Chapter 134 - Chapter 133: setup

The silence did not break—it deepened, pressing down on the hall like an unseen weight.

Bai Lanyue's fingers curled into her palm, nails biting into her skin as if pain could anchor her slipping control. Her gaze locked onto Su Yiren, disbelief warring with something far more dangerous—panic.

"No…" she breathed, the word barely audible.

But Su Yiren had already stepped forward.

Each step she took echoed softly, yet it carried across the entire hall. She did not rush. She did not hesitate. The calm in her expression was not weakness—it was resolution.

When she reached the front, she stopped just short of the podium, her eyes sweeping across the crowd. For a fleeting second, they paused on Bai Lanyue.

There was no hatred there.

And somehow, that was worse.

"You seem surprised," Su Yiren said quietly.

The simplicity of her voice made several guests shift uncomfortably.

Bai Lanyue straightened abruptly, as if jolted back to life. "Surprised?" she let out a sharp laugh, though it cracked at the edges. "You disappeared for weeks and suddenly walk in here with—" her gaze flicked to Ji Yanluo "—him, and expect no one to question it?"

Her tone rose, desperation creeping in. "Or should we all just believe whatever story you decide to tell now?"

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

Yes—this was still salvageable.

Doubt. All she needed was doubt.

But Ji Yanluo moved.

It was a small step forward, yet the effect was immediate. The murmurs died once more, as though an invisible hand had silenced the room.

"You speak of stories," he said evenly, his voice low but carrying effortlessly, "yet everything shown here is evidence."

His gaze settled on Bai Lanyue—cold, precise.

"Or would you like to deny it again?"

For a fraction of a second, Bai Lanyue faltered.

That fraction was enough.

Su Yiren stepped past him then, ascending the podium. The microphone caught the soft exhale she released before she spoke.

"Five years ago," she began, her voice steady, "I made a choice."

The room stilled.

"I chose to believe lies. I chose to act on anger. And because of that… an innocent person suffered."

Her eyes shifted.

Bai Zhiqi.

"I confessed already," she continued. "Everything I did. Everything I allowed to happen."

A faint tremor passed through the crowd.

This was no longer accusation.

This was admission.

"And I am here today," Su Yiren said, "not to ask for forgiveness… but to end what should have never begun."

Bai Lanyue's composure finally cracked.

"End?" she repeated sharply. "You think you can just walk in here and 'end' things?" Her voice rose, losing its careful fragility. "Do you even hear yourself? You were part of it too!"

"Yes."

The single word cut through her outburst like a blade.

Su Yiren did not flinch.

"I was."

The admission landed heavier than denial ever could.

"And that is why I came back," she added softly. "To take responsibility… and to make sure the truth is no longer buried."

Bai Lanyue stared at her, something frantic flickering in her eyes.

"No… no, you're lying," she shook her head, stepping back. "You're all lying. This is staged. This—this is a setup!"

But her voice no longer carried conviction.

Only fear.

Shen Yichen, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke—his tone low, conflicted.

"Lanyue… stop."

She froze.

His words did not defend her.

They ended her.

The realization hit like a visible blow.

Around them, the guests no longer looked uncertain. The doubt she had tried to plant had withered before it could take root. What remained was clarity—sharp and unforgiving.

Bai Lanyue let out a hollow laugh, her shoulders trembling.

"So this is how it ends…" she murmured.

Her gaze swept the room—the same room that once admired her, praised her, believed in her.

Now, they only watched.

Judged.

Distanced.

Slowly, her eyes returned to Su Yiren… then shifted to Bai Zhiqi.

For the first time, there was no mask.

Only raw, unraveling defeat.

But beneath it—

A flicker of something darker.

Something not yet extinguished.

"You think this is over?" she whispered, her voice dropping into something almost inaudible, yet chilling.

Her lips curved—just slightly.

"This… is only the beginning."

And in that moment, despite the overwhelming evidence, despite the truth laid bare—

A shiver passed through the hall.

Because some endings…

Did not come quietly.
