Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 : A Narrow Escape

Love Behind the Kremlin Walls

The train rumbled on, carrying them deeper into the heart of East Berlin. Sasha's heart was still racing from their narrow escape, her mind reeling with the consequences of what could have happened if they had been caught.

Jack's eyes were fixed on hers, his gaze intense. "You did great back there," he said, his voice low and soothing. "You're a natural."

Sasha smiled, feeling a surge of pride and adrenaline. She had never done anything like this before, and the thrill of it was intoxicating.

As they rode the train, they discussed their next move. They had to get Dr. Helmut out of East Berlin, and the safest way to do that was to get him to the West German border.

But as they were discussing the plan, Sasha noticed a man watching them from across the train car. He was dressed in a long coat, his eyes fixed on them with an unnerving intensity.

"Jack, I think we've got a problem," she whispered, nodding towards the man.

Jack followed her gaze, his eyes narrowing. "Let's get off at the next stop," he said, his voice low and urgent.

They gathered their things and got off the train at the next station, the man following close behind. Sasha's heart was racing as they made their way through the crowded streets, the man hot on their heels.

As they turned a corner, Jack suddenly pulled her into a narrow alleyway. "Stay close," he whispered, his eyes scanning the area.

The man followed them into the alley, his eyes fixed on them with a cold, calculating gaze. Sasha's heart was pounding in her chest as Jack pushed her behind him, his body shielding hers.

"Get ready to run," he whispered, his eyes locked on the man.

The man pulled out a gun, his eyes fixed on Jack. "You're not going anywhere," he said, his voice cold and menacing.

Sasha's heart was racing as Jack pushed her back, his eyes locked on the man. "Run," he mouthed, his voice barely audible.

Sasha turned and ran, the sound of gunfire echoing through the alleyway. She didn't look back, she didn't dare.

She ran as fast as she could, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't know where she was going, she just knew she had to get away.

As she turned a corner, she saw a taxi waiting at the curb. She jumped in, gasping for breath.

"Get me out of here," she shouted, her eyes scanning the rearview mirror.

The taxi driver looked at her, his eyes wide with surprise. "Where to, Fräulein?"

Sasha hesitated, she didn't know where to go. But then she remembered the safe house, the one Jack had told her about in case of an emergency.

"Take me to 23, Friedrichstraße," she said, her voice firm and determined.

The taxi driver nodded, and the car sped off into the night.

Sasha looked back, her heart still racing. She had escaped, but for how long?
