Steve Rogers could easily guess what the vampire elder, Nomak, was trying to do.
It was nothing more than attempting to improve vampire genetics—removing weaknesses and achieving true evolution.
Vampires could live for thousands of years, which meant their genes were remarkably stable and resistant to mutation.
If they wanted to evolve, they would have to rely on technology. Perhaps those mutated vampires they had encountered were Nomak's handiwork.
The Daily Bugle – Office
Steve wore sunglasses and a baseball cap, disguising himself as the bodyguard of the female mercenary, Heidi.
The Daily Bugle was the perfect cover for Heidi. She was practically a ghost in the system—no records, no background, and no ties.
Owning a media outlet would be a major advantage for Steve's future plans. When the time came for a war of public opinion, at least he wouldn't have to worry about not having a platform to speak the truth.
Unless someone could destroy the entire planet with one punch, public opinion still mattered.
Steve had been slandered and defamed before, unable to defend himself. Now, this was his countermeasure.
J. Jonah Jameson looked gloomy. He had been forced to sell his beloved newspaper to pay off his son's gambling debts.
Ironically, Nissa had come up with that very plan—luring Jameson's son to a casino, encouraging a few all-in bets, and throwing in wine and women for good measure. The result was inevitable.
They say the more beautiful a woman is, the more dangerous she becomes. Who would have thought Nissa could be so cunning?
Heidi strode into the office and looked directly at Jameson. "Are you Jameson?"
"That's me." Jameson felt a bit uncomfortable under her gaze. Even behind sunglasses, her presence was intimidating.
"Gather everyone in the main hall for a meeting."
With that, she turned around and walked out. Her manner was sharp and efficient.
Moments later, all employees had assembled, putting down their work as Jameson called them in.
Heidi stood tall in a long trench coat and combat boots. At 1.85 meters, with short blonde hair and dark sunglasses, she exuded confidence and power.
She scanned the crowd. "I'm your new boss, Heidi. I'm very busy, so I won't be managing things directly. What's your name?"
She pointed toward a woman she already knew from the files but pretended not to recognize.
"Me?" Roxanne looked uncertain. "My name is Roxanne Simpson."
"Good. From now on, you're the president of the newspaper. Jameson will assist you. And you—what's your name?" Heidi pointed at another woman.
"Boss, my name is Betty Brant. I'm Mr. Jameson's secretary and also handle editorial work."
(Yes, that Betty Brant—the same one from the Spider-Man films.)
Betty, with her short dark curls, elegant makeup, and fitted suit, had a sharp, capable aura that perfectly matched her role.
"From now on," Heidi said briskly, "you'll head the administrative department. Handle personnel and logistics."
She wasn't familiar with media operations, but that didn't matter—she was simply the front. Steve would handle the rest.
"Yes, boss."
Betty smiled. A promotion was always welcome—it gave her a chance to grow. Still, her curiosity was piqued by the mysterious man behind Heidi.
Wearing sunglasses, a mask, and a cap, Steve was unrecognizable—but his presence radiated quiet authority. Something about him felt good.
"Roxanne, Jameson, Betty," Heidi said, her tone firm. "The newspaper is yours from now on.
I don't care about profit—I care about truth. Jameson, you'll have full freedom under that condition.
Roxanne, you'll oversee content integrity. I don't want to see any article smearing Captain America unless the facts are proven.
Betty, assist Roxanne and coordinate administration. Your salaries will be standard—but I'll give you all a 20% raise.
We're implementing a last-in, first-out system. Details will be sent to your emails.
Everyone who passes the trial period will get an additional 10% raise. That's all. Continue your work—I'm leaving."
With that, Heidi turned on her heel and left with Steve. She clearly wasn't used to this kind of corporate environment—after all, she'd been frozen for twenty years.
The moment they left, the entire newsroom erupted.
Some were thrilled that the infamously harsh Jameson was no longer in charge. Others congratulated Roxanne and Betty on their sudden promotions.
Roxanne was still in disbelief—she never dreamed she'd become president of the Daily Bugle.
Betty, however, was composed. She'd been a secretary long enough to handle big changes. She extended a hand toward Roxanne.
"President, I look forward to working with you."
"Please take care of me, Betty," Roxanne said with a smile. "I'll need your help. Let's get started on today's headlines about Captain America—the boss clearly supports him."
Roxanne was practical and straightforward. She also happened to be a huge Captain America fan after their past encounters.
"Alright, let's move. Jameson, come up with the title."
Betty turned to him, asserting her new authority.
Jameson, now demoted from editor-in-chief to staff editor, felt the sting. Still, he needed the job—his family depended on it.
"How about this?" he suggested. "Captain America: The Embodiment of Justice in a Materialistic New Era."
"No," Roxanne said firmly. "That sounds like flattery. Keep it objective, or the boss won't be happy."
"Let's use content from the last exclusive interview. Betty, you handle layout and editing. Jameson, focus on typesetting and advertising deals."
The division of labor was clear and perfectly aligned with their strengths. Even Jameson couldn't deny it was efficient.
They were satisfied—and so was Steve.

Steve frowned slightly. So this skill even predicts danger?
He chuckled softly.
Heidi looked at him curiously. That smile—half-charming, half-mischievous—made her heart flutter.
And when Steve casually said he'd teach her how to make cream puffs later… she almost melted on the spot.
