Chapter 135 - Chapter 135: was over

The tension did not dissipate after Bai Lanyue's words—it coiled tighter, like a storm refusing to break.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then—

"Miss Bai Lanyue."

The voice was firm, unfamiliar, and authoritative.

Heads turned toward the entrance as a group of uniformed officers stepped into the hall, their presence cutting cleanly through the lingering drama. The soft echo of their shoes against marble sounded louder than it should have, each step deliberate, final.

Bai Lanyue's faint smile froze.

Reality had arrived.

"We have received sufficient evidence regarding your involvement in the events five years ago, including conspiracy, evidence tampering, and wrongful accusation," the lead officer stated. "You will need to come with us for further investigation."

A collective gasp rippled through the guests.

This was no longer a scandal.

It was an arrest.

Bai Lanyue's gaze darted around the room—faces she once controlled, people who once stood by her. Not one of them stepped forward now. Not one voice rose in her defense.

Her fingers trembled.

Then stilled.

Slowly… she laughed.

At first, it was soft. Then it grew—sharp, hollow, echoing in the vast hall.

"So this is it?" she said, tilting her head slightly. "All of you… so eager to watch me fall."

Her eyes flicked to Shen Yichen.

"And you?"

Shen Yichen's jaw tightened, but he did not look away. "You did this to yourself."

The words landed without mercy.

Something inside Bai Lanyue snapped—just briefly—but she caught it, straightening her posture, lifting her chin. Even now, she refused to crumble completely.

"If I'm going down…" she murmured, her gaze sliding toward Su Yiren and Bai Zhiqi, "…do you really think you'll walk away untouched?"

The officer stepped forward. "Miss Bai—"

"I'll walk myself," she cut in sharply.

The room fell silent again as she moved.

Each step she took toward the officers was steady, controlled—like a queen leaving her throne, not a criminal being taken away. But the illusion cracked in the tightness of her shoulders, in the way her fingers curled ever so slightly at her sides.

As she passed Su Yiren, she paused.

Just for a second.

"Rebirth?" she whispered, so only Su Yiren could hear. "Let's see how long that lasts."

Then she walked on.

And this time—

No one stopped her.

The doors closed behind her with a quiet, definitive sound.

Gone.

Just like that.

The hall remained frozen, as though time itself needed a moment to catch up.

Then the noise returned—whispers, hushed voices, disbelief spilling over.

But at the center of it all, the storm had already passed.

Su Yiren stood still on the podium, her hands lightly gripping the edge. The strength she had held so firmly until now wavered—just slightly.

It was over.

Or at least… this part of it was.

"You did well."

Ji Yanluo's voice came from beside her, quieter now, stripped of its earlier authority.

Su Yiren let out a slow breath she didn't realize she had been holding. "It doesn't feel like it."

"It rarely does," he replied.

Her gaze shifted, landing on Bai Zhiqi.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Five years of pain.

Five years of silence.

Five years of stolen time stood between them.

"I—" Su Yiren started, but the words caught.

Bai Zhiqi stepped forward.

The movement alone silenced everything around them once more.

"You don't need to say it here," Bai Zhiqi said softly.

Her voice wasn't cold.

But it wasn't warm either.

It was… measured.

Careful.

"I've heard your confession," she continued. "The rest… we'll settle properly."

Not forgiveness.

Not rejection.

Something in between.

Something real.

Su Yiren nodded slowly.

"I understand."

Across the hall, Shen Yichen watched the two women, his expression unreadable.

Everything had changed.

The truth was out.

The past had been dragged into the light.

But somehow… it didn't feel like an ending.

It felt like the beginning of something far more complicated.

Outside, the night air was cool.

The banquet lights glowed behind tall windows, distant now, almost unreal.

And as Bai Lanyue was led into the waiting car, she turned her head slightly, glancing back at the building one last time.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

Because deep in her eyes—

The story was not over.

Not yet.
