Chapter 6: Hidden Directives
"Night, this is the latest directive."
A masked Onmitsukidō agent handed Tobirama Shiba a sealed scroll in the dim light. He accepted it without a word. "Night" remained his codename within their network. No unnecessary conversation passed between them. The agent disappeared into the shadows as quickly as he had arrived.
Tobirama was considered a hidden asset. Too much visible contact could attract unwanted scrutiny from other branches of the Onmitsukidō or Central 46, a risk his superiors were careful to avoid.
Before the agent fully left his sensing range, Tobirama activated his identification ability.
Name: Hirata Iro
Potential: B
Reiryoku: 7,200
Evaluation: A — A capable operative with solid combat strength.
Seeing the man's substantial reiryoku reserves, Tobirama felt a familiar pang of envy. His own spiritual power still sat below 5,000 — roughly the equivalent of five or six young talents like the ones he had begun guiding. As a member of the once-great Shiba clan, which had ranked alongside the prestigious Kuchiki and Shihōin families as the fifth noble house, he knew all too well how vital raw reiryoku volume was.
Only after confirming through his spiritual senses that the agent had completely withdrawn did Tobirama return to his quarters and open the scroll.
"Observe the students Renji Abarai, Rukia Kuchiki, and especially Gin Ichimaru in your class. Report on their behavior, disposition, and potential. Particular attention should be paid to any signs of exceptional talent or unusual traits."
Tobirama let out a slow breath. The hidden network's caution — bordering on paranoia — was evident. Renji, Rukia, and Gin were still young academy students, yet their progress was already being monitored closely. Gin's sharp mind and unsettling smile in particular seemed to draw extra interest.
Of course, they might have wanted to evaluate Gin for future recruitment into more covert operations. But Tobirama doubted it would be straightforward. While certain factions tolerated these shadow networks, the Gotei 13 and Central 46 would never allow one group to grow too powerful unchecked—especially when dealing with promising talents who might one day influence the balance of power.
After reading the orders, Tobirama channeled a small, controlled Kidō flame to burn the scroll into ash. This instruction was still within acceptable limits. In truth, even without the directive, he had already planned to keep a close eye on the three. Hiding their potential would only invite suspicion. In Soul Society, selective transparency was often the wiser path.
With the scroll disposed of, Tobirama created a reiatsu construct clone to continue practicing Kidō while his main body sat cross-legged to cultivate his spiritual energy.
At this stage, reiryoku capacity remained his greatest limitation. No matter how many advanced techniques he mastered, without sufficient spiritual power to wield them effectively in battle, they were little more than impressive displays. A Shinigami with low reiryoku would always face a hard ceiling. One with abundant reserves could compensate for average skill through sheer endurance and output.
Reiryoku decides the floor and the ceiling of one's strength.
The next morning, since he had no scheduled class, Tobirama headed to the Shin'ō Academy archives. He gathered old exam papers from the upper grades and pulled foundational materials from the earlier levels as well.
Helping Renji, Rukia, and the others improve their theoretical scores wasn't just motivation — it was a concrete goal he intended to fulfill.
As he reviewed past examinations, a clear pattern emerged. The questions changed little year to year, mostly reworded variations focused on reiryoku theory, Hollow classification in the Rukongai, Gotei 13 squad history, and the core principles of Zankensōki. Targeted practice on recent years' papers would give Renji and the others a realistic chance at passing.
He collected the relevant materials and made his way to the instructors' office.
"Yesterday, she listened to me the whole time. She was clearly interested!"
One instructor was enthusiastically recounting his blind date.
"Or," a female colleague replied dryly, "she just didn't want to be rude and stayed quiet."
"And when the bill came, she offered to split it! She already sees me as a potential partner!"
"Or maybe she was just afraid you'd say 'I'll treat you next time' and trap her into another meeting."
Tobirama walked in just in time to witness the woman calmly dismantling every optimistic interpretation. He glanced at another instructor who was quietly enjoying the show.
"He went on a blind date yesterday," the observer explained with a grin. "Now he's analyzing every moment and asking for advice. She thinks the girl wasn't interested and has told him to give up."
"Tobirama-sensei, perfect timing!" the hopeful instructor called out. "Do you have any special techniques for pursuing girls?"
"Special techniques…" Tobirama paused, then answered calmly, "I believe conveying genuine sincerity is usually enough."
Whether such foolproof methods existed didn't matter. Even if he had them, sharing romantic advice didn't fit the quiet, composed image he wanted to maintain—especially as someone from the fallen Shiba clan.
"Sincerity, huh…" The man scratched his head, troubled. "How exactly do I show that?"
"Give it up," the woman said flatly. "Have you looked at Tobirama-sensei lately? Even if he used tricks, they would probably work on most people. You? Not so much."
"How can that be?" the instructor protested. "I admit he's a bit more refined-looking than me, but the gap isn't that big, right?"
"You really won't accept reality until you hit the wall," she sighed, shaking her head.
"Keep trying," Tobirama offered with a gentle smile.
He genuinely hoped the man stayed occupied with his pursuit—it would allow Tobirama to continue substitute teaching Renji's, Rukia's, and Gin's classes without interference.
"See? Tobirama-sensei understands!" the man declared, confidence restored. "Just wait — I'll prove you wrong!"
That afternoon, Tobirama deliberately lowered the intensity of his lecture slightly. He wanted to test how the system evaluated different levels of teaching quality and student satisfaction.
[Lecture Completed. Settling…]
[Evaluation: B]
[Reward Obtained: Reiryoku +25]
[First B-rank Evaluation: Extra Reward — Proficient in Reiatsu Form Manipulation]
A surge of detailed training insights flooded Tobirama's mind, focused entirely on advanced shape and density control of spiritual energy. He was pleasantly surprised.
In the Shinigami arts, mastery of reiatsu form manipulation stood shoulder-to-shoulder with elemental applications. Combining both could greatly enhance technique power and efficiency. Unlike specialized Kidō paths, shape manipulation wasn't limited to specific attributes.
At its highest level, such control allowed the creation of pure, condensed spiritual constructs—techniques that needed no lengthy incantations yet delivered overwhelming force.
"I can begin developing something along these lines now," Tobirama thought, eyes gleaming with quiet ambition.
The +25 reiryoku gain was modest alone, but if B-rank evaluations consistently granted incremental increases, the benefits would stack nicely over time. Perhaps he didn't need to push for an A-rank in every single lesson.
He added the new development project to his already packed schedule:
Day: Teaching at the academy. Evening: Guiding promising students, including Gin, Rukia, and Renji. Night: Reiryoku cultivation and technique refinement. Weekends: Focused practical training sessions
His days were full — and strangely fulfilling.
Tobirama hoped to maintain this rhythm for as long as possible. Quiet growth behind the scenes while carefully navigating the politics surrounding the Shiba name would be ideal.
But he had not transmigrated into a peaceful era.
This was Soul Society—a world where tension between the Living World, Hueco Mundo, and internal power struggles never truly faded.
And on the fourth day after settling into this routine, troubling reports from frontier patrols began reaching the Seireitei.
