Chapter 28 - The City That Shouldn't Exist

By the time the sun dipped behind the mountains, the ravine had disappeared behind them.

Kael didn't look back.

He had learned something important over the past few days—looking back too often made you hesitate. Hesitation got people killed.

Still… the sky felt heavier than before.

Even though the dragon had flown away hours ago, Kael couldn't shake the sensation that something had changed.

Not in the world.

In the balance.

Cinder padded beside him happily, occasionally snapping at drifting leaves like an oversized puppy. The young dragon clearly had no lingering anxiety about the fact that it had just stared down a creature capable of leveling kingdoms.

Nyx walked ahead of the group, her movements silent and precise as always.

Iris and Luna followed behind Kael, quietly arguing about food.

"I'm telling you," Iris insisted, "if we find a city, the first thing I'm doing is ordering a full roasted boar."

Luna frowned.

"You say that every time."

"And every time we don't find a city."

Nyx suddenly stopped.

Everyone froze.

Kael looked up.

The forest ahead had ended.

Beyond it, the land dropped into a massive valley carved between the mountains.

And in the center of that valley—

A city.

A massive one.

Stone towers climbed into the sky, their surfaces glinting faintly in the fading sunlight. Thick walls surrounded the city like the shell of a giant beast, reinforced with metal gates and watchtowers.

But something about it felt… wrong.

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"…That wasn't on the map."

Nyx shook her head slowly.

"No."

Luna stepped closer to the edge of the ridge.

"…It's huge."

Iris whistled.

"Okay, forget roasted boar."

She pointed toward the distant city.

"That place probably has actual restaurants."

Kael didn't move.

His instincts were prickling again.

Not danger.

Something stranger.

The System chimed softly.

[Unknown urban settlement detected.]

Kael blinked.

"…Unknown?"

Nyx looked at him.

"What does it say?"

Kael gestured toward the valley.

"The System doesn't recognize it."

Silence fell over the group.

Luna spoke first.

"That's impossible."

Nyx nodded.

"The System maps everything."

Iris frowned.

"…Unless this place doesn't want to be mapped."

The road leading down the mountain looked old.

Very old.

Cracked stone lined the path, partially covered in moss and creeping vines. Broken statues stood along the roadside at irregular intervals, their faces worn smooth by time.

Or deliberately erased.

Kael crouched beside one of them as they descended.

The statue's body still remained—armored, holding a sword pointed downward in a gesture of peace.

But the face had been chiseled away completely.

Nyx noticed.

"That's deliberate."

Luna traced the broken edge with her fingers.

"Why erase faces?"

Iris shrugged.

"Maybe the sculptor was bad at portraits."

Nyx ignored her.

Kael looked toward the city again.

Something about the road felt… ceremonial.

As if it had once been meant for processions.

Armies.

Kings.

Or worse.

The System chimed again.

[Warning.]

Kael stiffened.

"What now?"

[Historical data incomplete.]

[Settlement not found in current System archives.]

Kael frowned.

"…So it existed before the System."

Nyx stopped walking.

"That's not possible."

The System had existed for thousands of years.

Longer than most recorded civilizations.

Kael glanced back at the massive walls surrounding the valley city.

"…Apparently it is."

By the time they reached the base of the valley, night had begun creeping across the sky.

Torches burned along the city walls.

Guards stood watch above the massive gate.

The city was alive.

People moved along the road—merchants, travelers, farmers pulling carts loaded with supplies.

Nothing about it looked abandoned.

Which made the System's confusion even stranger.

Iris leaned closer to Kael.

"Okay, serious question."

"Yeah?"

"Are we walking into some ancient cursed city?"

Kael thought about it.

"…Probably."

Iris sighed.

"Of course we are."

Nyx approached the gate guards first.

Two heavily armored soldiers stood on either side of the entrance, halberds crossed in front of them.

One stepped forward as they approached.

"State your business."

Nyx's voice remained calm.

"Travelers. Passing through the mountains."

The guard's eyes flicked across the group.

They lingered briefly on Cinder.

"…You're carrying a dragon."

Cinder puffed its chest proudly.

Kael raised a hand.

"It's small."

The guard stared at him.

"…That's still a dragon."

Kael shrugged helplessly.

The guard sighed.

"Fine."

He stepped aside.

"Welcome to Vareth Hollow."

The name echoed strangely in Kael's mind.

The System chimed.

[Location name detected: Vareth Hollow.]

[Historical record… missing.]

Kael stepped through the gate slowly.

The moment his foot crossed the threshold—

The System went silent.

Kael stopped walking.

Nyx noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Kael looked around the bustling street.

Merchants shouted from wooden stalls.

Lanterns lit the narrow roads.

People laughed and talked as if nothing in the world was strange.

But Kael's mind felt… empty.

"The System's gone again," he whispered.

Luna stiffened.

"Like the Null Meridian?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

The Null Meridian had felt like a dead zone.

This place felt… hidden.

As if the System had simply been locked outside.

Nyx's eyes narrowed.

"…That's worse."

Iris frowned.

"Why?"

Nyx gestured to the city around them.

"Because something powerful enough to block the System built this place."

Luna whispered.

"And it's still working."

Despite the unsettling discovery, the group continued deeper into the city.

The streets were crowded but orderly.

Stone houses lined the roads, their architecture unlike anything Kael had seen before. Tall arched windows, sweeping staircases, and intricate metalwork decorated almost every building.

It looked ancient.

But well maintained.

Kael noticed something else too.

Everyone seemed… calm.

Too calm.

No one reacted to Cinder.

No one stared at their weapons.

No one questioned the presence of armed strangers.

It was as if travelers passed through here every day.

Nyx leaned closer to Kael.

"They're watching us."

Kael nodded.

He had noticed.

People weren't staring openly—but their eyes followed the group as they walked.

Evaluating.

Measuring.

Like merchants deciding whether something was worth buying.

Iris whispered.

"I feel like we just walked into a secret society."

Kael muttered.

"You might not be wrong."

Eventually they found an inn.

At least, it looked like one.

The building sat at the center of a large square, its wooden sign hanging from iron chains.

Except…

The sign was blank.

No name.

No symbol.

Just polished wood.

Iris pointed.

"That's creepy."

Nyx pushed open the door.

Inside, the inn looked normal enough.

Tables filled the common room.

Travelers ate and drank while a fire crackled in the hearth.

Behind the counter stood an elderly woman polishing glasses.

She looked up as the group entered.

Her eyes lingered on Kael for a moment.

Then she smiled.

"Welcome, travelers."

Her voice was warm.

But something about it made Kael uneasy.

Nyx approached the counter.

"Rooms for the night."

The woman nodded.

"Of course."

She handed over four iron keys.

"No payment needed."

Iris blinked.

"…Wait."

"First stay in Vareth Hollow is always free," the woman said.

Luna frowned.

"That's suspicious."

The woman smiled wider.

"Think of it as hospitality."

Kael studied her carefully.

"…What's the catch?"

The woman's eyes gleamed.

"You'll see."

Later that night, Kael couldn't sleep.

Something about the city bothered him.

The silence.

The missing System.

The way the people watched them.

Cinder lifted its head from the floor beside his bed.

It felt it too.

Kael quietly left the room.

The inn hallway was empty.

He stepped outside.

The city square was bathed in moonlight.

But something had changed.

The streets were empty.

No guards.

No travelers.

Just silence.

Kael frowned.

"…Where did everyone go?"

A voice answered behind him.

"They're asleep."

Kael turned instantly.

A figure stood at the edge of the square.

Tall.

Cloaked.

Watching him.

Kael's hand moved toward his sword.

"Who are you?"

The figure stepped forward.

Moonlight revealed a man with silver hair and calm, ancient eyes.

"My name," he said softly,

"Is Alder Vareth."

Kael's stomach dropped.

"…Like the city?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Exactly like the city."

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"You built this place?"

Alder chuckled.

"Not exactly."

He gestured toward the quiet streets.

"I hid it."

Kael felt his pulse quicken.

"From the System?"

Alder nodded.

"From the System."

Alder walked slowly across the square.

Kael followed cautiously.

"This city," Alder said, "is older than the System."

Kael folded his arms.

"I guessed."

Alder smiled.

"But that isn't the interesting part."

He stopped.

Turned to face Kael.

"The interesting part…"

His eyes gleamed.

"…is that you are the first Unbound to walk these streets in two thousand years."

Kael's breath caught.

"You know what I am?"

Alder laughed softly.

"Of course."

He gestured toward the sky.

"Dragons noticed you."

Kael stiffened.

"Hunters found you."

Alder's smile widened.

"And the System started adapting to you."

Kael stared at him.

"…How do you know all that?"

Alder's voice lowered.

"Because this city exists for one reason."

Kael felt a chill run down his spine.

"What reason?"

Alder stepped closer.

"To protect the people the System cannot control."

Kael's heart pounded.

"You mean—"

Alder nodded.

"Unbound."
