Early the next morning, just as the sky began to lighten, Grandpa Max woke up.
After washing up, he quietly started the Rustbucket and drove toward the nearest large city. The others were still fast asleep.
It wasn't until they were about to enter the city limits that Aiden stirred.
His first instinct was to touch the Omnitrix on his right wrist. The cool metal surface felt reassuringly real.
He sat up, rubbing his sleepy eyes before climbing down from his bunk. Since the RV had three bunks stacked vertically, and he slept on the top one, climbing down was unavoidable.
"Morning, Grandpa," Aiden greeted.
"Morning."
Aiden washed his face, brushed his teeth, changed into clean clothes, and then sat down at the table, immediately fiddling with the Omnitrix again.
Even though he'd only had it for a day, he still couldn't stop examining it.
"Aiden, there's breakfast in the fridge," Grandpa Max reminded him kindly. "Eat first."
"Got it, Grandpa."
Aiden pulled out a few slices of bread, toasted them, and began eating while absentmindedly turning the Omnitrix dial.
If I could unlock Way Big… or even Alien X…
He'd be unstoppable.
But in his mind, the Omnitrix wasn't his greatest advantage.
The system was.
If the system can enhance my alien forms, maybe it can enhance the Omnitrix too, he thought.
Maybe unlock new transformations early… or even trigger an Ultimate evolution ahead of time.
"Aiden, buckle up!" Grandpa Max's sudden warning snapped him out of his thoughts.
Aiden quickly set down his plate and fastened his seatbelt.
The Rustbucket began swerving left and right, narrowly avoiding traffic.
Through the window, Aiden saw a large truck roar past them. Several masked men stood in the back, gripping rifles and scanning the streets aggressively.
"Robbers?"
His eyes narrowed.
Ahead, smoke billowed into the sky.
An apartment building was on fire.
Residents screamed from the windows. Crowds had gathered below—some throwing buckets of water, others frantically calling emergency services. But the flames were spreading too fast.
Aiden pieced it together instantly.
A gang had stormed the building, robbed the tenants, then set it on fire to cover their escape.
If nothing changed, people inside would die.
But he was about to change that.
"Grandpa."
He didn't need to say much. Grandpa Max had already pulled the Rustbucket into a quiet side street.
Ben and Gwen were waking up now.
"What's going on?" Gwen asked, still groggy.
"There's a fire," Aiden said seriously as he reached for the door. "I'm going to help. Stay inside and be careful."
"Wait, Aiden." Grandpa Max turned to him, his expression firm but filled with concern.
"No matter which alien you use… be safe. And don't reveal your identity."
Warmth filled Aiden's chest.
No matter what form he took, he was still Grandpa's grandson.
"I understand."
He stepped out and hurried into a nearby alley.
After confirming no one was watching, he slammed his palm down on the Omnitrix core.
Flash!
Green light burst outward—
Then transformed into blazing orange flames.
Heatblast stood in the alley, fire roaring from his head and shoulders. The dark alley instantly lit up with fiery brilliance.
Boom!
Jets of flame erupted from his feet, propelling him into the sky like a living comet. A trail of fire streaked behind him as he shot toward the burning building.
The crowd below quickly noticed.
A red-and-gold streak blazed across the sky and descended toward the flames.
"What is that?!"
"An alien?!"
Heatblast landed in front of the inferno.
"First, contain the spread."
He rotated his arms, releasing controlled streams of fire that formed a blazing perimeter around the building.
His flames burned hotter and cleaner than the uncontrolled blaze, creating a barrier that prevented the fire from spreading outward.
The original flames were forced inward, temporarily contained.
"Help! Help us!"
Cries echoed from the upper floors.
Heatblast looked up at the smoke-filled windows.
"Hang on! I'm coming!"
With another explosive burst from his feet, he launched upward toward the trapped residents.
