Chapter 1 - Richard Hackley

Most people preferred to start with a long dialogue or would just give some expository dump a lot of info to you, but I'll try my best to refrain from adding unnecessary dialogue. My name is Richard Hackley, I'm a normal businessman.

'Work… what could one say about it, I mean obviously, you were told since college that this was the goal of everything you've worked hard for, you get a job, you work hard you get promoted, you meet the love of your life and so on and so forth, was the thing I was told, but I was livid at first, I was optimistic wanted to get a feel of the business life, I respected it from a distance but didn't count myself as someone that was qualified for it yet, but after graduation I meant with my buddies we celebrated, our parents were happy, and not to long after that, all my dreams came true…I finally got the job, man i was hyped for it, everything was fantastic, it felt like life was going to right way…'

'Until three years later, my life had seen what had happened to me and decided to take another turn and take a trip to fulfillment leaving me behind, was I dead?. no obviously not, but I did feel soulless almost like I had been stabbed in the chest, you know not the heavy sharp metal blade that slices your body in half, I'm talking about the mental one, the office has a way to give you an invisible jab at your heart, it's not quick, not like a assassin that reaps your neck open, it's slow like poison I mean , you won't feel it until it's too late to get an antidote, now I work for this company seaside entries at first it wasn't that bad from the beginning and then for the past years I have realized that they can been annoying as shit'.

' I've seen paper works longer than human lifespans, I've seen breakdowns that make divorces look merciful, I've seen days that make the revelation seem closer than it appears, the C.E.O yeah not doubt about it, he's really trash, I don't even believe I make the bare minimum considered that I am a businessman I'm suppose to be engaging and getting business deals not sitting on my desk for the next twelve hours, I think mice enjoy more than I do,since all they do is hide and eat other peoples I mean they don't even worry that much just living life in the moment, I was already almost done closing when my boss asked me 'hey aren't you that Richard guy?'

'I saw a group of us where already ready to live but chose me out of all of them and when I turned to see if they would help but they just power walked out of the office living me as the sole victim to the owner,I simply told him I am to which gave him the bright idea to a speech as he went on to monologue about his rich life, how he's better than his father, that he's made my profits that what his ever could, and that he's hoping that his holiday he would spend it in Hawaii, he continued to talk but I couldn't care less, I really just wanted to go home, and relax. But midway through his self proclaimed speech he told me that I should acknowledge some documents and that he had something else to do, I told I was busy but he quickly brushed it off telling me that I'm still a junior worker and said that it should be an honour for someone like me that's down the ranks'.

'But from the way my colleagues reacted I would say otherwise'.

'I tried saying something but he just told me to do with no more questions asked and just left. I there I was, alone, no one to keep me company, the only person that was there was the night guard but he didn't bother coming in or out to say hello he just stayed at the entrance listening to some country music'.

It was all-nighter I could tell cause I was sorting and approving the documents he gave me, some seemed funny like a candy store or a beauty salon and some other stuff I was wondering why he was doing this we are a import-export company so is this here, but I wasn't to bothered since he gave the approval stamp to me and since he didn't articulate anything else to me, like him I just went with the flow, going through them and stamping the documents went crazy there was a lot but I kept going.

'It didn't take as long as I thought it would I would have assumed since it was seven when I wanted to close but then I looked at the time and realized that I had been at it for three hours, I couldn't tell either it was because I had unchecked freedom to carry out this task to do whatever I wanted or it was just the fact maybe my brain was training itself to endure more than what I bargained for'.

'I bid the night-guard goodnight but he was already fast asleep, his radio still playing the country music, I tiredly walked to my car and drove off knowing fully well it takes me almost an hour to get back home since I don't live in the main city but as I get back the only thing that awaits me in my homestead and that is my majestic bed, my throne my everything, showers are overrated for someone in my line of work at the moment maybe in the morning maybe but I used to come late sometimes so it could up for debate but I know a lot of my colleagues used to mock me about how I used to stink, but there were the new ones, fresh off the imagination that their living their dreams but they lasted lesser than me in the next few days at this point you couldn't even distinguish between them and me'.

'I was hoping that I would be able to cross the bridge leading to my town without any problems and behold I was being held by one of the worst things that have ever happened to man…traffic stop, it's not like a holdup where some people did some stupid stuff in the front and the back suffers, this is something more like it's intentional in the way that it makes it more annoying cause some officers decided it was good idea to safeguard a part of the town at the wrong time I mean people have some places to be and by people I mean me, my throne awaits me and I can't wait, but the driver to my left told me that it was alright that it would be over soon cause they said they were looking for someone but they didn't tell anyone who the person exactly but they were assuring that everything was going to be fine, I sighed and sank back into my car seat, trying to focus on the rain, the late night drizzling was already making me almost fall asleep, the thought was in my mind who was this guy that the police was looking for it didn't even matter to me, but maybe we should have had vigilantes around maybe they could done a better I never really knew of them they were not many in the country talk less of the ones in towns they were never almost impossible to find cause it's against the rules for vigilantism maybe if the police weren't letting prisoners go and causing problems for us at least it would ease the burden on them and maybe people could be saved on time, at least I've heard like fifteen people have died in our town due to late police response since they were getting funding so I was wondering where they got the funding to have a road block, but the more I thought about it the more it drifted me to sleep, but I think I must dozed off a bit to much and let's say I accidentally stepped on the accelerator and hit the car in front of me'.

I realized I was screwed.

Despite the rain beginning to pour, my senses became more active as I walked out of my car and reached out to the owner to apologize, but to my surprise he seemed relatively calm, assuring even he looked at me with calm eyes and told me "there's no need to fight over flimsy occurrences".

Relieved from that encounter I went back to my vehicle and started it up again, began to fantasize about my bed, really wanted to go home, my body felt like a bag of heavy cement forced to walk on it's own, but I prevailed and held up myself and ignited the engine ready to resume my miserable life but to my then something began to happen almost like a commotion.

I began to hear people screaming from behind as if that they were all running for cover as some stayed across the walking paths it felt so much and I didn't want to be apart of it, if it was trouble the police will handle it, if it was marriage conflict just sign the damn divorce paper already, no party wants to see that drama, but to my surprise as I tried to move forward, I felt an aggressive force from the back of my car, I tried to steer away from it but it was already too late, the vehicle was three times to size of my car, I didn't stand a chance and my car was plummeted to the side of the bridge, I can't remember was happened next cause it seemed like I had lost consciousness for a while and that the only thing that I could remember was that I began to smell smoke and it was already spreading inside the car, the engine already seemed to be leaking I knew that if I wasn't able to get out of here I was going to be dead and it already seemed that I was vehemently close to that part.

I tried punching through the door, it didn't budge I tried finding a means out but it seemed futile, the smoke had already covered the car I was trying but I didn't have enough strength to hit through the window strongly, was already coughing blood and before I knew I was already gasping for air struggling to regain myself as I collapsed deeper into my seat, my throat began to itch, but then just as I thought it was going to over I saw the man that I had an argument with on the road he seemed to fine and was moving fine midst the chaos, like faith he suddenly turned and looked at me directly in the eye , I thought he didn't see me but he began to wave, I reached out my hand hoping that he would see my struggle and would offer a helping hand.

But it seemed that it wasn't an extended hand, but was more of someone telling me good bye, waving back to me so happily, my conclusions that I had drawn to him vanished in a instant and he walked and mingled himself with the panicking civilians and disappeared within the crowd, I didn't even bother I could already feel my heart giving out, It was slower like sand paper rubbing against my throat, my body was already shutting down, my eyes where already seeming to be soaring red with watered blood, I felt that my last minutes on earth was just pain as I let it just happen I never expected the best from people.

Until that person came in the fold where the gap everyone had left had been filled by that one particular person, all I could hear at first was windshields being smashed it was hard to tell but the figure wore all black, and tried me out of the car, I began to here a voice that sounded buff but seemed coarsed almost like a guy that kept saying 'stay with me, don't die on me yet, you're still needed here Mr'.

'Those words, I couldn't understand why the person saved me, i seemed less, down upon if I could put it that way, I was never the focus of questions, I was seen as a quick answer to every problem was thrown at, nobody asked the answer if he was fine, or that he needed a break, he just wanted to get a little acknowledgement, he was a tool that magically found the solution, but before the solution came the idea but once you're in road so high, you wouldn't even bother to look at the people down the hill.'

'Later on that night the medics arrive and treated us properly, I later found out that the person that saved me might have been one of the vigilantes that have been sprouting across the state, we also found that the brigde was attacked by terrorist cells but I couldn't care less about, to be honest, I've never had any run-ins with them but one thing is for sure is that they look out for the people, they matter, we may not know who they are, but their actions speak louder than any word spoken, they used to say that if a man wanted to care, he neeeded to understand it from a point of pain and from what I see from them, it's only matter of time before we see more'

'thanks a lot for the information mr. Hackley' a journalist asked.

'it's been pleasure, now I have an excuse to tell my boss tomorrow'

The reporter giggled a bit before asking one last question 'did you ever find that man?'

'no but from last night the only thing I knew was that the police committed to a check point, the people at the front told me that they were looking for someone and that we should be wary cause it's become very serious as the police presence has increased across this side of the town, but I also wonder where that man went?'

'he must have been a citizen'

'oh I think I remember something… I couldn't see him'

'what?' the reporter asked, very confused by the statement.

'i didn't realize at first but he seemed to be on and off in some way, it's this accident that occurred I didn't even put this on mind until…take care miss'
