Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Black Dragon Carving, William’s Provocation

Janet's words fell, and she held her breath, quietly waiting for Jiang Yan's answer.

Jiang Yan smiled. "That would be my honor."

He had always liked Janet's character in Devouring the Starry Sky. Now, with this real Janet taking the initiative to grow closer, how could he possibly refuse?

"Then it's settled!"

A bright smile appeared on Janet's delicate face; her mood clearly lifted.

Jiang Yan took a glance at her mesmerising profile. His mood was just as good. He was even thinking about taking Janet down directly when the time came.

As the sports car glided forward, his gaze shifted to the scenery outside the window—bustling streets, ancient-style buildings, and city walls towering like history itself.

Hongning Base City.

The domain of Hong, the strongest human on Earth.

It was the safest base city in the world—so safe that even monster commanders dared not enter its range. Its architecture fully imitated the ancient Hanxia style, making Jiang Yan feel as if he had stepped into another era.

Because of this extreme security, countless wealthy families and warriors begged for a chance to settle here. But Hong had a simple rule:

Quality over quantity.

Thus, the city's population was intentionally capped at eighty million.

Before long, the car stopped with a gentle brake.

Janet turned her head—only to catch Jiang Yan openly admiring her.

This made the corners of her lips curve upwards.

She had felt countless gazes from training camp boys—greedy, possessive, or lustful.

But Jiang Yan's gaze didn't disgust her.

Instead… she felt a subtle, secret delight.

"We're here," Janet said.

Jiang Yan immediately pulled his gaze back and acted like he had been serious all along. "Already?"

Janet suppressed a laugh.

At the gate of the Global Headquarters of the Extreme Martial Arts Hall

William was standing there, checking his rank on the Black Dragon List, when the roar of a sports car engine reached his ears.

He looked up.

"Oh? Janet brought the newcomers back already?"

He walked forward, preparing to greet her—after all, she was the woman his boss Candace was desperately pursuing.

But halfway there, his footsteps froze.

A young man was sitting in Janet's passenger seat.

The next moment, Janet stepped out—and naturally held the young man's hand.

William's face instantly darkened.

Candace hadn't even touched Janet's hand yet.

And now some nobody had Janet taking the initiative to hold hands?

Who the hell was this brat?!

William quickly recorded a short video and sent it to Candace.

Then he walked over.

"Janet, these are the newcomers from the basic training camp? They look… average."

His eyes swept over the group, pausing on Jiang Yan with open contempt.

Jiang Yan ignored him.

The other twenty newbies had ugly expressions but didn't dare speak.

"William, shut your stinky mouth." Janet's expression turned cold.

She hated this guy the most.

Just because she didn't accept Candace's pursuit, William had taken it upon himself to act like they were already a couple. He even spread that image throughout the training camp.

"Jiang Yan, let's go."

Janet pulled Jiang Yan forward. The other twenty quickly followed.

As soon as they entered, Jiang Yan's gaze landed on the massive, fifty-meter-long Black Dragon Carving.

William followed, and his expression soured.

"So your name is Jiang Yan…" he muttered coldly.

Then, seeing Jiang Yan looking at the sculpture, he smirked and said maliciously:

"The black dragon's eyes are special. Don't stare at them."

He sneered silently.

Go on, stare. Let's see you embarrass yourself.

Even he didn't dare look into those eyes now.

Janet's expression changed.

On the surface, William seemed to be "reminding" them, but in reality, he was baiting them.

People were naturally rebellious—the more you told them not to do something, the more they wanted to try.

Just as Janet opened her mouth—

Too late.

All twenty newcomers—and Jiang Yan—were already looking straight into the black dragon's carved eyes.

An overwhelming, crushing aura hit Jiang Yan like a tidal wave.

His mind shook—

his body instinctively trembled—

an irresistible sleepiness engulfed him—

But he snapped awake almost instantly.

"What a terrifying king-level aura!"

Jiang Yan exhaled deeply.

Was this because his soul was strong from rebirth?

He wasn't sure.

But Janet was stunned—then thrilled.

Jiang Yan had stared into the black dragon's eyes and barely reacted.

That meant his willpower was exceptionally strong.

Her confidence in betting everything on Jiang Yan instantly solidified.

Meanwhile, the other twenty had blank, unfocused eyes—completely dazed.

William's eyes widened in disbelief.

But his irritation quickly overwhelmed his shock.

No wonder Janet favored this little white face.

"Wake up!"

William barked sharply.

The twenty jolted awake, visibly terrified. Their gazes instinctively moved toward Jiang Yan—and their hearts sank when they saw his calm expression.

Just how strong was he?

"Useless," William snorted.

Their faces flushed with shame.

Janet didn't defend them. Their willpower was indeed subpar.

She said, "The black dragon's eyes were made using the eyeballs of a king-level monster. Looking straight into them is the same as meeting a king-level monster head-on."

Everyone sucked in a breath.

Except Jiang Yan, who was calmly examining the dragon's scales.

On each scale was a name and ranking—

the Black Dragon List.

NO.1 — Renates Bridge

NO.2 — Chu Qiang

NO.4 — Shi Jiang

NO.46 — Candace

NO.76 — Janet

NO.82 — William

In total, 174 names.

Janet smiled as she explained, "This is the strength ranking of all current genius training camp members."

Jiang Yan nodded. He already knew this.

The higher your ranking, the more cultivation resources you received.

"Don't get arrogant just because the dragon's eyes didn't affect you."

William sneered. "You aren't genius training camp members yet."

Jiang Yan ignored him again.

But the other twenty panicked.

"What? We aren't members yet?"

They looked to Janet for explanation.

"It's true," Janet said. "Even if you won the quota, you still need to pass the basic entrance assessment."

The newbies swallowed nervously.

"When is the assessment?" someone asked.

"Tomorrow," Janet replied. "Today we'll conduct your basic strength test. After passing tomorrow's assessment, you'll become official members and can return home until formal training begins in March."

William crossed his arms, chin raised arrogantly.

"Even if you pass, you'll still be at the bottom. If you want to reach someone like me—top 100—it'll take at least two or three years."

His provocative gaze fell directly on Jiang Yan.

Janet rolled her eyes. "Don't mind him, Jiang Yan."

Jiang Yan nodded. In truth, he didn't take William seriously at all.

Those who entered the training camp through natural talent were all monsters.

William only lost in the original story because he met an even bigger monster—Luo Feng.

But with his cheat, Jiang Yan was confident that he would surpass William soon.

Janet said, "Let's go. I'll take you to the Ninefold Tower to test your strength."

She was eager to see Jiang Yan's numbers.

And Jiang Yan was eager too—he hadn't tested himself since breaking through to high-level general.

William watched them leave, his face stormy. Janet was paying far too much attention to that newcomer.

He quietly took out his communicator.

A message was sent to Candace—

along with the video of Janet holding Jiang Yan's hand.
