Sophia ran through the palace corridors, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the sound of footsteps behind her, the Queen's followers closing in. She didn't know how much longer she could keep running.
Just as she thought she couldn't go any further, she saw a door ahead of her. She burst through it, slamming it shut behind her and leaning against it to catch her breath.
But she knew it wouldn't hold for long. The Queen's followers would break it down, and she would be caught.
She looked around the room, her eyes scanning for a way out. And that's when she saw her - the Queen, standing in front of a large window, a look of triumph on her face.
"You're not going anywhere, Sophia," the Queen said, her voice cold and calculating.
Sophia's heart sank. She had been caught, and she didn't know what the Queen would do to her.
But to her surprise, the Queen didn't move. She just stood there, a look of sadness on her face.
"I never wanted it to come to this, Sophia," the Queen said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I never wanted to hurt you."
Sophia's eyes narrowed. What was the Queen talking about?
"I don't understand," Sophia said, her voice firm.
The Queen sighed, and for a moment, Sophia saw a glimpse of the woman she had once been - a woman who had loved, and laughed, and lived.
"I was never meant to be Queen," the Queen said, her voice distant. "I was never meant to rule. But my sister, your mother, she was. And when she died, I took the throne for myself."
Sophia's eyes widened as she realized the truth. The Queen had killed her mother, and taken the throne for herself.
"I did it for power," the Queen said, her voice cold. "I did it for the kingdom. But it consumed me, Sophia. It ate away at my soul, and I lost myself in the process."
Sophia's heart went out to the Queen, despite everything she had done. She saw the pain, the regret, and the sorrow in her eyes.
And in that moment, Sophia knew what she had to do.
"I forgive you," Sophia said, her voice soft.
The Queen's eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, Sophia saw a glimpse of hope.
But it was too late. The Queen's followers burst into the room, and the Queen's expression hardened.
"It's too late, Sophia," the Queen said, her voice cold. "The damage is done."
