"So I'm already on his radar?" Peter felt he needed to be more careful. His identity had to remain a secret.
"You could say that. Alright... take him to jail." Matt sighed, looking slightly disappointed as he leaned on his cane to leave.
Peter summoned the Spider Squad to tie the fake Kingpin up and deliver him to the police station. He was sure the police could figure out his real identity.
"Don't be so disappointed, man. Criminals always get brought to justice in the end," Peter comforted Matt as he followed behind.
"I know that. I don't need a minor to lecture me," Matt snapped.
"Wait! I'm almost an adult!" Peter protested. He was about to go to college, after all.
"Sure, minor," Matt teased.
"Oh yeah? From your tone, are you some kind of old man then?" Peter shot back.
"Minor."
"Old man."
"Minor..."
"Old man..."
"Oh~ is our busy superhero Spider-Man back?" Silas heard the commotion at the window and waved a hand, signaling Little Black to retreat into the Shadow Realm.
Peter flopped onto Silas's bed and stretched. "Mhm~ tonight was exhausting."
"Could you please get off my bed?" Silas said with a dark expression. Peter had been swinging around in that suit all night; who knew what was on it.
"It's fine, Silas. You can sleep in my room tonight." Peter didn't mind where he slept.
"No, I mind," Silas said blankly. Peter's bed was probably just as dirty from him flopping on it in his suit.
"Come on, Silas, we're brothers." Peter flipped off the bed and landed next to Silas, putting an arm around his shoulder.
"Go take a shower already." Silas twitched his shoulder away.
"Silas, you're breaking my heart," Peter moaned, clutching his chest.
"Just take off the suit before Uncle Ben comes up for a check," Silas reminded him.
Ben Parker usually came up around this time to chat with them or play some games. As Ben put it, only by entering the children's world could he communicate with them better, ensuring they wouldn't keep secrets to themselves.
"Right." Peter pulled off his mask, unzipped the back, and stepped out of the suit. His bare skin was exposed, with only his boxers covering the essentials.
"Peter, do you not wear anything under that?" Silas rolled his eyes.
"I'm always running around. Wearing another layer underneath is just too hot, so I don't bother," Peter said nonchalantly. Since he usually left early and came back late, heading straight for the shower anyway, he didn't see the point in extra clothes.
