Chapter 74 - CHAPTER 74: COUNTER-PLANNING

"He's going to kill Stefan."

Caroline's voice was steady, but her hands gripped the edge of the Salvatore library table hard enough to whiten her knuckles. "He's going to use a crowd of innocent people as cover to murder vampires, and Stefan is going to be right there when it happens."

"That's the short version, yes." I stood at the head of the table, having just finished relaying everything I'd overheard. Stefan sat rigid in his chair, processing. Alaric paced by the windows, his hunter's mind already running tactical calculations.

"The device," Alaric said without turning around. "You said it affects a hundred-meter radius. That's... that's significant coverage."

"The whole town square, basically. Anyone attending the fireworks display."

"Pearl and Anna," Stefan said quietly. "If they're there—"

"They're dead too. John's teams won't discriminate between hostile and peaceful vampires." I pulled out my phone, showing them the rough map I'd sketched from memory. "He's planning deployment from the Gilbert building basement. Collection teams positioned around the perimeter. Once the device activates, they have five minutes to gather every incapacitated vampire before the effect wears off."

"And then stake them while they're helpless." Caroline's voice hardened. "That's not vampire hunting—that's an execution."

"There's more." I met their eyes one by one. "The device doesn't just affect vampires. Jonathan Gilbert's original design targeted what he called 'cursed creatures.' That includes werewolves."

"Werewolves?" Alaric stopped pacing. "There aren't any werewolves in Mystic Falls."

"There might be. The Lockwood family—" I hesitated, weighing how much meta-knowledge to reveal. "There are rumors about supernatural heritage in the founding families. If anyone with a dormant werewolf gene is exposed to that frequency, they'll be affected too."

"Tyler Lockwood," Stefan said, putting pieces together. "He has a temper. The family has a history of violence—"

"We can't know for certain, but yes. Tyler might be vulnerable." I spread my hands on the table. "John's device could expose secrets no one in this town is prepared to handle. It could trigger werewolf transformations. It could get people killed who have nothing to do with vampires."

Silence fell. The weight of the situation pressed down on all of us.

"What are our options?" Caroline asked finally.

Alaric resumed his pacing. "Three that I see. One: steal or destroy the device before Founders' Day. Pro: eliminates the threat entirely. Con: John will notice it's missing, probably accelerate his timeline or find another way."

"Two," Stefan continued. "All vampires leave town before Founders' Day. Pearl, Anna, Damon if we can find him, and me. The device activates, affects no one, John looks like a fool."

"And then what?" Caroline demanded. "You just never come back? Mystic Falls becomes a vampire-free zone forever, and anyone who moves here later gets caught by whatever John sets up next?"

"There's a third option." Alaric stopped by the window, his expression grim. "We eliminate John Gilbert."

"No." The word came out harder than I intended. "He's Elena's uncle. The only family she has left besides Jeremy and Jenna. We don't kill him."

"He's planning to kill your allies, Matt. He'll kill Pearl, Anna, Stefan—anyone he can catch."

"And if we murder him, Elena loses more family." I shook my head. "There has to be another way."

"What way?" Alaric's voice carried frustration. "We can't steal the device without alerting him. We can't evacuate all vampires without raising suspicion. We can't kill him without destroying Elena. What options does that leave?"

The room fell silent again. I stared at the map, trying to see angles I'd missed.

"We need more intelligence," I said finally. "We don't know where John keeps the device. We don't know his exact timeline for deployment. We don't know who's on his collection teams or how he's coordinating them." I looked up. "I can get closer to him."

"How?"

"I'm Matt Donovan. High school student, former football player, waiter at the Grill. John already questioned me about the supernatural situation—he knows I resist compulsion, suspects I'm connected somehow." I smiled without humor. "I'll give him what he wants. A naive human who hates vampires because one of them killed his sister."

"That's dangerous." Stefan's voice was quiet. "John is paranoid. If he realizes you're playing him—"

"Then I'll deal with that when it happens." I met his eyes. "We have five weeks until Founders' Day. We need to use them."

Caroline reached across the table and grabbed my hand. "You're not doing this alone."

"I'm not planning to. But John won't trust me if I show up with allies. I need to be the wounded teenager looking for answers, not the leader of an anti-hunter coalition." I squeezed her hand. "You keep doing what you're doing—social intelligence, tracking movements, monitoring new arrivals. Stefan, watch Pearl and Anna, make sure they know the threat. Alaric, research the device. See if there's a way to neutralize it or jam the frequency."

"And if there isn't?"

"Then we improvise." I stood, feeling the weight of responsibility settle onto my shoulders. "We're not letting John Gilbert turn Founders' Day into a massacre. Whatever it takes."

Zach appeared in the doorway with a tray of sandwiches—his perpetual answer to tense alliance meetings. The mundane gesture broke some of the tension, and I grabbed one without thinking, suddenly aware that I hadn't eaten since breakfast.

"Five weeks," Caroline repeated. "That's not much time."

"It's enough." I bit into the sandwich, tasting nothing. "It has to be."
