Nora's POV
"His hearing is exceptional," I whisper to Ophelia as we cross the yard.
"I'm aware vampires possess superior auditory abilities," she murmurs back. "Are you certain bringing him along was wise?"
"Without his intervention, you'd be helping me exhume a corpse right now."
She wrinkles her nose in disgust. "Fair point. You know my stance on decomposing flesh."
I chuckle and link my arm through hers. The twins walk several paces ahead while James maintains a respectful distance behind us. "Besides, having someone watch our backs will be invaluable. Our focus needs to be completely concentrated on this ritual."
"Do you trust him?" she asks.
"I do. Perhaps that's foolish, but yes."
Ophelia nods slowly. "Your judgment is enough for me." She squeezes my hand, her expression promising we'll discuss this later.
The stench of decay assaults us long before we reach the clearing.
