Chapter 27 - When the Sky Starts Watching

The ravine should have felt safe after the battle.

It didn't.

If anything, the silence afterward felt worse.

Wind slid through the broken stone bridge with a hollow whistle, carrying the scent of dust, iron, and something faintly metallic that Kael couldn't quite place. The bodies of the fallen hunters lay scattered across the cracked stone path, their black armor dull now that the glowing runes had faded.

No one spoke for a while.

Cinder paced.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

The young dragon's claws scraped lightly against the stone as ember lines flickered along its scales.

It wasn't angry.

It was restless.

Kael felt that restlessness through their bond like a distant thunder rumbling beneath the earth.

Iris finally broke the silence.

"Well," she said brightly, kicking one of the fallen hunters in the shoulder, "on the bright side, they had really nice armor."

Nyx glared at her.

"You're looting a System enforcement unit."

Iris shrugged.

"They tried to kill us."

"That's not how legality works."

"Legality stopped mattering the moment they said containment," Iris replied casually.

She crouched beside one of the hunters and began fiddling with the strange device mounted to their gauntlet.

Kael watched quietly.

His attention wasn't really on the bodies.

Or the ravine.

Or even his companions.

It was on the sky.

The feeling hadn't left.

Something was watching.

Not closely.

But curiously.

Like someone glancing down from a tower window to see what made a noise in the street.

Kael rubbed the back of his neck.

"I don't like this."

Luna looked up from where she had been inspecting the bridge.

"You never like anything."

"This is different."

Nyx stepped closer.

"You feel it too?"

Kael nodded slowly.

"It's faint… but it's there."

Cinder suddenly stopped pacing.

Its head lifted sharply.

The young dragon sniffed the air.

Then it looked up.

Straight into the sky.

A low rumble escaped its throat.

Not a roar.

More like the uneasy growl of an animal sensing a storm long before the clouds appear.

Luna followed its gaze.

"…There's nothing there."

Kael muttered under his breath.

"Yeah."

"That's the problem."

The familiar chime echoed faintly inside Kael's mind.

[Environmental anomaly detected.]

Kael sighed.

"Now you notice."

Nyx tilted her head.

"What did it say?"

Kael rubbed his temple.

"Apparently the sky being creepy counts as an anomaly."

Iris snorted.

"That's comforting."

The System chimed again.

[Delayed Threat status increased.]

[External observation probability: 38%.]

Kael's stomach dropped.

"…That's not good."

Nyx crossed her arms.

"What?"

Kael exhaled slowly.

"It thinks something's watching us."

Luna stiffened.

"What kind of something?"

The System answered before Kael could.

[Threat classification unknown.]

[Possible draconic presence.]

Everyone went quiet.

Iris slowly stood up.

"…You're joking."

Kael shook his head.

"Nope."

Nyx's expression hardened.

"Dragons don't just casually watch random ravines."

Kael gestured vaguely toward Cinder.

"They might if one of their kids is down here."

Cinder looked proud.

Nyx pinched the bridge of her nose.

"This is getting worse by the minute."

While the others argued quietly, Iris finished dismantling the gauntlet device she had been studying.

"Hey Kael," she said suddenly.

"Yeah?"

"You're going to want to see this."

She held up a small metal sphere she had removed from inside the hunter's equipment.

It pulsed faintly with blue light.

Nyx's eyes narrowed instantly.

"…Tracker."

Iris nodded.

"Not just a tracker."

She tossed it lightly toward Kael.

"It's broadcasting."

Kael caught it.

The moment his fingers touched the sphere, the System chimed again.

[Foreign System interface detected.]

[Warning: Data interception possible.]

Kael stared at the device.

"They weren't just hunting us."

Nyx's voice was quiet.

"They were recording."

Luna frowned.

"Recording what?"

Kael squeezed the sphere.

"Everything."

The fight.

Cinder's draconic pressure.

His ability to slip the containment field.

All of it.

Kael felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

"They weren't here to stop me," he said slowly.

"They were here to confirm something."

Nyx nodded grimly.

"And now they have."

Iris whistled.

"Well that's awkward."

The ground trembled slightly.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

Cinder immediately dropped into a defensive stance.

Its scales flared brighter.

The System chimed sharply.

[Warning.]

[High-mass aerial entity detected.]

Everyone looked up.

At first there was nothing.

Then—

A shadow passed across the sun.

Huge.

Slow.

Silent.

Luna's voice dropped to a whisper.

"…That's not a cloud."

Kael felt his heartbeat slam against his ribs.

Far above them, barely visible against the blue sky, something massive moved through the air.

Wings.

Too large.

Too wide.

Too ancient.

The shape circled once.

Then again.

Watching.

Studying.

Nyx whispered a single word.

"…Dragon."

Iris looked like she might faint.

"Oh cool," she said weakly.

"We're dead."

Cinder stepped forward.

Before anyone could stop it, the young dragon spread its wings.

Not fully.

But enough.

Its ember lines flared brilliantly.

A low roar rolled out from its chest.

Defiant.

Challenging.

Luna grabbed Kael's arm.

"Tell it to stop!"

Kael didn't move.

He was staring upward.

Something strange was happening.

The massive shape in the sky slowed.

The dragon circled lower.

Not attacking.

Just watching.

The System chimed.

[Draconic signature confirmed.]

[Species classification incomplete.]

[Estimated threat level: catastrophic.]

Kael swallowed.

"…Good to know."

Nyx stepped closer.

"Kael."

"Yeah?"

"If that thing decides we're a problem…"

"We won't be for long," Kael finished.

For a long moment nothing happened.

The great dragon continued circling high above the ravine.

Cinder stood its ground.

Neither attacked.

Neither retreated.

Kael suddenly felt something strange brush against his mind.

Not the System.

Something older.

Colder.

Curious.

A presence like ancient fire and deep sky.

The System chimed urgently.

[Warning.]

[Foreign cognitive pressure detected.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

The pressure grew stronger.

Not hostile.

Just probing.

Like someone tapping on glass to see if it breaks.

Kael took a slow breath.

Then he did the only thing Ashen had taught him.

He suppressed.

Not just his power.

Everything.

His presence folded inward like a collapsing star.

The pressure paused.

Confused.

The dragon in the sky tilted one enormous wing.

For the briefest moment, Kael felt amusement brush against his thoughts.

Then—

The dragon turned.

And flew away.

The shadow vanished across the sky.

The pressure disappeared.

The ravine returned to normal.

Everyone stood frozen.

Iris finally spoke.

"…Did we just pass a dragon inspection?"

Nyx exhaled slowly.

"I think we did."

Kael rubbed his temples.

"…I think it liked Cinder."

Cinder looked extremely pleased with itself.

The tension slowly drained from the group.

Luna collapsed onto a nearby rock.

"I need several minutes to process that."

Iris nodded.

"I need several drinks."

Nyx looked at Kael.

"That dragon could have erased us."

Kael nodded.

"Yeah."

"Why didn't it?"

Kael glanced at Cinder.

"Maybe it was curious."

Nyx considered that.

"Or maybe it was deciding whether you're worth killing later."

"…Also possible."

The System chimed again.

[Draconic observation logged.]

[Anomaly status unchanged.]

Kael sighed.

"You're really not helping."

Kael stared at the sky where the dragon had disappeared.

His thoughts churned.

The hunters had found him.

The System was watching him.

And now a dragon had noticed him too.

Three forces.

All aware.

All curious.

None friendly.

Nyx seemed to reach the same conclusion.

"We need to move," she said.

"Fast."

Iris groaned.

"We just survived."

Nyx gestured to the tracker sphere.

"And more will come."

Kael crushed the sphere in his hand.

The metal cracked.

The blue light died.

But he knew it didn't matter.

The hunters had already sent their data.

He exhaled slowly.

"Well," he muttered.

"Looks like things just escalated."

As they prepared to leave the ravine, the System chimed again.

But this time the tone was different.

Less mechanical.

Almost… thoughtful.

[System analysis updated.]

[User Kael Vire classified as persistent anomaly.]

[Adaptive observation protocol initiated.]

Kael frowned.

"…Adaptive?"

The System continued.

[Monitoring parameters expanding.]

[Behavioral unpredictability noted.]

Nyx glanced at him.

"What now?"

Kael sighed.

"The System just decided I'm interesting."

Iris grinned.

"Congratulations."

Kael didn't smile.

Because he knew what that meant.

When something powerful found you interesting…

It rarely ended well.

They left the ravine before sunset.

The broken bridge faded behind them.

The mountains stretched ahead.

Somewhere beyond them lay the next city.

More beasts.

More hunters.

More problems.

Cinder trotted beside Kael happily, completely unaware that it had just challenged an ancient dragon and lived.

Kael scratched the dragon's head.

"You're going to get me killed one day."

Cinder chirped proudly.

Iris laughed.

"Oh relax."

Nyx shook her head.

"This is only the beginning."

Luna looked back at the sky one last time.

"…I hope that dragon doesn't come back."

Kael didn't answer.

Because deep down…

He had a feeling it would.
